Leveto Sets 1-Meter Mark in 123-97 Win Over Canisius

Youngstown -- Youngstown State junior Kalyn Leveto shattered her own school record in 1-meter diving with a score of 329.55 to lift the Penguins to a 123-97 win over the Canisius Golden Griffins on Saturday afternoon at the Beeghly Natatorium.
Leveto was YSU's lone double-winner in individual events as she claimed the top spot in both the 1- and 3-meter events. Her old mark was 296.02, which she set against Cleveland State on Jan. 22, 2003.
The Penguins got off to a quick start by winning seven of the first eight events, including claiming the top three spots in the 1,650.
After the quartet of Erin Carter, Danielle Blagg, Becky Bertuzzi and Lena Arens teamed up for a win in the 400-yard medley relay, Jordan Dunn, Erika Gregos and Michelle Von Duhn swept the top three spots in the 1,650.
Also picking up individual victories for YSU were Bertuzzi in the 200 free, Carter in the 200 IM, Arens in the 100 fly and Missy Wiese in the 100 free.
Earning second-place honors were Erin Mazzant in 1- and 3-meter diving, Dunn in the 100 free, Megan Blazek in the 100 back and Lauren Connolly in the 500 free. Connolly, Blagg and Darla Drummond added third-place finishes.
YSU will travel to Indianapolis on Feb. 8 for a bout with Butler, Wright State and Xavier at 2 p.m.
 
 
Arens Named Horizon League Athlete of the Week

Indianapolis -- Senior Lena Arens was named the Horizon League Women's Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week for the period ending Jan. 19, league communications assistant Kyle Smith announced.
Arens won the 50- and 100-yard freestyles and anchored the winning 400-yard freestyle relay in a 169.5-121.5 loss to the Akron Zips on Saturday afternoon at the Beeghly Natatorium.
Arens' victory in the 50 free was the first win of the day for the Penguins against the Zips, who were ranked second in the most recent CollegeSwimming.com Division I Mid-Major Power Rankings.
Arens' winning times of 24.78 seconds in the 50 free and 54.87 in the 100 free were personal-bests.
 
 
Arens, Carter Win Twice Against Akron

Youngstown -- Senior Lena Arens won the 50- and 100-meter freestyles while Erin Carter picked up wins in the 100 butterfly and the 200 individual medley in a 169.5-121.5 loss to the Akron Zips on Saturday afternoon at the Beeghly Natatorium.
The Zips, who were ranked second in the most recent CollegeSwimming.com Division I Mid-Major Power Rankings, got off to an early lead by winning the first six events before Arens' victory in the 50 free.
Arens' winning times of 24.78 seconds in the 50 free and 54.87 in the 100 free were personal bests. Carter won the 100 fly with a time of 1 minute, 1.57 seconds and the 200 IM in 2:16.60.
Kalyn Leveto provided the only other victory of the day for the Penguins with a first-place score of 246.50 in 3-meter diving. She added a second-place finish in 1-meter diving.
The tandem of Becky Bertuzzi, Katy Malys, Missy Wiese and Arens picked up a win in the 400 freestyle relay.
Danielle Blagg finished second in the 200 IM and the 200 breaststroke and third in the 100 breast. Bertuzzi added a second-place finish in the 200 fly while Wiese finished third in the 100 free and fourth in the 50 free. Also picking up third-place finishes were Michelle Von Duhn in the 1,000 free, Erika Gregos in the 200 fly, Lauren Connolly in the 500 free and Kim Hanley in the 200 IM.
The Penguins will travel to Cleveland State to take on the Vikings in their first Horizon League dual of the season at 5 p.m.
 
 
Penguins Prepare For Dual Against Akron

Youngstown -- After a strenuous training trip to Key Largo, Fla., and some time off over the semester break, the Youngstown State swimming & diving team is eager to get back into competition. The Penguins return to the pool on Saturday at 1 p.m. when they play host to Akron at the Beeghly Center Natatorium.
The Zips are ranked second in the most recent CollegeSwimming.com Division I Mid-Major Power Rankings. It is the first time the Zips have been ranked in the top-10 in the brief six-year history of the program.
The meet should prove to filled with exciting competition because both teams have trained extremely hard over break. The Zips will be coming to Beeghly after swimming at Ohio State on Friday evening.
