Roberts' Record Leads Penguins in Strong Performance at Butler

Indianapolis, Ind. -- Freshman Samantha Roberts lowered her school-record in the 200-yard breaststroke to lead the Youngstown State swimming and diving team to a second-place finish at a five-team meet held at Butler on Sunday afternoon.

Roberts swam a time of 2:25.79 in the 200-yard breaststroke on Sunday. She set the mark previously on Jan. 8 with a time of 2:27.31. She also placed second in the 100 breast with a time of 1:08.02, which is her personal best and ranks second in school history.

Other strong performances for the Penguins included: Hilary Barrett placing second in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a career-best time of 18:26.21; a fourth-place finish by Kirstin Walker in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:59.21; a second-place effort by Caitlin Cook in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:13.94; a second-place finish by Nishani Cicilson in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.81 seconds; and a second-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:39.05.

Ball State posted the best team score finishing with 833 points. YSU was second with 493, Eastern Illinois was third with 375, Valparaiso was fourth at 271 while Butler scored 139 points.

The Penguins return to action on Saturday, Feb. 6 when they travel to Cleveland to face Cleveland State and UIC. The meet is set to start at 1 p.m.
 
 
Walker Paces Penguins in Strong Effort at Saint Francis

Loretto, Pa. -- Sophomore Kirstin Walker, junior Caitlin Cook and freshman Samantha Roberts earned individual wins for the Youngstown State swimming and diving team in their dual meet at Saint Francis (Pa.) on Saturday. The Red Flash defeated the Penguins by a 131-123 score.

Walker won the 200-yard freestyle while Roberts took home the title in the 200-yard IM and Cook placed first in the 100-yard butterfly. Walker posted a time of 2:01.25 in the 200 free while Roberts had a 2:28.46 in the 200 IM. Roberts also finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:09.33. Cook posted a time of 1:04.64 in the fly.

Sophomore Audria Grubbs placed second in the 200-yard free behind Walker with a time of 2:02.17, sophomore Nishani Cicilson was second in the 50 free with a time of 25.79 seconds, freshman Amanda Ritzenthaler was second in the 200 back with a time of 2:22.00. freshman Megan Palmer was second in the 100 fly (1:07.35) and freshman Rachel Tano was second in the 200 IM (2:22.63).

No diving events were held during the competition.

YSU returns to action next Saturday when they have a dual meet against Wright State.
 
 
Roberts Wins 200-Yard Breaststroke; YSU Has Nine Second-Place Finishes

Youngstown -- Youngstown State freshman Samantha Roberts (Spencer, Ind.) won the 200-yard breaststroke and the Penguins had nine second-place individual finishes in a dual meet against Ohio on Friday at the Beeghly Center Natatorium. The Bobcats won the event 146-94.

Roberts' time lowered her school record to 2:27.31, which she had established in the Penguins' last competition in November. She placed second with a time of 2:19.34 in the 200 IM.

In the 200-yard butterfly, junior Caitlin Cook placed second with a time of 2:13.32 just being out touched by Deidre Geroni by six one-hundredths of a second. Sophomore Nishani Cicilson was another Penguin who just missed out on an individual first-place finish. Cicilson posted a time of 24.84 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle losing by .53 to Lauren Funk.

Audria Grubbs placed second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:59.68; sophomore Kirstin Walker was second by .37 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 55.07 seconds and freshman Amanda Ritzenthaler placed second with a time of 2:20.18 in the 200-yard backstroke.

In the diving competitions, freshman Casey Hill finished second in both the one-meter and three-meter. She posted a score of 226.79 in the one meter and a 215.78 in the three meters.

On Senior Day, senior Hilary Barrett finished third in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 11:07.45 while placing fourth in the 500 free with a time of 5:29.32.

The Penguins return to action on Saturday, Jan. 16, when they travel to Saint Francis (Pa.)
