Youngstown State junior third baseman Drew Dosch has been voted the Preseason Horizon League Player of the Year in a poll of the league's baseball coaches that was released on Wednesday.

Dosch was also named to the league's preseason first-team all-league. He was joined on the team by fellow Penguin Jason Shirley, a sophomore outfielder.

Dosch (Canal Winchester, Ohio) batted .353 with eight home runs and 13 doubles in 55 games last season as a sophomore en route to being voted First-Team All-Horizon League. He was also named the Preseason Player of the Year by Baseball America. Shirley (North Huntingdon, Pa.) batted .303 with 31 runs scored, 16 RBIs and a team-high nine steals last year.

Milwaukee's Cale Tassi was voted the Preseason Pitcher of the Year. Valparaiso was tabbed to repeat as the conference champion with three first-place votes. It was followed by Milwaukee, Wright State, UIC and Youngstown State.

The Penguins will begin their 2013 campaign on Friday at Samford.
