Dunn Named Horizon League Player of the Week
« on: January 08, 2019, 09:25:34 AM »
Youngstown State junior forward Mary Dunn has been named the Horizon League Player of the Week for the period ending Jan. 6, the conference office announced on Monday.

Dunn averaged 21.5 points and 10 rebounds and was 18-for-21 from the field in helping the Penguins to a pair of victories last week. Dunn shot 85.7 percent from the field while also going 3-for-4 from 3-point range and 4-for-5 from the free-throw line.

She is the third YSU player to earn the league's weekly honor this season, joining Alison Smolinski on Dec. 10 and Chelsea Olson on Dec. 31. Youngstown State is the first conference school to have three different players be named Player of the Week this season. Dunn was also named the league's player of the week by College Sports Madness.

Dunn set new career highs with 26 points and 13 rebounds in 23 minutes on Thursday in YSU's 81-29 victory over UIC. The Washington, Pa., native was 12-for-14 from the field against the Flames and made her lone 3-point attempt. Dunn was then 6-of-7 from the field, made two 3s and grabbed seven rebounds in a 70-52 victory over IUPUI on Saturday. She was clutch in the first period by scoring nine of YSU's 11 points to keep the Penguins in the game once they fell behind 7-0.

Dunn was also part of a strong defensive effort last week for the Penguins. She helped limit IUPUI's Macee Williams to nine points, which was 10 below the average of the Horizon League's top scorer. YSU held UIC to just 29 points on Thursday, and only eight points of those came in the paint. It was the fewest points YSU had allowed in a game since 1990.

Youngstown State will head to Wisconsin for a pair of contests this week. The Penguins will play at Milwaukee on Thursday at noon Eastern, and they'll take on conference preseason favorite Green Bay on Saturday at 2 p.m. Eastern.

It is good to see that these women are finally getting the publicity that they deserve.  If we can come back from that brutal Wisconsin swing with at least one "W" and then take down an excellent (but as usual, dirty) Wright State team at home next week, we will be on our way to something special.
