Two walk-ons from the greater-Youngstown area have joined the Youngstown State women's basketball program for the 2014-15 season, Penguins head coach John Barnes announced.
Sarah Cash, a 6-foot-1 freshman forward who graduated from Lordstown High, joined the program during the summer and was able to go through team workouts. Ashley Kirila joined the program officially on Wednesday with the start of YSU's fall semester. Kirila is a 6-foot forward who graduated from Brookfield High.
"I'm very excited to have two talented players from the Youngstown area join our program," Barnes said. "Sarah and Ashley both bring size and athleticism to our team. They're both hard workers who are willing to do what it takes to help our program succeed."
Cash was a Third-Team All-Ohioan at Division IV as a senior at Lordstown when she averaged 17.8 points. She was named the Youngstown area Girls Basketball Player of the Year by the Curbstone Coaches Association as well as a First-Team All-District honoree. Cash was a first-team all-state selection as a junior when she averaged 22.5 points and 17 rebounds. She finished her career as the Red Devils' career leader with 1,774 points and 1,294 rebounds.
Kirila was routinely honored among the top players in Trumbull County in her career for the Warriors. She was a second-team all-county selection in each of her last two years, and she was a special mention all-district pick as both a junior and senior.
