YSU in Wisconsin

Tight game at half in Green Bay.   37 to 32 us.   Hopefully we come out with fire in 2nd half.

Green Bay is shooting 50% from field.  Some of our bigs have 2 fouls at the half.   Not good.

Must have been some talk he gave the team at halftime.

This team has mind boggling defensive lapses but they sure can score with anybody. Huge game Saturday.

Not a pretty game with all the trips to the foul line.   The press got the team going despite a few bouts of being lethargic.    Nice 3 games of a business trip  so far.

Play of the night was Brandon rush erasing a GB player at the rim on a 3 on 1 fast break.

Big win.  I was worried at the half but we came out smoking hot.

Thought it was kind of an odd game.  YSU played good in spurts.  Came out fast, which hasn't happened much at all this year.  GB fought back and made it a game at the half.  Thought the full court press really turned the game as YSU made a couple steals and forced a 10-second violation.  Defense played really well and had the lead built to 31.  Then YSU got lax on both ends of the court and the bench guys didn't play well.  Shelton got an opportunity, but missed 2 open 3's and seemed to struggle on defense. GB got it down to 14 & YSU covered the spread with the last second tip in.  All of the fouls and free throws took the flow of the game away.

Outside of Dunn hitting 2 3's in the first half, really 0 contribution from the bench.  Covington, Lovelace, Hunter & Shelton all struggled. Lovelace has struggled the last 3 games.

YSU did a nice job on the board, took care of the ball and had 11 steals

Coach didn't seem all that happy in the post game on the radio.  Who would have thought a 16-point road victory and not all that excited.  Standard has definitely changed.  During this 5 game win streak, YSU has won every game by at least 15 points!  I remember some of those years during the Slocum years when YSU would seemingly lose most league games by double figures.

3 way tie for first with NKU & Milwaukee all at 7-2 with CSU and Oakland tied for 4th at 6-3.  NKU drilled a long 3 buzzer beater to knock off CSU.  Oakland needed last second 3 to go to OT against IUPUI & won.

unless we get help in terms of portal transfers for next year we are going to be in deep trouble.   Most of the bench is weak and don't contribute much at least on the road.   So we will probably hit the portal hard.  Are any of the seniors eligible to get an extra year next year?????

Oh we will be a bottom feeder unless Calhoun hits the portal hard. Hardly any contributions from underclassmen. Lovelace can take a big step but other than that who else is there?? Hunter, Rathan Mayes, Dunn, and Lovelace??
We will be where GB is now. Better make it count this season!

Very true.  However, we could have said the same thing at the end of last season.  What did we have returning besides Cohill? Basically nothing. All Calhoun did was acquire FOUR starters in the portal to play with his one remaining asset. He could do it again.  Working the portal is now the main requirement for a successful mid-major coach.

I wondered about the extra year as well.  I would think all of the seniors would be due to COVID except the grad students of Nelson, Green & Covington, but I could be wrong.

And as far as Green Bay, they have been pretty non-competitive since they fired Linc Darner.  They are 15-60 under Will Ryan.

Would like some clarity on this.   Not sure we will be able to know even on the last home game when they honor the seniors.  Then again I'm still worried about this season since we're barley half way through the horizon schedule.

Green Bay had a couple nice young players.  Brock Heffner was giving the bigs fits with his up and under.   Cummings looked good too.

I would like to congratulate YSU on finally having a good basketball team after 22 years in the Horizon League. Tomorrow should be a fun game.
