Arnold Wins Twice at UIC to Highlight Weekend Meets

Chicago -- Sophomore Olivia Arnold won the 400 IM and the 500 free for two of Youngstown State's four individual wins at a dual with UIC on Friday evening at the UIC Natatorium.
Arnold posted a personal-best time of 4:42.19 in the 400 IM to win by more than seven seconds, and her winning time of 5:21.90 in the 500 free was more than five seconds faster than the second-place finisher.
Freshman Lara Munro earned her second collegiate victory in the 200 fly with a time of 2:13.99, and Julia Darling edged Arnold in the 200 breast with a first-place time of 2:30.18.
Brittany Senn posted second-place finishes in the 50 free and 200 fly, and Natasha Bray placed second in the 1,000 free. Megan Rupe added a second-place finish in the 100 free with a collegiate-best time of 54.11.
Arnold's time in the 400 IM was 4.99 seconds faster than her previous personal-best, and the time ranks her as the second-fastest 400 IM swimmer in YSU history.
In a double dual with UW-Green Bay and Illinois State on Saturday, Darling earned third-place finishes in both backstrokes while Rupe, Senn, Bray, Munro and Erin-Michelle Gordon each earned a fifth-place overall finish.
Jennifer Johnstone swam collegiate-best times in the 100 breast and 200 IM, and Leah Krout posted a collegiate-best time in the 1,650 free. Amanda Ladd added a collegiate-best time in the 100 back.
The Penguins will return home for two meets this week in their final warm-up before the Horizon League Championship. YSU will play host to Cleveland State on Thursday at 6 p.m. before senior day on Friday against California (Pa.) and Slippery Rock.
 
 
Penguins Split Double Dual Against Radford, Saint Francis

Youngstown -- Cortney Harless swept the diving events and four other Penguins were overall top finishers as Youngstown State topped Radford in a double dual Saturday at the Beeghly Natatorium.
The Penguins won 11 of 13 events against Radford en route to a 155-72 victory but fell 116-107 to Saint Francis. Saint Francis topped Radford 145-77.
Harless posted a season-best score of 198.00 to win the 1-meter and scored 165.74 in the 3-meter. Those victories were the second and third of her career.
Three of YSU's other overall victories came in the freestyle as Jessica Front won the 200 free with a time of 1:59.96. Leigh Bareman was the top finisher in the 50 free with a time of 25.12 while Natasha Bray won the 500 free with a time of 5:20.48.
Front teamed up with Becky Bertuzzi, Brittany Senn and Olivia Arnold to win the 800 free relay with a season-best time of 8:08.60.
YSU will travel to Chicago to take on UIC on Friday at 5 p.m.
 
 
Penguins Fall to Ohio 135-100 in First Meet of 2007

Youngstown -- Freshman Megan Rupe won the 100-yard freestyle with the fastest time of her young collegiate career as Youngstown State opened the 2007 portion of its schedule with a 135-100 setback to Ohio Friday evening.
Rupe's time of 54.52 is the second-fastest swam by a Penguin this season and ranks her as the sixth-fastest 100 free swimmer in school history.
The Penguins, who arrived home from their training trip to Puerto Rico around 2:30 a.m. Friday, have two more meets at the Beeghly Natatorium in the next eight days. YSU will take on Akron Sunday at 1 p.m. and compete against St. Francis (Pa.) and Radford on Jan. 20 at 1 p.m.
Olivia Arnold placed second in the 1,000 free (10:58.81) and third in the 500 free (5:24.05). Erin-Michelle Gordon finished one spot back in third in the 1,000 free (11:02.91), and Becky Bertuzzi posted a third-place finish in the 200 free (2:00.03).
