Hamilton, N.Y. -- The Youngstown State men's golf team picked up their first tournament championship since March 1999 by winning the nine-team Colgate Invitational which concluded on Sunday. YSU won the event by 10 strokes while Bill Gaffney took medalist honors.
Gaffney placed first, Trevor Jones tied for second while Brian Yeo finished fifth giving the Penguins three finishers in the top five. D.J. Holub was 25th in his collegiate debut while Mark Olbrych placed 29th.
In the team race, YSU had a two-round total of 598 with rounds of 301 and 297 for a total of 598. Lehigh finished second at 608 while Bucknell was third and Fordham placed fourth.
The Penguins' last tournament victory came on March 27, 1999 at the Eastern Kentucky Spring Invitational.
Gaffney picked up medalist honors for the first time in his YSU career with a score of 143 (71-72) to win by an impressive seven strokes. Jones was in the group of three golfers who carded a 150 (75-75) and placed second behind Gaffney. Yeo tied for low-round honors on Sunday with a 70 to finish with a 151 after carding an opening round 81. He entered the day tied for 29th following his first round peformance.
Holub had rounds of 76 and 81 to fire a 157. He was tied for eighth following the opening round. Olbrych had rounds of 79 and 80 in the event for a 159.
The Penguins return to action on Sept. 17-18 at the Bowling Green John Piper Intercollegiate.
