IF YOU WERE REAL FOOTBALL PEOPLE YOU WOULD BE BACKING THE TEAM AND SEEING THE PROGRESS BEING MADE.

The folks that come to this board are the ones that go to the games.  You need to get your message to the casual fans.  Maybe calling Ron Verb or writing an editorial to the Vindicator and Tribune.

In terms of the official numbers (the only ones we have to work with, not like the ones that are made up here), average attendance this year will be less than 16,000 per game even if the last two games draw 19,000. The two lowest games were Dayton (12,018) and Morehead St (13,226).  The Thursday night thing clearly didn't work out well--I could imagine lots of people coming up from Dayton on a Saturday.  The Morehead St. game, well, what can I say--schedule a opponent that is too weak and people don't come.

As people move out of the Youngstown, it will be harder to fill the seats.  YSU needs to do some soul searching about what it wants to accomplish, and if filling the seats is a goal, it needs to pay more attention to scheduling and/or promotion. Strutting around like a Penguin saying stuff like "we play for this town" might stir some of the old timers, but they are dying off. I'm thinking marketing needs a complete makeover.

I'm pretty forgiving to those who didn't show up for the Western Illinois game (13,607).  However, the kickoff perception isn't fair, since a number of people, including many diehards, stayed up in the concession area until kickoff or the rain lightened up. It was cold and rainy. Can't blame for people for not wanting to be there since Kurt Hess played like he didn't want to be there, either.

President Randy Dunn's first hire was a new enrollment chief who has been given complete control over the recruitment of students.  Athletics is not his primary priority at this time, but Dunn just might eventually start to ask the same kind of questions about attendance that have been listed in this thread.  A new marketing guru just might make perfect sense to him.  Remember that Anderson is gone and this man is an outsider who owes nobody anything.  If you are a university administrator and you do not perform satisfactorily on either the academic or athletic side, you probably should not be sleeping very well right now.

YSUFAN0505 you are absolutely correct that if we don't have 18,000 it will be a problem.  NDSU plays at the FARGODOME and it is all about the crowd there.  It will be laughable to the Bison's with the current crowds we have had.  They beat K-State in front what 50,000 first game of the season.  I agree with Train if they need to give a free ticket and a hot dog to the homeless to put bodies in the seats that day that's what needs to be done. Get them in there rattling those change cups on third downs that would be a sight to see.  Let them sleep there the night before if we have too.  One of you mentioned an editorial to help. Maybe the HATER could write something positive for once.  Wolford should have body slammed him in the press conference a few weeks ago for his phone going off.  Might have knocked some sense into him and could see the steps that are being made with the decimated program Wolford took over.

I think 12,000 was correct for the Dayton game. Maybe even more. I was there as well. Morehead St.... Not so much

SCALVO - I'm with you ...if YSU is counting as attendance all these corporate tickets....get the brass to start offering them out instead of eating them...I don't give a s*%$ who goes to the game...bandwagon...homeless...high schoolers...get these un-used tickets into the hands of people who want to go to the game...

If you are a corporation who has tix...start a post here...see if it catches on...maybe we can get something going here...

The FARGODOME is a mad-house...

I still think 12,000 for the Dayton game is very generous...and it was a beautiful day...and I believe OSU was off...so there was really no excuse...

how do we bridge the gap between Companies / People with unused tickets to get them in the hands of families who would love to go..???.....
Good question.  I knew a fella that used to go to a lot of games with his employer's tickets.  I believe the company had 10 or 12, and in the 90's they were all used every week, but after Coach T left half of them would go unused on a weekly basis.

Paladin,

About six years ago, your call for Strollo's head resonated widely given the mess created by Heacock, the murder of the women's basketball program, and the sorry state of men's hoops.  But today, with the football team as second best in the toughest FCS league, the basketball team climbing to mid-pack respectability in the Horizon League, and two consecutive good women's hoops hirings, your campaign against Strollo seems a bit silly.  The issues now are athletic marketing and the resources wasted on superfluous assistant athletic directors.

Boy, so many topics in one thread. Sorry to be so long:

Strollo: I think now, and always have, that he does a most excellent job. He is setting YSU up for continued success. Listen to the interviews of ADs during FB and MBB games. You will hear all of them mention WATTS & YSU's campus expansion and how they want to emulate it.

Heacock: Old news, but he did not destroy the program, Like Strollo, he took little & gave back quite a lot. Just not enough. Especially when you consider that either one of our current coordinators make more than coach H and his entire staff ...and this is the first year we have had a decent record. When Tressel was here, we were much more in line with the salaries of other programs, just as we are now with Wolf. Also, there would not have needed to be so much rebuilding had a certain head-coach not forced over 1/3 of the team to quit. You can cover up a wrong by saying they were "dead wood", but people are not stupid. You cannot compare coach H to a couple of terrible WBB coaches.

Crowds: does anyone here remember when the east side was added? it was 1997. So basically, most of Tressel's career here (and all of the "glory years") were in a stadium with a maximum capacity of 16,800 (that 800 is gated standing). So all of those post-season games had about 500-band members and at least twice that number in player/band/staff families & friends. The schools are no longer allowed to pay for these things anymore (band is still allowed to be supplemented, but it has to come from Athletic $$$). I am not going to sit here and say we cannot sell-out games.  However, we are Youngstown ...not Marshall; we have more that 1 other DI football team close at hand. I might also add all of those people who seem to eat, sleep and drink HS football. Why don't you go out to the games Friday night and tell them to save their money for YSU? Would it be unreasonable to claim that, in the Mahoning Valley, several times more people go to games on Friday nights than on Saturdays? Tap into the reasons why this is so and you will sell out every YSU game. Some examples:
1. HS games are free or cheap.
2. Rivals are in your blood & right down the street.
3. Families have lived in school districts for multiple generations & there are legacies.
4. You know the players on the field.
5. The media in this town goes crazy over HS games. Why is there not stories on every YSU opponent in the Vindy and Trib every day? If more people read about YSU opponents, they would look down on the field & know the best players. They would feel an association. Will it instantaneously sell subscriptions, ad space and air time? Of course not, it can take years & generations ...but it is the media's obligation.

Scalz(v)o?: You finally have someone that covers YSU & you complain? This is the best coverage by the Vindy since Tressel ...maybe even further back than that. The Trib has been doing better as well. Heck the Trib is the only paper that used to even cover YSU basketball. Can they do more? Along with the rest of the local media ...yes. However as I said above in the terribly-large post ...it is going to take time and faith. The same thing YSU is asking from us.

Sorry, Wick, but you won't change my mind . The build out of facilities is something most idiot AD accomplish anywhere, given enough time.

I'm  not the one quoted in the paper as saying we don't try to win championships here. I wouldn't have extended Heacock. The women BB coach hires were completely stupid and the men ?  Jerry ( finally) got more than a .500 season ( barely) and the AD bought the team into a postseason tournament, but Butler left the league and several teams really stunk in the Horizon. "Currently" the FB team is second and of course, no playoffs yet. Since 2000, only ONE playoff season. And we can talk extensively about  his poor coach selections overall in the dept. Why do you think the sports future looks" bright" under his" leadership" ? How long will FB be going to playoffs ? How well will BB do in a weaker Horizon ?

The AD has a LONGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG record. Much too early to think of a secure future with him.

But, enjoy. We'll re-visit this, I'm sure.
