Spiderlegs,

I guess time will tell as to whether the bar is raised as far as expectations with men's basketball. Fortunately, I live in Vegas, so I also have UNLV. Thing is, they have a highly hyped coach who played for Tark, and was supposed to return UNLV to the Tark days. So far, made NCAA Tournament in each of 1st 2 years, but were 1 and done. Last year, no tournament of any kind, as they turned down invites to CIT and CBI. This year, 5 highly touted frosh, a Senior transfer from University of San Francisco, and as of now 9-5. Four of the losses were to Top 25 teams, but they also lost the first MWC game at Wyoming. Alot of people out here who can;t wait for UNLV to pull the plug on this HC. He brings in loads of talent, but gameday coaching, having team prepared for games and putting together guys that mesh has been a major problem. Kind of like at YSU with football. Good enough to have winning records and have alot of people saying give him more time, but this is his 4th year.

Football at UNLV is awful. I seriously believe they would have had a losing record in the MFVC this past year. They lost to FCS teams in 11 and 12, and this year beat Northern Colorado 13-12.

Alot of the "Olympic Sports" at UNLV are very good. UNLV faces similar challenges to YSU when it comes to money. That is one reason they are taking a chance on the former HC at Bishop Gorman High School as the new football coach. He brings the backing of Fertitta family, who own Station Casino's and UFC. And, the previous coach won 15 games in 5 years, with 7 coming in 2013.

Tying this back into YSU men's basketball, I asked Ron Strollo in an e-mail to consider having YSU play here at UNLV in basketball. They likely pay a decent guarantee for basketball, and usually play at least 2-3 teams from back East. This year it was Morehead State and Albany. Last year, UT-Martin and Sacred Heart. Year before that, UNI and Canisius. And, while out here, I figured try to schedule a game at Southern Utah or Northern Arizona in a home-home series. Those 2 schools are within a few hours of Vegas. Depending on $$$$ and how it works out scheduling wise, could even play UNLV and then ASU, USC, UCLA or a 2nd "money game" while out this way. There are also other schools YSU might be able to work out a home-home with besides S. Utah and NAU. Again, just trying to think a bit outside the box and shake up the drab same old, same old.

Another thing I asked him to consider is having YSU play in one of the early season tournaments that has 2 games in Vegas. There are 3 of them. All have the first 2 games at campus sites, then 2 games in Vegas. Two of the tournaments play in Vegas the week of Thanksgiving, and the other is week of Christmas. UWM played in one of the tournaments this year. Morehead State played both a game at UNLV and also one of the tournaments this season.

There are also alot of good high school basketball players in Vegas. Akron has a kid from Bishop Gorman who starts this year at guard, and he is a true frosh. I mention his because I know he is at Akron, doing very well. Noah Robotham. Has started all 14 games. Averaging 9.5 ppg, 2.9 assists and 2.6 rebounds.. 41% from field, 37% on 3pt shots and 73% at the line. He is playing 30 minutes per game. So, kids from here will go to Ohio to play basketball and go to school. Also had offers from Milwaukee, Idaho, Idaho State, NAU, San Jose State and UT-Martin. Has me asking the question, does YSU have a coach assigned to recruit this part of the country? Akron and UWM were after this kid, so it's a fair question to ask.

Then you have the Juco's in Arizona and Cali, plus the high school players in LA and Phoenix, each of which is 4-5 hours by car. Also think it would be a great trip for the players, fans who travel, YSU alums who live out this way. Also nice to tell a recruit he will be playing in Vegas, let alone getting to spend 1-2 days, or maybe 3-4 if playing here in a tournament. Especially at that time of year.

Penguin Nation:
The Wednesday MBB game between YSU and UWM will be interesting.  UWM has lost six straight, including all three HL games thus far.  None of the HL games were close...they lost to CSU by 27....the closest was a 16 point margin to UWGB.  They are dead last in the HL in record...offense..steals...and assists.

If YSU does lose.....Jerry would have to win 4/11 of the remaining HL games to reach 700 wins.....I don't see that happening.
