Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. -- Sophomore Allison Mitzel had a sensational final round at the Horizon League Championships on Sunday and took home medalist honors while the YSU women's golf team finished second.

Mitzel is the fourth Penguin to win the Horizon League Championship. She joins Lori Hatcher (2003), Katie Rogner (2008) and Samantha Formeck (2009) as YSU golfers to win the league title. YSU has had the medalist in four of the 11 tournaments.

Mitzel had a 73 on Sunday after taking the lead with a 71 on Saturday. Throughout Sunday's round she kept increasing her advance leading by six with nine to play and eight with three to play. She finished with a three-round total of 221, an impressive five-over-par for the event, and was seven shots ahead of Valparaiso's Kelly Voigt.

On Sunday, Mitzel had three birdies, four bogeys and 11 pars for her final round. In the 54 holes, she had eight birides, 11 bogeys (five of which came on her first eight holes on Friday) and just one double bogey.

Detroit won the crown with a 920 while YSU placed second with a 940 and Cleveland State was third at 946. Rounding out the field was Valparaiso 950, Loyola 974, Green Bay 996 and UIC 1,008.

YSU finished with a 316 on Sunday to maintain second place. It is the fifth time YSU finished as the runner up at the Horizon League Championships, the first time since 2010.

Sarah Heimlich and Emily Rohanna tied for 11th place with a 239. On Sunday, Heimlich shot a 79 while Rohanna had a round of 82. Heimlich had two rounds of 80 to go with her final 79. Rohanna shot a bounce-back 73 after opening with an 84.

Aislynn Merling tied for 17th place with a three-round score of 244. She posted a final-round 82 on Sunday.

Sana Khan had an 82 in her final round to finish with a three-round score of 250.

Congrats to Poland High's Allison Mitzel, and also a shout out to South Range's Brandon Pluchinsky, who shot a Horizon League record-tying round of 66 at this weekend's men's championship.
