YSU BB vs IUPUI
« on: February 01, 2020, 08:15:27 PM »
I watched on ESPN3, YSU looked very good the 1st half, but during the second half, the passing was poor, the shot selection poor, the defense was poor. The team then blew a 17 point lead in the 2nd half. With about 4-5 minutes left in the game leading by 5 points; Quiz caught fire and took over the reins. He drove to the hoop and make two 3 points shots and the lead jumped to 12+points. Nice win, but IUPUI is a poor team.

Against UIC, we were up 9 with the ball & with 3 min to go and we blew it.

Tonight, we were up 8 with 3 min to go and we started doing the same thing (Naz drove into lane and lost the ball. He should have taken it back out giving the ball to Q to run some clock (we only used up 5 sec of the clock).

As you said, when the lead went down to 5, Q took over.

This team when they put their mind to it, can beat anybody. But they can also lose to anyone.. Learning process of how to win and be a good team consistently.

The game pretty much went like how every game against IUPUI goes.  YSU gets up really big then IUPUI goes on a run and makes it a game and YSU pulls away late mostly in high scoring games.  YSU definitely has IUPUI's number beating them 14 out of 15 tries with their only loss in 2000.

It's hard to take much out of the game other than YSU has bounced back this year after every bad loss.  They swept Oakland & Detroit after losing to Cleveland St., pulled out a big win after blowing one to Milwaukee, and then winning Saturday after really blowing the UIC game.

This is clearly the best team since Kendrick Perry's senior year.  And like ytownchief22 said, this team can play with anyone but can also lose to anyone.   Interesting to note YSU is +55 in the first half, but -23 in the 2nd half including OT.  That really goes back to some of those non-conference games they let some bad teams go on runs late and stay in games.

I still really don't have a feel how the rest of the season is going to play out.  Had they just shot a respectable % from the FT line against Milwaukee and they win that and not blown a 9-point lead in the last few mins to UIC it's an entirely different feel.  They would be 8-3, tied for 2nd & just a game out of first place.  Instead they are in a 3-way tie for 3rd and only 1 game up on 7th place.

They now have a week to prepare for Cleveland St. in a critical game.  CSU has really had YSU's # of late winning 5 straight.  Hopefully we take care of business and get to 7-5 then at least split the remaining weekends of Milwaukee-Green Bay on the road, Detroit-Oakland on the road, and NKU & Wright State at home.       10-8 might be good enough to have the opportunity at 2 tournament home games.

Great quote chief and nice info mud.

Couple points on the players.  Naz seems to be going hard to his left the last few games. He scored almost every time on those hard drives.
Credit to Akuchie on battling the other Horizon big men and being at a size disadvantage.   Mike has rebounded well and has been great on weak side putbacks .
The team needs to be more patient when they get a lead.  Some guys are going for the juggler play when they need to run their offense and the shot clock.  Don't need quick 3s but make the opponents work hard the whole shot clock.
Shout out to Garrett Covington with better productivity on offense while still being a great on ball defender and taking the best in the Horizon out of their game.  The guard for IUPUI hit some incredible step back threes against Garret that were Curryesque but was still only4 of 13.
