EVAN CROUTCH
« on: November 19, 2014, 03:54:43 PM »
Just heard from someone who would know, that YSU football recruit Evan Croutch from Boardman is now not coming and last night committed to Ohio U.  Story goes that he was at the Ohio vs Northern Illinois game and made his decision afterwards.

  Anyone else hear this?

This right here is a perfect example of why we succeeded in the 90's and we can't now. Local kids don't want to play here where as 20 yrs ago they did. First reason is we were winning titles and they loved playing for Tressel.

If someone wants to decommit for the supposed "promised land" of the MAC, by all means let them. If they think playing on Tuesday nights is cool and sweet, then don't let the door hit you on your way out.

You know playing front of the 300 people like Akron and UMass did last night is real top notch.

Yet playing in front of 100 at YSU is?  Our crowds are pathetic even when the weather is nice.  Some people on this board are just bitter because YSU gets snubbed.  You get more exposure playing for a crappy MAC team then you do for an average MVC team.

The CAA has a contract with NBCSN.  I watched the JMU-Richmond game on it last weekend.  The MVFC is on ESPN3 webfeed.

If YSU were in the CAA, we'd have a less expensive travel budget, increased fan interest, more likelihood of a post-season invite, and nationwide exposure on cable TV.

Regarding this kid, success begets success. Failure begets failure.  Obviously YSU didn't sell themselves to him, and OU did.  YSU  is in the position...again....of having to rebuild a winning image....if that's even what their goal is.

This really isn't as complicated as everyone is making it.

I don't question the abilities of YSU recruits, but now, it is safe to say that I was surprised that Wolford recruited this kid.  I saw him twice in person over the past two years, against an average Mooney team and a bad Mooney team.  If you drew up a list of the top five players on the field in both of those years, Croutch would not have been on it.  Good luck to him in Athens.  Expect more verbal commitment defections unless we get that miracle on Saturday and Wolford survives.

First off, as bad as our crowds have been this year, Akron and Kent's have been worse. If you don't believe me, turn on ESPN3 and notice how often they pan on the crowd.

Secondly, all of YSU's MVFC games this year have been on ESPN3 with the exception of the Missouri State game which was still broadcast live locally. In addition, our game against Illinois was on the BTN. So 9 of our 12 games were available for anyone in America to watch. That is pretty darn good exposure for this program IMHO. If you think playing once a year on ESPN2, ESPNU, or CBS Sports Network makes the MAC far better, than that is fine.

Bitter, I think not.

By and large, most area players going to MAC schools are no better than current YSU players and many are not as good. There is a Poland QB starting for one win Kent. Many players at various MAC schools who struggle to play at losing programs. The kid this thread is about is no star and nothing to cry over. The locals still don't understand this area is no longer special as it used to be for recruiting. The players recruited by the B1G, yes. The MAC, no. And as far as attendance, many of those MAC teams don't draw the required NCAA 15k and have not for years. This thread is much ado about nothing.

It's not a big loss anyway. Not fast/athletic enough to see the field. Special teams type player maybe.

Half of the MVFC would run through the MAC.

Well said. There's something to the computer ratings that have our conference above the MAC too.

Totally agree--and also agree with Sean for the most part--I think that more than half of the MVFC would run through the MAC.This area had a lot more talent in the early 90's with a lot more schools and with larger enrollments--nowadays some of the best talent in the area is no better than D2 and D3 and the few with 4 star credentials will head for the larger D1 schools.
