Nebraska and Tressel and the mess that is the UNLV coaching search

Actually, what happens in Vegas rarely stays in Vegas, because people that come here for vacation tend to post their exploits on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram....etc.

As for Tark, while he was not a saint, the NCAA did not like him because he would not allow them to bully him. And, ultimately, the UNLV Administration turned on Tark. Those teams of the late 70's, 80's and early 90's are the only reason many people even knew there was a University here in Las Vegas. There likely would not be a Thomas & Mack Center if not for Tark.UNLV used to be referred to as Tumbleweed Tech before Tark put the school on the map.

Tarks battle with the NCAA goes all the way back to the 60's, when he wrote op-ed pieces in the Long Beach Newspaper about the hypocrisy of the NCAA. Most notably, the way the NCAA selectively chooses the schools to punish, and also the punishments. Tark even appeared before the US Supreme Court, where the court said that the N.C.A.A.’s treatment of him was “constitutionally inadequate” but ruled against him because the N.C.A.A. was a private organization.

I have little doubt UNLV mens basketball was breaking NCAA rules while Tark was HC. Heck, they are probably breaking NCAA rules now. The question is, to what degree, and did the NCAA have it out to dig up every possible piece of dirt on Tark, while overlooking similar things going on at other schools.

Something that rarely gets mentioned is the rate at which his players graduated. As you know, he made UNLV a refugee for guys in need/want of 2nd or 3rd chances. Players who played for Tark graduated at a rate higher than the UNLV average. At the time Tark retired, the graduation rate for his players was 50%. Not great, but about average for NCAA programs. And, while several players did flunk out or drop out, many left UNLV to go and play professionally. In 2012, the 6 year graduation rate for ALL college students in the United States was 56%. So, 50% for a so called "rogue program" on which the players were treated as celebrities by not just the people of Vegas, but by people like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr,

To me, Tark was alot like Tressel, only without the Mr. Rogers/Choir Boy image. They each were willing to give guys 2nd and 3rd chances. If players listened to them, and showed that they were trying to do right, they were supported. Sometimes, supported to a fault. They were more than coaches to many of their players. They were friends, brothers, uncles, probation officers, teachers. And, both will unfortunately be known for the mistakes they made, rather than all the kids they helped, the lives they changed and the success of their teams.

UNLV has a beautiful baseball stadium as well.  The improvments you said, I know exactly what you are talking about the enterence by the locker rooms and what not....that's where we entered from after a long hot day of tailgating and remember thinking what a dump lol.  You are right though, not the best but not the worse.

Awesome pictures of the football facility of that high school...just wow, it blows my mind.  I knew that family donated a bunch of money for that tennis facility, seen that in articles on the UNLV search (I've kept an eye on UNLV since going out to that game, the Rebel fans were very good to us in the tailgate lot so I always pull for them now).

Great to see them figuring out transportation to the game.  When the wife and I flew out, we had no clue what to do getting to the game and were looking into bussing or any other option.  Luckily the gopher website I go to (gopherhole) we had a meetup in Vegas and some Gopher fans had an extra spot on a hug conversion van so we chipped in on it, went and got a bunch of beer and chipped in on a tailgate  pass.

We are hoping to get to Vegas again soon.  So if I make it in, look out for some YSU gear :)  My wife swam at YSU and knows some people who swims at UNLV so we want go check out that facility.  She's now the head coach at Hubbard so looks like I will be at some HS swim meets this year.  :/

hoops24,

There is supposed to be an announcement on Saturday in regards to next HC at UNLV. Sanchez is denying all of the rumors, but Bishop Gorman plays in State Championship Game on Saturday day afternoon. Kind of odd UNLV would have an announcement about the new HC scheduled for AFTER the Gorman game has ended, and Sanchez not be named HC. There are alot of people here that want Jim Fassel as the next HC. He lives here, has alot of experience, and has said he would be interested in the job. Everything just seems to point to Sanchez already having the job. If it is true about the amount of money the Fertitta family is rumored to be willing to donate to UNLV, can't say I blame the AD for going with Sanchez. It's not like the program can get worse on the field, and Sanchez might actually be able to convince more kids from Vegas area to go to UNLV rather than other schools. Also, if anything, attendance would likely increase with Sanchez as HC, at least to start. From there, it would depend on how team does off the field. Either way, UNLV would most likely be looking for a new HC in another 4-5 years. Given past history, likely scenario would be to replace a coach fired or who resigned. And, if someone gets hired, can have 2-3 winning seasons in a row, they would likely get hired away by a school in a higher profile conference that pays more. The HC at Colorado State is leaving to take the job at Florida. This was only his 3rd season at CSU.

We live right on the edge of campus. Can see the baseball stadium lights from out apartment. Same wit hte lights of practice football field and soccer field. There is a UNLV academic building behind our apartment complex, one next to out complex and further down the road a UNLV parking deck.

We go walking alot back in the area where the baseball stadium, soccer fields, track, tennis courts, natatorium and softball fields are located. The baseball stadium is very nice. It would have been demolished if the original stadium plans had come to fruition, as that is the area the football stadium was to be built. Baseball stadium, track, softball stadium and not sure what else all would have then been moved to a parcel of land near corner of Trpicana Ave and Swenson.

I've never been in the natatorium, but from what I know it is pretty nice. Actually, with the exception of Sam Boyd Stadium, all the athletic facilities at UNLV are rather good. Football practice area could be better, but there are 2 turf fields and one grass field, and entire area has lights so team can practice at night. An indoor facility would really help, given how hot it gets here in the summer and early fall. Plus, that is the type of thing recruits look for when deciding on a school.

UNLV men had people qualify for NCAA Finals in several events this past season. From what I know, men's program seems to be better than womens program. There have been changes to the Strip since you were here in 2012. And if you wanted to stay off strip but still be close to the strip, there is an off strip hotel/casino not far from the campus you might want to look into. It is called Silver 7's. Used to be called Terrible's. It's at corner of Flamingo and Paradise.

About 20 minute walk to Strip, or you can ride bus. First 4-5 months after moving here, we walked from a Starbucks near Silver 7's to the Strip 4-5 times a week, typically around 11:30pm - 12:30am. Never had any problems, as road has high volume of traffic, and there are always people out walking on Flamingo. Also more than one business open 24/7, including another hotel/casino called Tuscany. And, for future reference, Tropicana bus runs 24/7, and there are 2 buses on The Strip that go Downtown. Duece on The Strip runs 24/7(every 15 minutes from 7AM-2AM, every 20 minutes 2AM-7AM) and goes from Freemont Experience in Downtown to South Strip Terminal, which is just past LV Premium Oulets(South location)... The other bus is SDX and it runs from 9am-Midnight(every 15 minutes). Goes from Premium Oulets North(downtown area) to South Strip Terminal. Whenever possible, I'd recommend the buses or walking instead of a taxi. Also, it is illegal in Vegas to hail a cab. I have no idea why? Never heard of anything like that until moving here. If/when you are getting ready to come back out, you can send me a private message if you want.

It's not a huge place, and being off the strip rates are likely lower. Has a hotel, plus casino and there is a sportsbook in the casino. There are 2 restaurants, open 24 hours, with 1 being a buffet. Another open from 5pm-9pm Friday-Saturday It's about a 10 minute walk at most from Silver 7's to Hard Rock Hotel/Casino. Probably 15-20 minute walk max to UNLV Natatorium. If you took bus to the strip, it would be 5-10 minutes, and you would get off at intersection where Caesar's Palace, Bellagio and Bally's are located. Bill's Gambling Hall was totally renovated and renamed, and Caesars has built a 550 foot tall observation wheel, plus area called The Linq, which has stores, restaurants and more.

Good luck to your wife with coaching. I remember when she swam for YSU.
