YSU Penguin Athletics / Re: Missouri State

There was a game, I believe in the early 1980s, later 19070s, at I believe Western MI, that I was listening to on the radio as a kid. We were getting beat badly in the first half, and then there was a huge rally to win. To this day is the most exciting game I’ve ever listened to.

Trivia question: Which current MVFC program is the only one not to have their State’s name included in their University’s name?

Whenever there’s an absurd system where some rule others…the rulers will ALWAYS pillage, abuse, lie to, propagandize, and tyrannize those they rule over. Whether politicians were role models or not would be irrelevant if ppl didn’t loathe and fear their freedom so much.

Speaking for myself, I’d sacrifice wins for ethics. I don’t care who grinds up on another in a bar, but I suspect Meyer would be a repackaged Pelini debacle.

I would say a resounding “no,” and I’m definitely not suggesting it is something he’d consider, but just curious what the welcome would be for such a hire.

Akron pounded by a previously winless team that lost to Duquesne lol.

How much longer does Akron fake being an FBS team?

If you need to feel better about YSU FB, you need to look no further than our neighbors in the lowly MAC. I say lowly because that's where Massey Ranks the MAC as a FBS conference...dead last.

Currently, of the 12 MAC programs, two have winning records.

Can't and Akron are both 1-3, with Akron's only win over Bryant. Akron literally buys its own tickets to meet NCAA attendance requirements.

Out of 130 FBS programs, Massey ranks Akron #127 and OU #126.

I don't think I've ever read an article where a sports writer torches a program as badly as in the link below (it is from 2019).

https://www.beaconjournal.com/news/20191123/bob-dyer-university-of-akron-football-is-invisible

It appears that the MAC FB programs are being keep barely alive by P5 revenue (Akron vs Auburn and TOSU and Can't vs TA&M and MD). If the P5 splits from the NCAA, I don't see how the G5, especially MAC, continues to exist in it's current state once the plug is pulled on its life source.

Meanwhile, the FCS conferences are realigning, and with the exodus out of the OVC, there are rumors that Murray State will join a newly formed East Division of the MVFC with YSU. IF this happens, this means less travel for YSU and a lower SOS (prolly a good thing).

My two cents....as long as the MVFC is willing to keep the roadkill YSU program as a member, let's stay there and languish until the MAC's inevitable demise...and then establish an Ohio-centered FCS conference...where we can all suck together...although Strollo will prolly sabotage it if the opportunity arises....because he's grossly incompetent.

Playing the long game is fine. Speaking for myself, I'll tolerate losing seasons for years to come, as long as the program conducts itself with class.

The problem is that the Athletic Department is incompetent, and I mean incompetent in a legendary way. Supporting factors such as scheduling, funding, promotion will all be sabotaged by this ineptitude.

As long as Strollo is there...what you see is what will continue...and he is likely there for another 15 years....and then after he's retired, maybe you rebuild...or maybe you again hire another incompetent who's there for decades.

Also, the play calling gives the impression of a fear to play the game, and even a lack of understanding of basics like clock management and the need to adjust/respond to your opponents adjustments. I like DP...but IDK if someone who (or who's coordinators) call plays like that can upgrade enough to be an MVFC contender.

The worst HCs in program history still are:

1) Bo Pelini (I doubt he ‘ll ever lose this distinction), and
2) Jon (I was handed the team of the 90s and 💩 on it) Heacock

The worst loss in recent program history is still the Butler loss....not to a “SEC of the FCS” team.

Maybe my goals are set too low, but DP hasn’t made me disgusted to be a Penguin fan or an alumni. He’s an immense upgrade to the filth that preceded him.

I’ll finish with two questions:

How was the FB program in the decade pre-AD Strollo?

How has it been with Strollo as AD?

After all the program has gone through, I'm looking for a modicum of competence and integrity. I cannot support a team that self-sabotages and lacks basic ethics. Ws are nice but not at any cost.

So far, I like DP....a lot. However, he and his coordinators need to grow along with the players. Their fright and complete lack of confidence was obvious in the play calling. Ppl want to win but also be entertained. He's also got to lose the damn mask.

I have to politely disagree here.  First game after a year of COVID practices, iffy spring season and a two month turnaround - why would you want to put these inexperienced players in situations that they are not confident and know will not work due to lack of progress or experience.  These are young, hungry coaches also, let them coach the kids to their abilities - not what you expect them to be.  Coaches know talent and what a kid can and cannot do on the field - if you put them in situations they have no confidence in or are not prepared - paralysis through analysis and you get poor play, frozen feet, over guessing and lack of instinctual play.  It is not lack of confidence in play calling, it is coaching to the current abilities of your talent - coaches that expect more than their kids can do, will fail because they are not prepared for what you want from them.  "Are you not entertained?!!"  What is this Gladiator?  You want entertainment watch the NFL...or UFC.  You want a clown on the field?  Pelini was a clown and entertaining to watch on the field - look how well he did?  I love what I am seeing in Phillips so far - lots of intangibles and the kids are wanting to play - that is a big hurdle after the last three years.

GO GUINS!

I hear ya, but if you’re foregoing the public’s desire to be thrilled and entertained, then you also forego larger crowds and the revenue it brings. Only a select few will spend their precious Saturdays there due to loyalty alone. The University has a product and benefits from its revenue generation. Make it the best show possible is all I saying.

The BSC making some noise as well:

EWU over UNLV, and
Griz over #20 Huskies

Same stuff, different day in the MAC as Can’t & Zits get demolished.
