YSU to host HL tournament at Eastwood Field

When I saw Stanford on STO in April early in the major league baseball season, my reaction was "oh, I thought YSU had a game today.  I must be wrong."  Nope.  He works for the Indians for every game, home and away.  Turns out his hiring at YSU was little more than a publicity stunt.  So we have a pitching coach that never actually attends our games.  That must be a first for college athletics.  And, as you noted, it certainly contributed to the disintegration of the pitching as the season ran its course.  Why do we continue to do stupid, obvious things that make it even more difficult to succeed with our limited resources?

This is so bizarre...wow. Who on earth thought this was remotely a good idea?

Does Antush have an coaching responsibilities anymore? I really think he had quite a bit of success with our pitchers in the past. If school is is out over in PA, then he is probably at the games. Certainly he is at the night games.

I too want to give the new coach a fair chance. Gillispie has the right connections & attitude; let's hope it transfers to the players. I do not agree that the talent-level on this team is poor. We have the talent (on paper) to easily win the HL this year). I think you are right-on with the need to work with our existing players. However, we need to quickly capitalize on this CWS success in the area (Kent) in terms of recruiting. Kent had a rebuilding year in 2013, and could be nobody by next year, so time is of essence. The local baseball talent in the Valley has always been extraordinary. Both sides of the border.

Youngstown State held a 5-0 lead after four innings, but UIC scored 15 runs over the next four innings to rally and defeat the Penguins 15-5 in an elimination game in the Horizon League Baseball Championship on a cold Friday afternoon at Eastwood Field.

UIC advanced to play another elimination game against Wright State on Friday evening while YSU's season ended with a 14-43 record.

Devin Higgins had three of YSU's six hits and drove in three runs from the ninth spot in the line-up. Joe Betcher was 4-for-4 and scored four times for UIC.

Higgins drove in two runs on a single for YSU in the second after UIC starter Ian Lewandowski beaned three Penguin hitters to load the bases. Higgins then lined a single to left to bring in Kris Moules in the fourth, and Phil Lipari singled in Higgins and Neil Schroth to put the Penguins up 5-0.

YSU starter Blake Aquadro, an all-tournament team selection last season, held the Flames to two hits through four innings before running into trouble in the fifth. He hit Betcher to start the inning, and he allowed two straight singles to load the bases. Ryan Shober brought in the first run on a sacrifice fly, and Aquadro got a fielder's choice for the second out of the inning. Ryan Boss then tripled just under the glove of centerfielder Mike Accardi to get two more runs in, and Boss scored on Alex De LaRosa's single to make the score 5-4.

The Flames scored three two-out runs in sixth, two of which were unearned, and they blew the game open with six runs on three hits, two errors, two walks and a hit batsman in the seventh. The final two runs came in the eighth.

Aquadro, who made his school-record 49th career start, was charged with the loss in his final effort as a Penguin. The senior allowed five earned runs – seven total – on nine hits in 5.2 innings. Mike Schoolcraft got the win for UIC, allowing three runs in five innings of relief of Lewandowski.

1-AA, you're sadly mistaken (again) if you think this team has talent to win this league. Dosch is the only everyday player who would smell the field for Milwaukee and this team has NO pitching whatsoever. Of the two starters who started the tournament games, O'Brien is a journeyman at best and Aquadro is a batting practice pitcher. This team needs a complete overhaul. This season was a disaster, specifically the last month. Non-competitive.
