Fun fact... Calhoun has more conference wins in 5.5 years than Slocum did in his entire poor 12 year career here. Amazing what some energy and some actual good coaching does for this basketball program!

I was never a fan of Slocum. However, he did have two signature wins. His team won over Georgia @ Georgia and won over Butler which was in the NCAA championship game.

Slocum couldn't recruit at all.  Good to see Calhoun here

Following YSU basketball since 1968, I believe this is the most talented five starters in 55 years. Calhoun’s recruitment of four starters of this caliber from the portal was remarkable. Slocum, with an almost non-existent recruiting budget and playing in the 10th-ranked conference, struggled to produce a winning program. But his teams were well-prepared and well-coached. Slocum had wins against national-runner up Butler, Georgia, Kent State and George Washington. Calhoun is perhaps the greatest basketball recruiter in school history. But the question of whether he has the ability to prepare and coach this talent to their potential, playing in the 20th-ranked conference, will be answered in the next few weeks.

I like Calhoun and his energy but Slocum (not defending) had to compete against the following:

Butler
Valpo
UIC
Loyola Chicago

The league talent was much different 10+ years ago.  Not to mention UW Milwaukee use to be a beast too.  Every team has had their moment except YSU.  Hopefully that is about to change?

Butler in Big East and Loyola had moments the past 5 or 6 years though.  As for Valpo and UIC not so much.  probably shouldn't have left the Horizon

NKU like YSU has multiple guys who can have a break out game and be that scorer for their team.     Need to make Marques Warrick very uncomfortable.  He's a guy when he's on can carry his team.

Seems like other teams point guards have been our krytonite.  Calvin of Wright State,Chong Qui Ft Wayne,Tre Townsend Oakland, and Davis of Detroit but he's kind of a hybird since he's mostly off the ball.

Thinking out loud it seems that YSU played their most efficient game on the road at Oakland and haven't been able to match that since.   They had major contributions from all 5 starters and as of late McBride and Rush have not been as stellar.   Not saying that the team peaked or not but perhaps the horizon leauge teams are getting a real good scouting on YSU and adjustments need to be made.

We are up at half.  We got a shot at this.  YSU is a 2nd half team.
