Men vs Oakland
« on: December 28, 2023, 03:22:41 PM »
We need a statement win this coming Sunday .  They are tough and have a hall of fame coach. So anything can transpire.   I hope our rest pays off.

Oakland has played the toughest schedule so far in the league so.far.  They beat Xavier on the road earlier this year and lost to Ohio state by 6 and Illinois by single digits I believe.   So they are tough on the road.

Cleveland St beat Oakland 75-67 at CSU last night.  Oakland trailed by 23 points late in the first half.

I watched 2nd half on ESPN +.  Oakland play zone but they foul alot.  Let's see how we do.  I am concerned that we haven't played a game in 10 days which could mean rusty.  Then again fresh as well.  Hoping for a crowd of 3500 but that is stretching it.  Good to see we have been announced as a ESPN 2 live game at home Friday the 12th of January.  9pm tip.  Go Guins!!!!

We need to get to the line on Oakland because they will lose when out free throwed so be on look out for that.   They really suck to a point if the opposing team gets more attempts then they do.    They have the 12th best schedule in the nation so no shying away from playing the major schools.  They have a win at Xavier which is huge.   But 6-8 overall.  Mind boggling. Never know until we play the game. They are a tough nitty-gritty type team. I expect a good game from them.

The YSU-Oakland games are typically always battles to the end no matter the location, players, and who is coaching.  YSU has won the last 3 and prior to that Oakland won the last 4 and before that it was pretty much every other team who won.  In the last 14 games, 7 of them were decided by 4 points or less and only 4 of them by more than 7 points.

Pretty shocking Green Bay beat Wright State on the road today by 11.  WSU led by as many as 10, was up 2 with 7.5 mins to go and GB went on a 14-0 run and that was it.  GB has been a surprise at 7-7 and now 2-1 in the league.  Wright State seems to be off from what I expected and are 6-7 overall.

Poor 2nd half cost ysu basketball the game.   #11 was on fire from 3.

Give Oakland credit they played a great game and their tough non conference schedule has prepared them for the league.   Not closing out on Lampman  who had a career game was not smart and our defense was not good today.

Not sure what the numbers in the paint were but nothing was easy for YSU on the interior .    Needed a big game from Rush and he never got it going.   Thought Thompson was solid and EJ Farmer might of played his best basketball today.

Was at the game. Good crowd.
Poor perimeter defense against Oakland allowing them to make all the uncontested 3 point shots. Giving up 55 points in the 2nd half was inexcusable. Poor all around effort.

Agreed.    We better get the defense straight before the NKU game for sure.

YSU got up 8 in the second half and were never the same after that.  Settled for 3's at times instead of getting the ball inside when Oakland was getting in foul trouble.  Really the difference came down to Oakland making timely 3's (seemed like about 3 with the shot clock nearly expired), while YSU couldn't buy a basket both Oakland went on that run and late in the game.  Oakland gave YSU a lot of opportunities late, but YSU couldn't get it down to a 1 possession game.

If you had said YSU would score 81 and only turn the ball over 6 times you'd feel confident in winning.  Oakland was +10 on the boards, they just seemed more physical and like I said above made the timely shots when YSU couldn't.

Rush didn't seem like he was into the game.  Nice to see Farmer have another good game.  Surprised Lovelace only played 8 mins and scored 5 points.

Coach was really unhappy in the post-game interview with Robb Schmidt.
