Players Lost

Scalzo posted this up just minutes ago: Some losses, especially from last years class Wolf brought in....

2011

Recruits: Tahir Blount, CB; David Brown, PK; Christian Bryan, WR; Nick Buonavolonta, CB; Zach Conlan, DL; Nick DeKraker; Kintrell Disher, WR; Jeremey Edwards, S; Josh Fenderson, DL; Brandon Ferguson, OL; Ian Folmar II, DL; Demond Hymes TB; Emmanuel Kromah, DE; Lamar Mady, OL; Jordan Markota, LB; Jimmy May, Jr., DB; Aaron Morgan, LB; Eric Myers, DE; Dante Nania QB; Blake Novotny, DE; Dubem Nwadiogbu, LB; Mark Pratt, OL; Luis Quinones, DE; Davion Rogers, LB; Aronde Stanton, DT; Trevor Strickland, DE; Andre Stubbs, WR; Sir Aaron Taylor, S; Brandon Thomas, WR/CB; Mike Thomas, CB; Andrew Williams, WR; Teven Williams, LB; Justin Yuran, LB/LS; Steve Zaborsky, DE

Left program before graduating: Blount, Buonavolonta, Conlan, Disher (injuries), Ferguson, Folmar, Markota, May, Morgan, Nania, Novotny, Rogers, Taylor, Brandon Thomas, Mike Thomas, Teven Williams, Yuran

Used up eligibility: Brown, Bryan, DeKraker, Edwards, Fenderson, Mady, Pratt, Quinones, Stanton

Analysis: Wolford’s best recruiting class was heavy on impact junior college transfers, but eight of the 34 recruits are still on the roster. Andrew Williams and Nwadiogbu each had breakout years last fall. Williams set career-highs in receptions (54), yards (976) and TDs (six), while Nwadiogbu led the team in tackles (104) in his first full year as a starter. Strickland (left tackle) and Kromah (DT) each started every game last fall, while Stubbs started 10 of 12. Myers and Zaborsky were key reserves on the defensive line, appearing in every game.

2012

Recruits: Matt Bell, DL; Kevon Caffey, LB; Chris Charles, S; Julius Childs, CB; Jamar Clark, WR; Dylan Colucci, OL; Brandon Davis, DL; Brock Eisenhuth, OL; Jordan Feeser, TE; Twin Fernandes, S; Dana Harris, OL; Terry Johnson, LB; Chavien Nolcox, LB; Byron Pringle, WR; David Rivers, DB; Jameel Smith, FS; Anthony Szymczak, DL; Austin Trgovcich, DL; Nick Wargo, QB; Michael Wheary, WR; Mac Wightman, OL; Terrell Williams, DE; Christian Wilson, OL

Left program before graduating: Charles, Clark, Davis, Feeser, Fernandes, Harris, Johnson, Nolcox, Pringle, Szymczak, Trgovcich, Wheary, Wightman

Used up eligibility: Childs

Analysis: Only nine of the 23 recruits remain on the roster, although three of them are starters: Eisenhuth and Colucci on the offensive line and Williams at defensive end. Williams had a breakout year last fall, starting 11 of 12 games while compiling 8.5 sacks to earn second team all-conference. Bottom line: way too many misses, not enough hits.

2013

Recruits: Kenny Bishop, S; Damarius Brinson Jr., CB; Octavius Brown, DT; Derrick Burgess, WR; Joey Cejudo, PK; Vince Coleman, DE; Nate Cox, DE; Ricky Davis, QB; Rickey Hagood II, DT; Jaylin Kelly, LB; Cole Kochman, LB; Connor McFadden, PK; Ryan Mosora, RB; Cole Newsome, OL; Anthony Parente, OL; Derek Rivers, DE; Martin Ruiz, RB; Justin Spencer, OL; Eric Thompson, CB; Bryant “B.J.” Welch, LB; Desmond Williams, DE; Jacob Wood, TE.

Left program before graduating: Brinson, Burgess, Coleman, Cox, Mosora.

Used up eligibility: Brown, Cedjudo, Williams

Analysis: You could argue that YSU’s best offensive and defensive players came out of this class. Rivers was the team’s MVP last year, setting a YSU regular season record with 14 sacks, including 10 in league play. Ruiz had his second straight 1,000-yard season, gaining 1,320 yards on 265 carries with 10 TDs. Spencer started every game at right tackle and made the all-newcomer team. Kelly started every game at inside linebacker and Thompson started nine games as a nickelback.

2014

Recruits: Jaylon Brown, WR; Cole Costy, OL; Shane Dixon, S; Steven Jeffries, OL; Shane Kuhn, TE; Chrispin Lee, CB; Johnson Louigene, LB; Ryan Moore, RB; L.J. Mosley, OL; Brandon Peters, S; Nathan Pittman, LB; Adrian Rankin, DL; Jeff Rotheram, OL; Sidney Sandidge, RB; Nick Sheely, P; Cody Squiric, OL; Jonathan Stewart, LB; Jacob Studdard, CB; D.J. Thomas, CB; Chance Towery, TE; Raekwon Washington, RB; Hunter Wells, QB; Dwayne Williams, OL; Kevin Wilson, S.

No longer with program: Costy, Jeffries, Lee, Mosley, Peters, Rankin, Studdard, Washington, Wilson

Analysis: It’s too early to call this class a disaster, but it’s not a good sign that nine of the 24 players have either left or never arrived. The big name here is Wells, who seized the starting job from Dante Nania midway through last season and started the final six games (and seven overall) to earn MVFC all-newcomer honors. Dixon (10 games), Kuhn (11 games), Moore (nine games), Sandidge (12 games), Thomas (seven games) and Towery (six games) all played in at least half the team’s game, albeit as reserves.

My thoughts: The guys in bold I thought might have a big impact this year if developed correctly... But for the most part, the starters from last year are intact.

I had ranked the 2011 and 2012 classes as the top class each year in the MVFC. The 2013 class I rated 3rd.  Also I said at the time that the 2011 class had the best JUCO class I had ever seen coming into YSU. Pratt was an All League OL and Mady made the Pros. For whatever reasons, far too many left the program before graduating and making big contributions, which they would have done.  College football is always dicey.

May I ask for an explanation of this? Is he listing the entire class, the those that left followed by an analysis?

Correct.
