Title: Tropical Bowl / Daytona Beach / Ruiz Offensive MVP
Post by: Penguin Nation on January 24, 2017, 09:01:14 AM
I missed this game and just read about it on AGS.  Webb and Ruiz were two of the top four rushers in this game.  Webb returned the opening kick and rushed on the first play.  Ruiz (apparently his suspension doesn't apply to this game) had the first rush for the American team, and was named the offensive MVP.  He had the longest rushing play and most rushing yards/play.

Great representation of Penguin FB in this All Star game in front of NFL and CFL scouts...who must be sitting on the camera side  :D

I don't know how others feel about this, but I will never forgive Ruiz and the rest of that irresponsible group for betraying their teammates and crippling our team during the playoffs.  Happy for Webb, could care less about Ruiz.

Agreed.  I didn't watch these highlights after Jody's opening kickoff return, as I don't care.  Ruiz would have been a HUGE help in the playoffs and finished as the #1 Rusher in YSU history and been an icon forever, IF he didn't put a priority on getting high over his teammates.
I also feel bad for Avery Moss and his ankle.  You don’t get much opportunity to showcase your stuff for the scouts and he is obviously still hurting.

I don't fully understand the reasons for the suspensions. Ruiz was pulled over for a bullsh-- infraction of failing to use a turn signal, and then the LEO searched his car after prolly manufacturing a claim of smelling marijuana, and finds a gun and marijuana.  Finding marijuana is like finding a cell phone...its literally everywhere.  If the Second Amendment mattered, finding a gun would be meaningless.  So all of that is BS.  It's the result of BS laws being enforced by people in magic blue costumes, not IMO, any fault of Ruiz.  Was Ruiz also involved in failed drug tests? idk.

What did the suspended players test positive for?  PEDs?  Marijuana?  Both are as common as candy, so I don't fault them too much. At least with PEDs they were trying to improve their performance on behalf of the team. PEDs should be banned tho in collegiate athletics.  They can have long term adverse effects.  Marijuana shouldn't even be an issue.  However, in exchange for a scholarship, there are rules attached, and those rules need to be followed, even if the rules (like testing for MJ) are BS.

It's unfortunate, and those that failed their drug tests screwed up....but I'd fault quitting on your team after losing your starting job long before I'd fault anything these four players did.

No hate.   Just respect for those who give Penguin FB their heart and soul, even if they partake in a little MJ....and also adding a little perspective if we are throwing stones around.

Prohibition of a plant is a f'in immoral and racist travesty that destroys lives way more than the plant ever could.  Martin may have trouble finding a job because of this FUBAR law.  I wrote a post about the asinine drug war:

http://ysupenguins.com/forum/index.php/topic,13427.0.html

Nothing that happened that night in Tallmadge makes me think less of Martin.  I actually feel sorry for him.

It's interesting that it's ok to launch stones at a productive player who played with passion, but not one who quit.  Just seems inconsistent is all.

Laws & rules that you honor are yours to pick and choose? And of course guns don't matter either?
Quit?  Request a tranfer for a better team fit isn't a quit in my book, only doing what is best for your career and education.  If he would have quit, we would have finished maybe 6-5 and missed the playoffs for an 11th consecutive year instead of a remarkable playoff run to the national finals.
You must be a Democrat, with the ability to pick and choose what laws & rules you follow and which you ignore?  I guess going forward; should we refer to you as Barack Hussain Nation?

lol.  hilarious.  I actually believe in self-governance/anarchy.

You've misrepresented what transpired this season but no biggie.  Calling me a Dem was the bigger miss.  :D

Really the guy was hanging with a known felon that just got released from prison out in a strange town doing whatever while we are on a playoff run.  Don't feel sorry for stupid.  If any team wastes their time on him. They are just as stupid.

I have never felt the need to condemn or support these young men who made a mistake in judgement  I was young and stupid at one time, and made even worse mistakes   One day they will regret it and ask for there teammates forgiveness if they have not already  Can't we forgive them ourselves and move on?  Sometimes it's difficult but the Christian thing to do.  I apologize beforehand to those who will lambaste me for trying to inject some religion here.

Sorry this isn't about forgiveness. It's about responsibility and from a team standpoint Ruiz let the team down.  The issue here isn't about race and if he was profiled.  It's about right and wrong .  I don't want to here the bs it's just weed or whatever it's against team rules and illegal right now in the state of Ohio.  We have to have accountability here and he failed as a person and as a Senior  and let his team down .  It's just plain selfish and stupid.  He hurt himself and the team.

YSUGO, have you ever broken any laws?  I suspect you have.  You're probably a felon.

http://www.businessinsider.com/henry-blodget-you-commit-three-felonies-a-day-2009-9

Don't worry, so am I and every else who is on this forum.

Martin was pulled over for not using a turn signal.  A turn signal. As far as marijuana goes, it's illegal because of a racist government. Alcohol is a far more dangerous drug, so it has zero to do with public health.

IDK if he tested + for PEDs.  But if Martin's offenses are limited to a plant and not using a turn signal, than good grief.  Bo's poor clock management is a far worse offense.

I do not believe that Ruiz tested positive for weed with the others. It was the gun possession. The university set the precedent of 1 semester suspension this past summer. Or, more likely he was not cleared in time. Thus Martin could play in this all-star game, but not the final. I could be wrong here, but everything points this way. It is equally possible that the NCAA is not involved in this game.

I too feel let down & that Ruiz let us down with his actions ...not much else you can say; but at the same time ...he is probably the best back to ever wear a Penguin uniform and I am very honored to have watched him for 4+ years.

Again ... Stay off race & politics. Don't forget we have a BS board down below this one.

Of all the things you said Penguin Nation...to feel sorry for him just really pisses me off.  That very mindset is the reason the country is in the position it's in & so many kids grow up thinking there's no right or wrong and everything is about themselves and their feelings.  Do you feel sorry for Aaron Hernandez too?  I mean at some point you have to be responsible even if it's who you're hanging around with.

Are you serious?  You're comparing Ruiz to Hernandez?  Why not Ted Kaczynski?

IMO, guns and MJ and not using a turn signal isn't the problem.  It's government's creation of vote plantations, and creating a culture of dependency.  It was done intentionally by sociopathic politicians and has wrecked the black family and black communities.

No I'm not but it goes back to being responsible and who you hang out with.  One thing leads to another.  He made bad decisions whether you think so not & hurt the team.

Nation: What does any of your "Godfather" dribble have to do with the topic? The guy played well in this game; that is what the topic was all about. He screwed up and a lot of people feel let down; this is not a thread about the treatment of people in America. Take that stuff to a non-sports site.

Ruiz has been here 4 plus years and still doesn't get it. Coaches talk to the players all the time about the dangers of Guns, drugs, violence, and just doing the right thing on a daily basis. Watching Lee Wright ride the bench for a full regular season because of improper gun use did nothing to change his mind. The team was tested just before or after the Jacksonville St. game and it did nothing to change his mind on getting a little high in the car on his trip to Tallmadge. The arresting officer did follow proper procedure. One of the leading causes for not using a turn signal or head lights is impaired driving (some people just plain forget). The smell of pot will create an automatic car search. I do like the fact he told the arresting officer the truth on both fronts..He needs help and I hope he can find it somewhere..It would be interesting to see how well received he was by his teammates..before and after his arrest!!

About time for 1AA or one of the other administrators to move this to the non-football area!
This is pretty disgusting trash talking if you ask me, and I usually put up with a lot!
If it says "black people" anything, or "white people" anything, it is racist, and IMO, there is no place for racism in football or on this blog.

A real nail biter.  Had me on the edge of my seat the whole game!
Actually ran it like a scrimage.  Players drifting on and off the field etc.
