YSU Women's Tennis - CHAMPIONS
« on: April 27, 2014, 06:56:01 PM »
A few weeks ago an ignorant poster made comments about the state of YSU athletics, and said our tennis program was poor.

Make no mistake about it. The women's Tennis Team was the best Tennis program in the Horizon League.

Add the women's championship to the long list of Penguins Athletics Excellence!

Well even he has to admit he was wrong about women's tennis.

People need to know that words have meaning. Unfortunately, many on here don't know that.

The women were all season long expected to win the championship. They had a set back against Milwaukee in the regular season, but anyone, who knew anything about our women's tennis program knew that we were coming into this season as the favorites to win it all.

Our tennis program has made a complete turn around. A few years ago the men's program was one of the worst in the country. Now they finished in the semi-finals of our conference tournament.

And the women's tennis program finally dethroned the long time champion UIC Flames.

Ohh yeah, plus we beat our rivals, Cleveland State. Victory is sweeeeetttt!

Just add to the long list of YSU Championships.

Congrats ladies! Good luck in the NCAA's!

Glad to see that someone finally mentioned that we go to the NCAA regional. Don't quite me on the time, but I believe t is today at 3pm. They will select 72-teams + 17 individual at-large players.

And one of the catalysts for this team is Carolyn Jesko, a local product from Boardman High School. Awesome to see!

I know the Vindicator isn't smart enough to think of this, but someone should do a story on Margarita Sadovnikova and Marta Burak. Sadovnikova is from Russia and Burak from the Ukraine. Two countries on the verge of war, and both players playing with one another, to a championship season.

Like I said, it would make a great story for the Vindicator to do, but would take Joe Scalzo to take :30 seconds worth a prep-work to figure out.

The Youngstown State women's tennis team will gather to watch the 2014 NCAA Tennis Championships selection show on Tuesday at the Ohio Room in the Kilcawley Center at 5 p.m. The Selection Show begins at 5:30 p.m. and is open to the public. The show will air on NCAA.com.

The Selection Show gathering is part of a reception that will also honor YSU endowed scholarship donors as well as their annual recipients afterwards. Youngstown State's Annual Scholar-Athlete Banquet is set to begin at 6 p.m. in the Chestnut Room following the show and reception to conclude a busy evening.

The Penguins advanced to the NCAA Championships for the first time in school history by winning the Horizon League Championship yesterday with a 4-2 win over Cleveland State.

The field of 64 will be announced on NCAA.com at 5:30 p.m. The first round features 16 host sites with four schools at each location. The winners of the four-team single-elimination brackets advance to the finals which are May 15-26 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex at the University of Georgia.

There will be an opportunity for media/fans to talk to Penguins tennis coach Mickael Sopel and members of the team afterwards. If fans cannot make it to the watch party, both shows will be streamed live on NCAA.com.
