Green Bay, Wis. -- Freshman Addy Jarvis struck out 13 and broke the Youngstown State single-season strikeout record as the Penguins defeated Green Bay, 4-0, on Friday afternoon.
With the win, the Penguins improve to 23-27 overall and 11-9 in the Horizon League while the Phoenix fall to 11-26 overall and 7-15 in the league.
Jarvis broke the record of 196 set by Casey Crozier in 2014 and became the first player in school history to record at least 200 strikeouts in a season with 202. Jarvis also posted her seventh shutout of the year, which leads the Horizon League and ranks tied for second on the YSU single-season list. The YSU single-season shutout record is eight set by Kim Givens in 1996.
Sophomore Nikki Saibene belted a two-run home run in the top of the fourth to put the Penguins up 2-0. The Penguins added two more in the top of the fifth on a solo home run by Miyah Mitchum and a run-scoring single by Maddi Lusk.
The Penguins and Phoenix will play a doubleheader, Saturday, at 1 p.m. ET.
