Good point Go Guins..I will say Bo and his staff have done a great job getting the pieces they want in place especially with incoming recruits, and the transfers from last year to this year. I have been following other teams in the conference very closely and all of them have brought in a high amount of FBS transfers this year..The conference will be very strong this year..probably stronger then its ever been..We need to continue to find ways to win the close games
IMO you're 100% right about winning the close ones.  It looks like we could have a ton of those!  I am going to miss the NDSU game and it's killing me!  Families, can't live with them, can't shoot them!

I don't know, but I stay out of legal issues. The video on line must not have been the entire thing then.  Which makes sense, they would want to protect the victims. I guess we just have to trust the judges and coaches.

A teen involved in one of Ohio high school football’s biggest scandals will be a member of Youngstown State’s football team this fall.

Ma’lik Richmond, one of two former Steubenville football players found delinquent in connection with the sexual assault of a 16-year-old girl during a 2012 party, will play defensive end for the Penguins.

The incident, captured and shared on teens’ cellphones, brought national attention to Steubenville amid a firestorm of protests.

YSU sports information director Trevor Parks said Richmond enrolled at YSU as a student in August 2016 before walking onto the team in January.

YSU President Jim Tressel said he was aware Richmond had enrolled at the school as a student, but was not consulted about him joining the football team.

Tressel said he views second chances as something “that’s important for everyone.” If Richmond — or any student — handles their academics while being a model citizen — there is a place for him at YSU.

“He’s been here [for a year] and I haven’t heard of any issues with him,” Tressel said. “What’s important now is the future, my expectations for him are the same as I would have for any student.”

YSU athletic director Ron Strollo and head football coach Bo Pelini have not commented on Richmond being on the team.

When Richmond was released from a juvenile detention facility in 2014, he played his senior season with the Big Red. After graduating, he attended California University of Pennsylvania and Potomac State College of West Virginia University. Potomac State does not have a football team.

A spokesman for California said Richmond enrolled for the spring 2016 semester and left the university “in good standing.” He did not play for the Vulcans’ football team.

Richmond, along with Rig Red teammate Trent Mays, received the juvenile equivalent of a guilty verdict for raping the victim while she was unconscious at a party. Richmond served a year in a juvenile detention facility, while Mays served two. Mays also was charged with the dissemination of child pornography for posting pictures of the girl on social media.

The case lead to the resignation of Steubenville’s superintendent. The school’s IT director faced charges of tampering with evidence, obstructing and perjury and took a plea deal to serve 90 days in jail. A volunteer coach received a six-month suspended sentence along with community service and fines.

Upon Mays’ release in 2015, he attended Hocking College and played football. Hocking’s president, Betty Young, wrote a campus-wide email about the matter, as reported in The Dayton Daily News.

“Second chances do not excuse or defend previous behavior. There are a lot of second-chance stories at every community college,” Young wrote. “Trenton’s story is just one. His path will be challenging, but many of our students face challenges and they overcome them to reach success. It is up to him to determine what to do with this opportunity.”

Mays later transferred to Central State.

As of November 2014, Richmond’s status as a sex offender was downgraded to tier 1 from tier 2 — a lower-risk distinction — according to multiple media reports at the time. He has to register his address with the appropriate sheriff’s office. Only tier III offenders require notification being sent to nearby residents or schools where they live.

Richmond is not listed in online sex offender databases. According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department — the jurisdiction where he was found delinquent — juvenile offenders are never listed online, even after they turn 18.

Sad, but not unexpected.  We should be thankful that a newspaper located 15 miles away is providing quality coverage for the "local" university.  Tribune today has an article on the now healthy Sarah Cash.

Nobody knew about Richmond until it was reported on this website about 10 days ago.  Does anybody doubt that the new reporter for the Vindicator got his initial information here?

I find it rather important that Pelini did not recruit this guy....he enrolled first and then walked on the football team, as any student has a right to do.  With juvenile records in Ohio sealed, it is entirely possible that nobody at the university realized this character was involved in that infamous business.  I knew all about the Steubenville affair, but the name Richmond meant nothing to me until he was identified on this site.

Bo did not recruit him no, but Bo was the one who decided to allow him on the team. We'll see how the reaction is as time moves on.

I don't think this should be an issue.  People have to have a second chance.  hell if not then all crimes should have the death penalty! 

And remember Leo Hawkins?  Or Shawn Patton?   Guys Tress gave a second chance.

I don't want to argue the good/bad of the POTUS, but he has a point with his trash news comments.  Even the long established local paper trashes the main business left in town on the day camp opens.  Completely outrageous.

There are alot of people I know that this is not resonating well with, and I may be in the minority here that feels that this guy probably shouldn't be on the football team. Just my opinion.

I agree everyone deserves a second chance but when the crime revolves around the word "rape" that's just... Idk. A little uneasy for myself.

I also see Xavier Bailey from Brookfield on the roster. He originally committed to OU but has since joined the guins. He's a very explosive athlete with some good speed. Nice local addition.

YOUNGSTOWN — Day one of practice in a college football player’s career is often a tough day on a number of levels, but some instances strike more fear into a player than others.

At Youngstown State University, that fear comes in different forms.

First, there are bigger, stronger, faster players to go up against. Then there’s a new, larger coaching staff to get used to, one that is going is going to be evaluating their every move on film after practice.

But maybe the biggest intimidating factor when joining the Penguins is … Bo Pelini. It’s not necessarily his temper-filled rage that is hard to deal with (although that can be a bit frightening), it’s all the Xs and Os he insists you comprehend that can make players’ heads spin.

“There’s a lot to learn,” said Pelini after YSU broke camp Thursday at Stambaugh Stadium. “There’s a lot of detail if you’re playing the game the right way. We require detail. You have to be pretty disciplined. It’s a little bit of a rude awakening if you’re a guy coming out of high school to be able to play at the level and do the things that we’re asking them to do consistently.”

Not many true freshmen have been able to deal with it all during Pelini’s two years with the Penguins.

The only non-special teams players to make an impact as a true freshmen under Pelini were linebacker Armand Dellovade, who is now a junior and one of the top defenders in the conference, and offensive lineman Gavin Wiggins, who was forced into action two years ago because of injuries but is now a starter.

The schemes and attention to detail needed to play right away aren’t easy to comprehend, not even for the most gifted players.

“It takes some instincts, some football knowledge,” Pelini said. “All guys come in at a different level, and some guys can handle that, and some guys can’t.”

The Penguins might be looking for a few quick-learners this year.

They lost six starters to one of the nation’s best defenses, including all four in the secondary. Also gone are NFL-bound defensive ends Avery Moss and Derek Rivers and two all-league running backs.

There are holes to fill for a team that has expectations of not just returning to the FCS Championship game but winning it, and while Pelini admits it’s hard to do, he’s not going to hold anyone back.

“We’re going to play the best guys,” he said. “The guys that earn it. The guys that give us the best chance to win. I don’t care if that’s a freshman, a senior — I don’t really care who that is.”

One player who knows that all too well is returning starting quarterback Hunter Wells.

The senior was able to start as a true freshman (albeit under a different coach) at the most important position on the field, only to see himself drop to fourth string last year as a junior. He almost left the team before injuries and poor performances gave him one last chance — one he didn’t let slip away.

Wells is now one of the leaders for YSU, and he, too, wants the best players on the field — regardless of class — and is doing his best to develop the incoming freshmen.

“It’s more mental at this level,” Wells said. “You need to be able to translate it from the film room to the field. It’s not as much as what your 40 time is, how fast you are, how big you are; it’s more mental, so if these guys can come in and get a grasp on it, we know coach Bo has no problem playing the best player. I support that.”

That could be good news for running backs like former Farrell High School star Braxton Chapman and Cincinnati La Salle product Christian Turner, or defensive ends Antoine Cook and James Jackson, or even former Brookfield star Xavier Bailey, a wide receiver.

They all have a steep hill to climb, but the opportunities are there — and Pelini sees the potential.

“We have a few guys in this class here that have the ability to do it,” he said of true freshmen playing right away. “Now, are they going to be able to translate it to them being able to earn our trust? I don’t know. It’ll be interesting to see.”

You say everyone deserves a second chance, but you apparently don't think everyone deserves a second chance.
Does he, or does he not deserve a second chance?  It should be noted, this kid was on our team all last season, apparently without issue.
