University Politics
« on: July 07, 2020, 12:24:50 PM »
The issue isnt Akron Athletics or YSU athletics or even OSU athletics in our communities. The real issue is these very teacher unions who are mentally poisoning and  financially draining  ALL communities.  These unions spew hate for athletics, indoctrinate our youth and play diirty with tax payers money.  America wake up! Defund the teachers unions to save your community.

I think what he is referring to is that 18% of social science professors identify as Marxists with a significant number more stating they are activists. Just because you don't agree with it doesn't mean it's hatred. There is a thing called freedom of speech that is a uniquely American thing that is being suppressed by these kinds of statements.

As a YSU Alumni and former student athlete its clear that if I don't agree with you I am wrong.  You are what is wrong with our education system.  Block me if you want!

And one other thing before I leave.  It took a football coach to turn around the university.  Including academics, philanthropy, staff recruitment and a whole lot of other things.  As you people bi*tch cry and complain if you don't get more $$$ and less work.

The faculty acts as if the primary purpose of the university is education rather than entertaining the community with athletic programs.

The Library for Economics and Liberty (econlib) is a very controversial ultra right wing think tank isn't it? Just asking.

College is all about learning and needs to include all views, liberal and conservative. It is not the job of a teacher to try and get their students to think and behave as they think and behave. Rather they should expose the student to all views so that the student can intelligently understand the differences and choose their own path.

We should be afraid when one side try's to suppress the opportunity for a student to see the "other side". Sadly we have recently seen too many cases where colleges block one of these views from being on their campus. This is not healthy for a society.

wow. a few terrible old man takes in this thread.

not sure where teachers and corresponding unions are the reason institutions of learning are the cause of current social ills. to be fair, YSU is one of the biggest proponents and drivers to many of ytowns recent positive developments. as a college graduate, i missed the class on playing dirty with tax money but i was a design major, so there is that.

also, you all do realize freedom of speech refers to the government using its power to suppress people or institutions through policy, force or modern day extortion by threatening to withhold funding?

if the majority of a student body or faculty do not want, say as an example, white nationalists or fascists to speak on campus, they have every right to not have them. you should teach what these "ideals" are not encourage or welcome them into conversation and validation through "seeing both sides".

or is the idea of equality and opportunity for all of us and not just some of us what truly makes you angry?

In two words, BULL sh**!!  Free speech requires the government to protect it, not just allow it.  You are what's wrong with America, a completely uneducated college graduate.

per the legal information institute:

The First Amendment guarantees freedoms concerning religion, expression, assembly, and the right to petition.  It forbids Congress from both promoting one religion over others and also restricting an individual’s religious practices.  It guarantees freedom of expression by prohibiting Congress from restricting the press or the rights of individuals to speak freely.  It also guarantees the right of citizens to assemble peaceably and to petition their government.

Amendment 1: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

no institution or business is obligated to give platform to ideals or actions that does not represent their institutional ideals especially if it breaks a defined terms of service. we all have the right to say what we want and we all have the right to not provide a soundboard for it.

one sticky situation this creates are businesses that deny services based on religious or personal beliefs that equate to discrimination and cry "but freedom of speech!" which conflates two opposing viewpoints and gives credence to the notion that discrimination is an innate right protected by law. this is why equal opportunity laws and other similar legislation exist.

cjm, I read your post and you don't support your position at all.  Government is REQUIRED to protect free speech. This isn't up to you to allow "free speech" only if you agree.  That's the practice on campuses across the country,b but that doesn't make it right.
