Wow, looking forward to see some of the improvements and additions. We plan to be there in late August to visit for a few weeks.
What happened to the plans to add special sports broadcast class rooms on the East side of Stambaugh Stadium?
Campus is really improved since I went there 1998-2002. It's great to see them build a nice campus. I guess Barnes & Noble is moving in on every campus as the campus bookstore. Same happened at Ohio State.1998?? Should have seen it is 1967. West hall was an honest to goodness old army barrack and the basement at Clingan-Waddell was legendary!

go quins:I had several math/engineering classes in the basement of Clingan-Waddell Hall. What an experience!
Wow I totally forgot about Clingan-Waddell Hall! I had my math classes there back in 62,63; it was eerie. The 3rd floor of the Main Building was extremely cramped with very low ceilings. All in all, it was a great place.
I had a 4 hour calculus class Saturday morning in the basement of C-W hall. (3-1/2 hours trapped in that damn basement!) You should be glad your windows didn't open. Ours did, and the street dust came through the steet level grates down a 6' deep window well and driffed into the classroom! Oh, the good ol' days!go quins:I had several math/engineering classes in the basement of Clingan-Waddell Hall. What an experience!

However, the temperature was comfortable.
Now, they regularly turned the AC off on the hot days (>85 degree) between 3-7pm. I had classes from 4:30 - 11 pm. The room temperature offen exceed 90 degrees at the beginning of the class. We had to continuously search for cooler rooms in the building. We moved from room to room 3-4 times through out the evening as AC gradually came back on after 8 pm.
The building is also energy efficient..... Which means the windows cannot be open.
Some of my classes were in another "classy" building which you guys might have forgotten - the Rayen school, next door to the YWCA. You guys knew the "mud lot" and all the parking issues then too! Started ate $150 per quarter, full time.
Attended 72 to 76. Remember making it to the top floors of Jones Hall and finding quite a few fake walls and passages between rooms by moving pieces of trim just like the movies. Not a joke really happened! Someone suggested at one time they were butler passages for a wealthy family that lived there prior to the University taking it over?
GOOO GUINS!!!!

The following year, we were spoiled (by moving into the brand new engineering building). I will stop now before getting kick out of the site for all these non YSU sports discussions.

My very first class at YSU was at Rayen, 1971, Helen Van Gorder I believe.
I know it has been a while for me but I am impressed with the changes.
1AA started this thread talking about campus improvements so I think we are "clean" with non-sports, until he moves the thread

Speaking of bars, they are building one on campus I believe. Also a tattoo shop is opening on Lincoln. Kinda ironic as JT is our school president lol.....Yes, the building housed the old bar "Tony's hide away" on Elm Road was demolished couple of years ago. The old Burger King on Elm is now Hot Heads. The two eateries on Lincoln were splitted into 3 spaces. 1 of the 3 became Jimmy Johns. The 2nd one became the tatto shop. The middle one was University Pizzaeria which was closed couple years ago.
Tony's Hideaway! Went to many calculus classes drunk on cheap drafts from the Hideaway!Speaking of bars, they are building one on campus I believe. Also a tattoo shop is opening on Lincoln. What about repairs to 5th avenue? That road is hell
Looks like this is the new bar on campus, Pete's Pub. Where Upie used to be on Lincoln.

Now that the season is over, any word when the east end press box will get started? Went past today and the shanty is still up. They have 1.5 million already pledged for it.
Thank you for the info and your quick response. It will totally change the appearance of the Ice Castle.Agree 100% There is a LOT we could be doing to improve the fan football experience. Look at what JMU is doing with club seating, etc. and you can see how far behind the curve the YSU Athletic Department is, but this is a very necessary first step.
Project is still under review trying to find a contractor from what I hearknow something about construction projects, I bet you left out the words "trying to fine a contractor that will do the project for our estimated price, from what I hear.
According to JT, construction won't start until the fall... Yikes.I suppose there is a ton of "behind the bleachers" work they could do in the fall, but that does seem odd to start a football stadium construction project at the start of football season?!?!
According to JT, construction won't start until the fall... Yikes. It really should not be a surprise to anyone.
According to JT, construction won't start until the fall... Yikes.
Ask yourself this, "what would be the worst, most inconvenient time for this project." If your answer is "fall" then the start date will be fall! Pretty simple if you think like a bureaucrat! The good news is, the worse the mess is around Stambaugh stadium, the better the chance we have a great season and draw a bunch of people that can't park, etc. This is a proven variant on Murphy's law! "What can go wrong will go wrong at the worst possible time!"According to JT, construction won't start until the fall... Yikes.
Come on.....fall???
I won't believe it till I see it.
One word comes to mind, bureaucrats. The bane of modern society.
Historically "bureaucrat" was not a negative term, but it is almost like a swear word today. That is the same thing that bogs down any efforts at sports marketing as well. Everybody hard at work doing their jobs, and no good coming from all the effort!
With attendance being pathetic closing the other side shouldn’t be a big deal
1AA, you are SO predictable. I could have writing that response for you!
Let me get this straight, "We still attack an AD's ability on facilities even after we have said on multiple occasions that his activities regarding facilities is not in question" Does that mean because you say it isn't in question, it is not within our rights to question? Seriously?
Whatever.
In fairness to me, I have never been anti Montgomery. Never saw him fumble or throw an interception or miss a block. I have pointed out the difference in offensive philosophy between Bo and Shane and, IMO, an untenable difference between the HC and OC that should have (and has) led to the departure of Monty. Shane isn't wrong, Bo isn't right, they just differ and that can't work longer term. BUT I have never been anti Montgomery. I also think in fairness to Bo, he came in acting a lot like the blustery foul mouthed guy that got fired at Nebraska. I don't know what has mellowed him here, but his behavior has been FAR better than before YSU and better than I expected. Bo deserves credit for him improvement.
How any rational human being can look at the changes in YSU during BOTH of the tenures of Jim Tressel at YSU and not admire what is true greatness, is amazing to me. By the same token, how anyone could look at the dismal leadership of the athletic department for the last 20 years and not be aghast at the lack of leadership direction and accomplishment is also amazing to me.
You have the right to love the work of Strollo, that's fine by me, but I reserve the right to make up my own mind, thank you!
Strollos greatness
From go guins: "but sports at YSU is all about football."IF, is a very big word in a story, isn't it. This issue with MBB is, while we have 1AA in football, we don't have it is BB. We also don't have any conference rivalries because we play FB and BB in two different leagues. As long as we have split leagues and need to compete against OSU, Kentucky, and Duke in any tournament appearance, rating anywhere near football is going to be really hard. I have supreme confidence in Coach Calhoun, but getting MBB anywhere close to FB is going to be a MAJOR struggle.
go guins, I love football but you should include men's basketball in your statement. If the men's team did well they would be the talk of the town.
Whatever, these same old ignorant conversations go nowhere. Just make sure you guys stop complaining about "the good old boy network". Just make sure to give your donations and buy your tickets. That is what it is all about.I don't even know WTF your "good boy network" comment is about, but if you are implying the $$$ influences college athletics, well, welcome to the 20th century! (maybe the 21th will be coming to a site near you soon!)
You know what good old boy network is & JT is now the head of it. Yet you somehow seem to dislike it when it is applied to Strollo. Fair is fair. I never like the Catholic school pissers either Go, but they do keep the floor cleaner, but somehow the school misses how much dirtier it makes the toilet stalls. I could care less about men's BB, put the $$ in the ladies program, at least we stand a chance there. Even though there is no audience, the media is falling all over women's sports. We already play UWGB & IUPUI, let's add close teams like Belmont, Central Michigan, Buffalo, Drake, Missouri State, Ball State and RMU (we occasionally play them already). These are all great MM good programs & we can compete there. I mean it certainly was not our men's program that got us into the MCC/horizon.No, actually I don't know what you are talking about regarding the good ol' boy network. Certainly JT is a card carrying member, but I really don't know what you are talking about regarding JT, Strollo, and the network.
Stambaugh is now maybe a top 25 stadium in FCS. Definitely not top 10 anymore.Agreed. Not sure how to rate domes, but we rank maybe 4 or 5th in the MVFC and that can affect recruiting.
Saying we have fallen out of the top 10 is probably fair ...we are still close & I may rate things differently than others. However, I would like to point out that most of the top stadiums still have a track around them. Our visiting lockers are a bit out of the top-10, but our lockers and weights are tops. Our surface it up with the best. We have 2 scoreboards, our capacity is still over 20k. You guys seem infatuated with a dome. My gosh, going to UNI is like going into Beeghly Center. Now, I think that the new weight room, the relocation of other sports facilities have made the football player facilities much nicer, that still remains the biggest weakness of the facility. Yet how many other programs have a multi-use facility? The new dinning hall is nice. I just do not think you can compare things that are not the same. Leave the dome go & rate them separately. Most domes at our level are a joke. Six teams use professional or share facilities with major institutions (so they cannot be considered I-AA facilities). Again it is a case where everyone wants to be Ohio State and will just gripe for the rest of their lives.I, for one, think domes SUCK! They are "required" if you live in some God forsaken hole like Fargo ND etc. But I'm 100% bought into a 21,000 seat outdoor facility for football. The benefits for a dome are as follows:
Domes are not stadiums, especially at our level, and should not be included in any best stadium discussion. Football is meant to be played outside, no matter where.I generally agree with your negative attitude toward domes, but, with all due respect, the Fargo Dome is a first rate facility. we think of "cold" in Ohio terms, but "Fargo cold" is another thing entirely! Frankly I'm glad they have a dome. The UniDome, on the other hand..............
I have no first hand knowledge of any other 1-AA stadium so I cannot do a fair compare, with that said I would have to think that we are in the top tier. Certainly the project for the East side will add to the status.
I have always hoped that we would close in one of the end zones with seating, with attendance what it has been there is not way to justify the concrete. But it would be nice to build up the north end zone to make it a little higher, plant with grass and allow fans to sit there and watch the game. Kinda like a picnic atmosphere.
BTW, I would be willing to bet that people from the plain states would be miserable if they spent a traditional winter in Ashtabula, Conneaut or Erie. During a year when the lake does not freeze until late, the moisture makes life just miserable. Most of the plain states have a much more dry cold. However, I do agree that once you get down in temp ...cold is cold.Cold is cold. Coldest days in Fargo could be dangerous for players and fans. Don't forget, they call it the "plains" because there is nothing to stop the wind either!
Look up temps in rural Geuga, or places like Rome (Ohio of course) I bet they have broken those Fargo records every winter for the past 3 or 4 years. (-41f just this year alone). BTW. there is much more protection from the wind in Fargo, than across Lake Erie :)That's why nobody wants to go the Ashtabula!
But yes ....cold is cold. Not sure I would like a dome either.
They received two more donations of 100k each to name the radio booths in the new multimedia center. Construction should start summer/early fall.so we'll hear Bob Hannon say "coming to you live from the beautiful new confines of the "1AA & Ytownchief22 radio studio!"

Thanks guys!
Rumor is the tennis courts in between Stambaugh and the Watts are going bye bye replaced by more parking, and a new indoor tennis center is being built over by the soccer and softball stadiums. Target date by fall 2019.
Boardman was sold to the owner of Avalon and Squaw Creek. Plans to remove 4 of the 8 courts for other uses. Need six for college matches so its out.
How many courts do we have in Beeghly? I know they have had 4 setup where the intramural basketball hoops are, but are they official?
Great info Chief. I heard about the Cafaro request at the same time Farmer's Bank submitted. I still do not understand though Eastwood Field is a nice complex, but I do understand that the Scrappers are leaving & the Mall is expanding. Has anyone heard of a new location or are they leaving the valley? Does Cafaro still own the Eastwood Mall?
Thanks,
Dan
Is this construction of the press box to be done by mid August?
According to the article, it is supposed to be finished in Mid-August 2019. Did you guys have inside information that it is to be finished in 2018 instead? Is this construction of the press box to be done by mid August?
Supposed to be, yes.

Construction starts soon. Will be done by mid august.
Any updates on the construction on the east side? Can't tell much by looking from the west stands other than the notch they cut out a month or so ago.
Just an update:This might not have had huge publicity compared to some other projects, but this is a HUGE step forward for the campus.
Contractor has been selected for the building of the new indoor tennis and bowling center. Going to be located on West Scott and Belmont. 6 indoor tennis courts and 6 bowling lanes with bleachers and restrooms.
Once completed in fall 2019, they will take out the outdoor tennis courts by the WATTS and make that all parking and start to build the athletic field where the parking lot is now across the bridge by Cafaro dorms.
Any new news on the progress on the east end press box?

Lots of work being done but this weather puts things on hold for a bit. Still on track to be done by summer.
Stambaugh Stadium will be getting new turf this off season.
And get rid of the stupid Penguin in the middleAnd make Pete bigger in the middle!
And get rid of the stupid Penguin in the middle
We had a poll once before. I like the uniqueness of Pete. A lot more people have heard of Yale, than YSU. Pete is the one-and-only. Again I would accept the head shot; but would rather see them in the end-zones & keep full Pete in the middleWe definitely agree on this. Pete the Penguin are what sets us apart! Love the motto "Fear the Penguin" would love to see that on the face of the press box!
I agree with Chief. The penguin looks dumb in the middle."Penquin for life" and get rid of the penguin support in the same post? Interested dichotomy

I think this proves my theory. Our fans are a bunch of twats. And Chief is King Harry Twat.
Care to differ? Please please me.
Give me the Y any day of the week over the Penguin and spin it around so those viewing at home on ESPN+ and ESPN3 don't see it backwards, looks bush league on tv.
