YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Spring Football
« on: January 27, 2021, 10:14:48 AM »
I'm hearing Craycraft will start, Waid inconsistent throwing the ball.  But Waid will be used in many roles; QB, RB, Tight end.  Waid is big and strong and can be used in many ways.  TE Miles Joiner has left the program.

WE need to get more consistent QB play to compete in this conference.  I hear good things about Coach Phillips practices and the players buying into the new coaching staff.  I still think it will be a rough spring, going to take a couple years to get this turned around.

But I think Phillips has a chance, he understands recruiting and will commit the time needed.

Heacock 0-9 against Northern Iowa, come on, he had to go.

Wick you nailed it.  Had LSU really looked at what was happening at YSU they would have seen how bad his defenses were here.

We open on a Sunday.  I could see at most 4 wins, which would be a great season for Phillips.  But that may be unrealistic, thinking YSU will win all four that could go either way.

Spring season will begin on February 20, our first two games on the road.  Trying to avoid playing home games until early March because of the weather.  Likely open at UNI or ND St, both have domes.

16 team playoff field is correct.  We are in a total rebuild, doesn't matter if there were 30 teams in playoffs, we are not making post season.  We are 0-8 in last 8 road league games, hard to believe how far this program has fallen.

There are four full-time staff working in the Sports Information Department.  For a smaller D-1 program that needs to cut costs that ridiculous.   I know times are changing and there may be more sports, but when Greg Gulas was there was a one man band.  I would also make the case that Greg got a lot media coverage for YSU as well.

YSU Penguin Athletics / Missouri Valley cancels media day
« on: August 07, 2020, 08:34:32 AM »
The Missouri Valley Conference canceled its scheduled Monday media day, and will not reveal the preseason all conference selections today which was the original plan.

It appears The Big Sky is likely going to cancel football as well, meaning there are probably not enough FCS conferences to have the playoffs.  The Missouri Valley could be a regular season, but with no post season.  It appears that is unlikely.

Peterson's offensive line underachieved last year, that group had experience and was supposed to be a strength.  Not sure what he did to get a promotion.  He has landed some good jobs during his career, but he can't keep them.   He parts ways rather quickly, which might be a red flag.

Wick you bring up a very good point.  O line looks very shaky.  Overall major concerns about this season, no proven QB as well.  I saw an early FCS Poll, and I apologize for not knowing which one, but they have North Dakota State, South Dakota State, UNI as their top three in the nation.   Phillps has so much work to do to get the YSU program competitive.

Agree on complete rebuild, and asking anything more of Coach Phillips is unfair.  Already up against it, new coaching staff and no spring ball is not good.

But bigger issue is the conference is stronger than ever, and was very evident last year.  It is much more than top heavy, Southern Illinois beat us by 25, and they deserved a playoff berth;  they have just about everyone back, they did graduate all american safety Jeremy Chinn.  South Dakota scored 56 on us, they had a top 15 recruiting class, and although they graduated a good QB, they have many returning.

Demand football being played, lol.  You are so shortsighted.   What happens when a college football team has several players test positive?   Who is paying for the testing?  What happens when a coaching staff tests positive?

YSU like many colleges are laying off staff and pay cuts are happening and have taken place, but you want to charter a jet and fly YSU 4 times across the country and yet there likely is no or little revenue coming into the program?  Each charter costs at least 80 thousand dollars.

This isn't Ohio State where there are millions of dollars coming in from television contracts.

As for football returning, this issue is much larger than social distancing and games being played without fans.  At the FCS level, and YSU specifically how do you justify flying a football team four times at around $80,000 per charter when you have zero revenue coming in?   Also, YSU is asking employees to take pay cuts, and who pays for the testing of players?

High level FBS is a completely different story because of major television contracts.

Not looking to get into a Strollo bashing, but I am not a fan.  He is not proactive in anything he does, he can't handle change, that is why marketing is stuck in the 1970's.   That being said, he doesn't have the ability or skill set to do this.  It would have to come from above.

Also, the sports information director married Strollo's sister, you think he is getting furloughed?  I would think at some point the economics of this would cause major cuts, and potentially head coaches taking pay cuts and each athletic program losing assistants.

State universities are taking big hits, look what Governor DeWine did this week, a 775 million dollar cut to the budget.

I never understand the Carson Ryan stuff.  I probably saw him play 10 times over four years, I don't think he could play D-3 college basketball.   Watched him score 4 points in district final vs Chaney, completely overwhelmed by Chaney's athleticism.  Very slow, doesn't shoot it well, what is there to like about his game?

Slocum's grandson and another player on that Struthers team were both better than Ryan.
