Football vs. Illinois State
« on: October 11, 2012, 02:25:28 PM »
Well, we have complained enough, and we are facing another ranked opponent in ILS (or ISU-red for some of you). Here is what I have learned from some studying:

Offense:
-They are balanced, and led by Brown ..the best QB in the conference. Or at least the top-performing QB.
-He has 3 of the top-10 WR's in the conference (2 in the top-5).
-Dunn is a great back.

Defense:
-Top line in the conference ...by a large margin. They have 3 of the top-5 (graded) DL's in the conference (this includes numbers 1 and 2 in Underwood and Palmer). They lead the league in solo tackles, tackle-for-loss.
-Zimmerman is probably the best LB we have faced . Even better than UNI's wellington. Banks is a top BD.

Special teams:
-They give up a lot of yards per punt ...Almost 20.

I see a high-scoring affair, with YSU by 10

Illinois State has played a schedule that is just about opposite of ours.  League games against Western Illinois, South Dakota, and Southern Illinois.  The "meat" of their schedule just begins this week with YSU, UNI, and NDSU.  They do not play SDSU this season.  They have also played non-scholarship Dayton, an Eastern Illinois team with a very bad defense, and MAC doormat Eastern Michigan.  I'm not sure that their offensive statistics are relevant, but, then again, who are we going to scare with our defense. :-[

There is one thing that I like about this matchup.  Wolford mentioned during the radio show on Monday that the Illinois State offensive line is inexperienced.  Apparently, all new starters from last season.  On their message board, fans are blaming that o-line for Southern Illinois' relentless pressure.  If we cannot exert a pass rush against this team, it will truly be a hopeless situation.

As Wick mentioned, our schedule has been much more demanding than theirs to this point.  I say Guins 35 to 27.

Interesting to hear about their inexperienced offensive-line... YSU MUST establish some sort of pass rush and maybe this is a game to try and learn how to do that confidently (by no means saying this is a "learning" kind of game, just that maybe the D-line could fare a little better in this specific matchup).  Make no mistake about it... the Penguins D-Line has to step up and start contributing in a big way... especially with a few of the pass offenses we have coming our way (playing IL St, SIU and SDSU in consecutive weeks)

Illinois State seems to be one of those teams you just can not be sure about... there FCS schedule thus far has been medium at best... Cant wait until tomorrow to see if they truly are experiencing a "statistical anomaly" because of weak competition or if they are for real.  Either way, I don't expect this to be an easy game for the Penguins as they travel to Normal.

Still think YSU rebounds, the offense goes out for blood and posts a 31-21 victory

I'm hoping our one and only punt pins them deep.  Then we get a safety and the win in a shootout similar to UNI this year, and our past two Ill St contests 44-38.
