http://www.jsugamecocksports.com/coaches.aspx?rc=260&path=baseballSteve Gillispie begins his tenth season on the Gamecock baseball coaching staff and has played a vital role as the Gamecocks have posted a school-record nine straight seasons with 30-or more wins and has won more Ohio Valley Conference games than any other school since joining the league in 2004.
Gillispie coaches the Gamecock hitters and outfielders and also serves as the recruiting coordinator.
With Gillispie on staff, the Gamecocks have won five OVC Championships and posted an incredible 135-69 OVC record during his 10 years on the staff. Additionally, 33 Gamecocks were named to the OVC All-Tournament team, 21 first-team All-OVC selections, 24 second-team All-OVC selections and 121 players have been named to the OVC Commissioner’s Honor Roll with a 3.25 grade point average or higher.
The 2011 Gamecocks finished with a 36-23 record and advanced to the OVC Tournament Championship for the seventh time (out of eight years) and had 11 players earn All-Conference honors.
Junior reliever Todd Hornsby set the single-season school and OVC records with 15 saves and was named first-team All-OVC, while senior Blake Seguin was also named first-team. Juniors Kyle Bluestein, Sam Eberle, Aaron Elias, Erik Underwood and Ben Waldrip all earned second-team honors, while freshmen Casey Antley, Coty Blanchard, Andrew Bishop and Michael Bishop earned All-Freshman honors.
Additionally, Blanchard was named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American in 2011, which was the sevenh time a JSU player earned freshman All-American honors under Case. Waldrip was also drafted in the first-year Major League Baseball Draft in the 42nd round, but turned down the offer from the Kansas City Royals to return for his senior season at Jax State.
The 2010 Gamecocks won the school’s 15th conference baseball championship after winning all three games in the OVC Tournament. JSU opened with a 7-5 win over Eastern Illinois and defeated Tennessee Tech 9-7 to advance to the OVC Championship game for the sixth time in the last seven years. Jax State then beat the Golden Eagles 10-8 as four players had three hits.
Seniors Bert Smith, Steven Leach, Daniel Adamson, Andrew Edge and junior Jordan Beistline were all named to the All-Tournament squad. Smith garnered MVP honors after batting .500 (7-for-14) with a pair of doubles and a team-high four RBI.
Jax State had five players that signed with major league baseball teams, including the first pick of the second round in junior outfielder Todd Cunningham. He was first player selected from the State of Alabama and was the 52nd overall pick of the 2010 draft by the Atlanta Braves.
Although the 2009 JSU team entered the OVC Tournament as the No. 6 seed, the Gamecocks advanced to the Championship game for the fifth time in the last six years. Five Gamecocks were named to the OVC All-Tournament team including Sam Eberle, Steven Leach, Todd Cunningham, Kyle Bluestein and Austin Lucas.
Juniors Daniel Adamson and Bill Henke each were named to the first-team All-OVC squad, while Sam Eberle and Kyle Bluestein were both named to the All-Freshman Squad. Bluestein also was named the OVC Freshman of the Year, marking the third time in the last six years a Gamecock has earned the honor.
The 2008 Gamecocks raised the bar in the Ohio Valley Conference by posting an incredible 23-4 OVC record, including winning their final 14 straight conference games. It was the most conference wins by any team in the OVC’s 48-year history.
Jax State also placed five players on the OVC first-team All-Conference squad and a total of 10 Gamecocks were honored. Senior Clay Whittemore won his second straight OVC Player of the Year Award, while Todd Cunningham was named the OVC Freshman of the Year. Whittemore also was named to the ABCA All-South Region team and was again a third-team All-American.
In 2007, the Gamecocks posted a 33-27 record and went 19-8 in the OVC to finish second in the regular-season. JSU also placed 10 players on the OVC All-Confernece teams and had the OVC Player of the Year in Clay Whittemore.
Jax State won the 2006 OVC Tournament with a dramatic ninth inning rally to defeat Samford and send Jax State back to the NCAA Regionals. The Gamecocks finished 35-24 overall and 19-8 in the OVC to finish the regular season second.
It marked the third straight championship for the Gamecocks after the team won the 2004 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Regional in Atlanta and then posted a 19-8 league record in 2005 to win the regular-season championship.
In addition, JSU has placed 41 players on the OVC All-Conference team and 21 on the OVC All-Tournament team over the last five years.
Hired on June 26, 2001, to join Jim Case, he began his coaching career in 1988 as the head coach at Fort Hays State. From there, Gillispie moved on to the University of Nebraska as an assistant coach in 1990.
In his two seasons at Nebraska, Gillispie recruited three First Team All-Americans, including the number one pick in the 1995 baseball draft in Darin Erstad, who went to the Anaheim Angels.
In 1992, Gillispie moved on to Mendocino Community College in California and spent two seasons as an assistant. In 1994, he became assistant coach at Lassen College in California, where the team captured the Golden Valley Conference championship.
Gillispie took a position in 1995 as an assistant at the University of Utah. In January of that school year, he was named interim head coach when Coach Rick Sofield accepted a managing job in in the Montreal Expos organization.
Gillispie then moved east when he took a position as an assistant coach at UAB (1996-97). The Blazers set or tied 47 school records while he was an assistant coach.
After that, Gillispie became the Southeastern Area's Supervisor of Scouting for Major League Baseball's Philadelphia Phillies (1997-2001). While in that capacity, Gillispie signed 20 players in professional baseball with the Phillies.
To date, two of Gillispie’s drafts have made it to the Major Leagues. The Texas Rangers Marlon Byrd was a 10th round pick in 1999 and finished fourth in the National League’s Rookie of the Year voting while with Philadelphia in 2003. Third baseman Travis Chapman (17th round pick in 2000) was called to the Major League level in September of 2003 for the Phillies.
Born March 10, 1964, Gillispie graduated with a bachelor's degree in Education from Fort Hays State. He earned his master's degree in Educational Administration at the University of Nebraska. He is married to the former Denise Lamar and the couple has one daughter, Morgan.
