Nearly Half of NFL Teams Represented at YSU Football Pro Day
IAA Fan:
Eight former Youngstown State football players went through on-field tests and drills in front of a group of almost 20 professional scouts on Tuesday at the WATTS. The group of scouts represented 13 NFL organizations and two from the Canadian Football League.
The former Penguins who took part in Tuesday's workout were Alvin Bailey, Stefan Derrick, Billy Nicoe Hurst, Damoun Patterson, Jalyn Powell, Kevin Rader, Justin Spencer and Soloman Warfield. Another former Guin, Martin Ruiz participated in the running times and receiving drills.
Scouts from the following teams were in attendance: Cleveland Browns, Miami Dolphins, Denver Broncos, Buffalo Bills, Green Bay Packers, Tennessee Titans, New England Patriots, Detroit Lions, Pittsburgh Steelers, Indianapolis Colts, New York Jets, New York Giants and Washington Redskins as well as the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Toronto Argonauts of the CFL.
Following physically-testing drills the former Penguins went through position-specific drills with the scouts. The defensive backs held their own drill session, followed by wide receivers and Rader. Spencer, the lone offensive linemen participant, was put through a solid workout by a scout from the New York Giants.

Based on measurables here, nobody is going to get drafted. Either too small, or too slow. (in most cases, that's why they were at YSU in the first place!)
I do find in curious how some schools significantly distort players sizes in their programs. So I did a quick comparison from the 2017 YSU roster to the actuals from the scouts.
Actual Program
WR Alvin Bailey 5' 10' 168 5' 11"180
WR Stefan Derrick 5' 10" 194 6' 1" 190
WR Damoun Patterson 6' 192 6' 2" 190
S Jalyn Powell 5' 11" 193 5' 11"190
TE Kevin Rader 6' 4" 250 6' 5" 250
OL Justin Spencer 6' 5" 305 6' 5" 300
DB Soloman Warfield 5' 10" 168 6' 180
DB Billy Nicoe Hurst 5' 11" 190 6' 190
My assessment? While we did stretch a few guys a few inches or add lbs to a couple, by in large, YSU is pretty accurate. More accurate that many schools.

Hard to believe our passing defense was so good with DBs that are unable to break 4.7.

Two relevant factors here. 1. our pass rush has been pivotal in improving our pass "coverage" that last couple years. Take Rivers/Moss and then Chapman/Reed away and see how they hold up. Second, our players are generally at 1-AA because they are too small, or too slow for 1-A, BUT the receivers are at 1AA for the same reason! Fair matchup generally. But go back to the WVU game in 2016 and look at how they WRs torched our DBs with SPEED. Same for those two little guys from PITT last year, Henderson and Ollison. They just out ran our DBs.
