Class of 2013 Men's Basketball recruiting targets
« on: March 16, 2012, 01:32:58 PM »
Lets us this thread for high school and junior college players from the Class of 2013 that would be starting play at YSU in the 2013-2014 season (two seasons from now).

Per Alex Kline's twitter (Recruitscoop.com), YSU and Liberty watched Akron St. Vincent - St. Mary forward Nic Wells in their regional win over Akron East.

A search throw Google brings up a 6-6 power forward, plays hard nosed, a throwback.  Seems to have interest from most of the MAC and other mid-majors.

Rivals reporting YSU interest in 2013 PG John Draper of Columbus Eastmoor.  Other interest form Akron, Coastal Carolina, Tennessee State, Wright State and Xavier

A point guard in next year's class makes sense.  Play one year with Perry, then be ready to take over the team as a sophomore.

Chealey is 6-3, 195

Some stories (some with video)

Evaluation:  Chealey is fortunate to be coached by Carlos Morales in the summer, as it’s obvious to anyone who watches his D12 Warriors squad play that Morales is doing a lot of things right.  Chealey epitomizes what coaches want from their kids in the way he plays (as do many of the other team members) and his positive attitude and bulldog work ethic are a breath of fresh air in today’s AAU scene.  Chealey got after on the defensive end, harassing opposing guards so aggressively that they often had to pick up their dribble without initiating the offense or committed a live ball TO.  Watching the budding prospect attack the rim on the other end, it was apparent that high-major coaches would be on his trail soon.  Hit a couple 3s, used a jab step before getting off a runner in the lane, and drew charges – all while having that look of a kid who’d rather be nowhere else but playing the game he loves.  Got to the line consistently and fared well against a staunch Atlanta Xpress defense that gave his teammates trouble on the perimeter with its length.  Can guard the 1 or the 2.

Very clear the staff wants a point guard in the next class.

Twitter reporting (and retweeted by the athlete) that 6-0, 160 point guard D'Andre Johnson of Detroit Cass Tech is making an official visit to YSU tomorrow.

Lauren Beasley ‏@LBeasley313
Detroit Cass Tech 2013 point guard D'Andre Johnson (@Dre11Johnson) has an official visit at Youngstown State in the morning.

Described in an ESPN recruiting profile as having great speed and quickness and can hit the three or get to the rim.  Needs to get stronger and learn to play under control.

Some video here

http://www.ballinmichigan.com/2012/06/23/video-detroit-cass-tech-class-of-2013-player-dandre-johnson/

Lots more video by googling his name and school

Scout story from March indicates he has 3.6 grade point and wants to major in Architecture.  Indicated offers from Detroit, Duquesne, Fordham, St. Bonaventure, Akron, Toledo, Western Michigan and Central Michigan.

A couple of quotes from the story:

“The coaching staff is a key factor.” Johnson replied. “Whoever I decide to play for, I must feel comfortable with the staff and I need to feel that they can to make me a better student athlete.

“Education is always big factor on my list and that won’t ever change.” Johnson said. “Other factors that come in to play would be the style of play and the system.”

Saw Twitter mention that YSU, Elon and Canisius showing interest in 5-11 PG Sheldon Zablotny of Erie Cathedral Prep, the PIAA District 10 player of the year.

Here is a story that is a bit dated and may be the source of part of the Twitter comment

Per his Twitter account, 5-10 point guard Marcus Keene of San Antionio Harding High School has committed to YSU

TheKeene ‏@cooldaddykeene
I have just committed to play basketball your Youngstown state Universty #college bound #closertomydream #timetowork

https://twitter.com/cooldaddykeene

Started his high school career in Hawaii.  Son of military parents.  Story here on some of his game winning shots

2nd Team

2013    G 5’10″              Marcus Keene            San Antonio Warren

“Cool Daddy” Keene missed 6 weeks of the season otherwise he’s a shoe in for 1st Team Honors.  He came back late in the season from a foot injury for the stretch run and hit 3 buzzer beaters to advance Warren through the playoff maze and on to State.  He’s athletic, smooth with the ball, can shoot it and obviously LOVES pressure situations whereby he elevates his game.  That’s an intangible any coach would love to have!

Saw some refernce to interest from Tulane and UTSA.

With three scholarships available (Eargle, Allen and the open scholarship), one would think this would end the recruiting of the other point guards by YSU.  I can't imagine they would take two in this class.  Imagine they will be looking for some size, either in the post or on the wing.
