With the Guins being a deeper team this fall, I believe the return and coverage units will be fine.  If the kickers continue to struggle, Coach P might have to start watching soccer practice.

Why "Yikes"? What are your thoughts 05?

I will be at practice this weekend and going to the scrimmage. I take vacation beginning the 21st, so I will get more then.

One issue that I always had with Wolf, was that it seemed as though players were expected to know much more than they actually did ...which would be why late season losses took place. Our opponents changed up because they knew what we did. Then too much position changing on our end led to disgruntled players as Wolf began to rotate around trying to find a 1-week fix.  Players might have felt that they were not shown what they needed to know and removing them was unfair. Coach H, was just the opposite. The more things did not go our way, the more he entrenched his team (and unfortunately at times ...his staff).

With the addition of coach Carl, the promotion of Stoops and the retention of coach Carm ...I really feel the players are going to get more individual attention. As fans, we need to really step-up for the team this year. I expect to see a much more centralized unit this year. Players looking out for each other and perhaps we may not have players used to taking on leadership roles until next season ...hard to say.

Yikes as in I'm glad the culture has been changed. Like you said, Wolf expected his players just to know how to do certain things and expected that. Pelini's staff seems way more hands on and actually teachers. Also, not as much screaming and yelling in practice. The one quote from Harvin struck me.

“It’s way more fun,” sophomore wide receiver I’tavious Harvin said. “Last year was all business but this year it’s business and you’re having fun at the same time. You’re doing something you actually love again.”

After all, this is still a game. I supported Wolf, but I think Pelini brings a whole different culture, which is good.

If kids don't have fun they will lose interest.  Having fun doesn't mean you don't work hard, but you have to make it interesting and fun.  Look at the Browns and the competition to see who gets to wear the camo jerseys, and these are grown men (well, some are)
Pelini is much different than I expected and I am pleasantly surprised.  I thought he was a yeller too, like Wolford, but apparently not.  (I don’t care if he yells at the refs on game day) but you gotta treat the players right if you want them to go the extra mile for you.   Hope he has enough talent to compete.  We read lots of good stuff, but we haven’t seen any of the new guys tackle, or cover anybody.  (not that we saw anybody cover a receiver last year either!)  Could be good, and really looking forward to it.

This has been something we have taken for granted the past couple of years with Liste, Cejudo, Gibbs and even Brown. Make sure to take some Advil on 4th downs this year because it may cause a multitude of headaches for fans.

The Missouri conference returns 5 starting kickers from a year ago. The other 4 teams must replace their kickers as well. It will be interesting to see how many are true freshman or were currently on the active roster from a year ago or transfers. This is the F.C.S. level with fewer scholarships  and unfortunately teams can't take the approach with specialists like F.B.S. programs can. I hope it all works out because there will be a number of conference games that will come down to field goals. Touch backs are another concern of mine and joey c. Did a pretty good job of limited returns

IAA fan, eagerly awaiting your review of the scrimmage. From the report I saw, the defense dominated the first 8 possessions. Only allowing a single 3rd down conversion. Kinda concerns me. The "sacks" show me that the defense is getting pressure which is good, but is that why the offense struggled to find rhythm at first? Was the offensive line playing bad?

It was a situational scrimmage, so hard to tell anything. I am sorry but I got involved with the new lights and lots of facilities changes.

Webb was really good on his drive with the #1's. Ruiz was "as expected". Scott and McCaster stood out and should both be red-shirted, but they look really good.

Not much kicking, but the balls are going through. The drills for scores were all from the 30 & both FG's were therefore 40-yards and both good. From what I saw today, Wells was far from head-and-shoulder above Davis, but he was able to more easily put the ball into the end-zone. The kicking rotations were all fine out to the 40, but that was not with any real pressure.

I got a chance to take in the scrimmage yesterday.Obviously the defense is much improved from a year ago. The same can also be said for the offense. Keep in mind each unit is making the other one better. I don't think that was case last fall camp. The offense has the ability to put up some big numbers this season and have bigger play ability then some would think. Defensively they can bring it and showed much more creativity with their schemes. The improvement with the D-line will help the defensive backs out considerably. I agree with Fan..Different  Era..Different attitudes !!

Well, that is good news! From YSU's official description, it had made it sound like our offense had done bad. It made it seem as though it was only a situational scrimmage for part of the scrimmage and the rest of the scrimmage was an attempt for a real game. It also made it seem like during the real game part, the defense gave up 1 first down in the first 8 possessions. But if you are both saying good things, then I'm happy.

IAA: On Scott, you said he looked good. Did he practice with 1st or 2nd team offense? Also, if he is good, why would you prefer he is red shirted?

Fever: With your comments about a new era, and different attitudes, does this mean your mind might be changing on Pelini? Granted it is a bit early yet, but your attitude seems to have changed.

Yo Show- It's very easy to see that he is earning the respect of his players and they enjoy playing for him. Coach Pelini to this point has stayed low keyed and is doing and saying all the right things. I just hope it continues and history doesn't repeat itself. He has been very upfront about the challenges that await in conference play and I respect that a great deal..there is a good nucleus for success with our current roster and all the players and coaches our working extremely hard and that's all you can ask for to this point..Go Guins!!
