You are one lucky sumb****. We just returned from our first trip there. It probably was the most fun i've ever had anywhere.

Penguin Nation,
Living here is much different than coming for a Vacation. Moved here at end of May 2012. First 4-5 months went to The Strip 4-5 times a week. We have gone maybe 2 times since Dec 2012. Us "locals" pretty much avoid that area at all costs. Well, alot of people work there, and people will go when family/friends are in town, to have a nice dinner on a special occasion or go to a show.
We live just a few miles East of the Strip, right on edge of UNLV campus. Seeing the strip lit up t night never gets old. But, any time we have to go to the West Side for something, it sucks dealing with the traqfficf on and near the Strip.
I like it here because of the diversity, the weather from Oct-late April(summer is brutal), relatively low cost of living for city this size, much more of live and let live attitude than back in Ytown/Cleveland/Pittsburgh...etc. Not sure there is anything such as "normal" here. And, get away from The Strip, and it is pretty much like any other city this size. The 24/7 thing is just The Strip, few blocks to East and West of Strip and then Downtown. Although, there is no "final call" here, and one can buy alcohol at CVS, Walgreen's, grocery stores...etc. And, not just beer and wine, but ANY type of alcohol. Also slot machines in places like grocery stores, convenient stores, Dollar General...etc. I wouldn't trust the machines in those kind of places
Interestingly, all the years in Ytown/Warren helped prepare me well for Vegas. I'm not like OMG, there is crime, corruption, gangs, people selling drugs...etc. Yea, I know, experienced all that in Ytown. Per capita, hard to beat Ytown for that type of thing, especially the corruption. I like Vegas, but would not want to live in any other part of Nevada. We are kind of like our own state here. Metro area population is about 2 MILLION. Clark County population about 2.2 MILLION. Entire population of Nevada is about 3 MILLION.
Glad to hear you enjoyed your vacation. Not sure there is any place like Vegas in the world. Doesn't mean it is the best place, just that Vegas is Vegas.
This is for everyone, curious what you think. There are 3 multi-team basketball tournaments here in Vegas. Teams play 2 games at campus sites, then 2 games here. I think it one of these would be nice tournament for YSU. Two are in November(they were last week). The 3rd is a few days before Christmas. I think it would be nice trip for the team. And, tournaments are the kind where there are 4 so called "big programs", and then 4 mid-major type teams. UWM played in one of the tournaments this year. Also, UNLV plays 5-6 mid major to lower major OOC games in basketball. This year, they have already played Morehead State and Albany. Morehead State is/was also in one of the tournaments played here. So, how about a road game in Vegas for YSU in basketball? Could even make it part of a 2 game trip, with the 2nd game being Southern Utah, Northern Arizona, UNR, or school in California. Then, that school plays return game in Ytown the following season.
And, in football, UNLV typically plays an FCS opponent. Last year, they played WIU. 2015 still has one opening, as current OOC games are at NIU at Michigan(getting paid $1 MILLION) and UCLA at home. Most likely looking for FCS team for the 4th OOC game.... 2016 they play at UCLA, at CMU, Idaho at home....2017 Arkansas State here, at Idaho at Ohio State($1.3 MILLION payday).... either 16 or 17, they will also play BYU here in Vegas. In 16, UNLV plays at Hawaii, so they can schedule 13 games. Which would mean still looking for another game.... 2018 only 1 game scheduled...at Arkansas State... 2019 nothing as of now... 2020 at Iowa State and LA TECH here...2021 Iowa State at home..... I'm not sure what UNLV pays as far as a guarantee. Also not sure when next season is that YSU can play 12 games. But, UNLV would be nice trip for players and fans. And, barring a miraculous turnaround with the new HC a very winnable game. My thinking is game at UNLV along with a $$$$$$$ game, then say Duquesne and Robert Morris, Butler, Valpo(pick one at home). Highly possible to go 3-1, win over FBS team and great road trip. Wait, makes too much sense :'(
UNLV beat Northern Colorado 13-12 this year
In 2012, they lost to Northern Arizona
In 2011, lost to Southern Utah

Let's Talk,
I know what you mean. We live on an island in FL, but haven't gone to the beach in over a year.
While in Vegas, we were able to see Hoover Dam, the Grand Canyon, Sedona, and Valley of Fire (or something like that). Lots to do there. Glad you are happy there.
Lets_Talk:
Valley of Fire is amazing.... Glad to hear you got to see more than just the Strip. This is such a beautiful part of the country. We drove from Ytown to Vegas. Trip was boring until we got West of Denver. Then, the rest of the way was OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ..... Rocky Mountains, then desert mountains most of way in Utah, then Virgin River Gorge in Arizona, Valley of Fire.
We do not have a car, so have not been able to get to the places not serviced by public transit. Mountains are breathtaking, even after 2 1/2 years. Nice in winter to see snow on mountains, but it be 50's or 60's here in the valley. Definitely much, much different in a host of ways from back East.
So, any thoughts on my idea about YSU playing in a basketball tournament that has games in Vegas, playing UNLV in basketball or even in football. Also, womens team could play UNLV in basketball. MWC is better than HL on men's side, but for the women, HL is as good or better than MWC, and UNLV is about middle of the pack. Another reason I propose this, is because there is a wealth of talented athletes here in Vegas. Also could recruit Arizona and Cali while out here. And, both of those states have loads of high school talent, plus plenty of JUCO's. I think people who could afford to make the trip would come, and then there are the people who either went to YSU or are from Ytown area that now live here, Cali, Phoenix...etc.
I know former YSU President Cynthia Anderson lives in Boulder City, which is maybe 20-25 miles from Vegas. She hosted an Alumni get together at her house either earlier this year, or late last year. Got the invite from Alumni Association
Penguin Nation:
Funny, Les Cochran lives near us in FL, and just ran for the Board of Education.
The tournament sounds like an improvement as the MBB OOC schedule has the likes of Wilberforce and Thiel. I do think such a tournament would draw interest to the YSU MBB program, and fans may even follow the team there due to the uniqueness of the location.
As an aside, idk why there isn't an Allegiant direct flight from YNG to McCarren. My understanding is that Allegiant's HQ is in Vegas. There are multiple cities here in FL (I think four) that have direct service to YNG, and the flights are packed whenever I take them. Seems like YNG-McCarren would be popular...as the Austintown Racino just doesn't offer enough gaming.
