Penguins Finish 4-1 at Kent Invite

Kent, Ohio -- The Youngstown State softball team finished 4-1 at the Kent State Fall Softball Invitational and improved to 9-1 during the 2004 fall season after defeating Ohio State, 5-1, and dropping a 5-4 decision to Kent State.
Junior Kelly Murphy scattered nine hits in a complete-game victory over the Buckeyes while freshman Becky Hibner went 3-for-4 with two doubles to lead the Penguins' offense.
Junior Tiffany Patteson went 2-for-4 while freshman Sarah Berry ripped a two-run triple to help the cause.
Senior Char Kudlock went 3-for-3 with a triple to lead the Penguins in their loss to Kent State, while Patteson freshman Sarah Conklin and junior Lacy Bronson each collected two hits against the Golden Flashes.
The Penguins face Toledo and Kent State, Saturday, Oct. 2, at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., respectively, at the Ohio Charity Classic in Columbus, Ohio.
 
 
Penguins Win Three on Day One at Kent State Fall Invite

Canfield, Ohio -- The Youngstown State softball team improved its fall record to 8-0 after winning three games on day one at the Kent State Fall Softball Invitational. The Penguins defeated Ashland, 2-1, Gannon, 6-2, and Walsh, 8-4.
In the opener, junior Kelly Murphy tossed a three-hitter and freshman McKenzie Bedra laced a triple to lead the Penguins past Ashland.
Junior Tiffany Patteson and freshmen Shauna Barry and Sarah Berry each collected two hits to lift YSU to a victory over Gannon.
Patteson also led the Penguins past Walsh with a 3-for-4 performance, including a double and a triple and freshman Bethany Hafley went 2-for-4 with two inside-the-park home runs. Bedra also laced her second triple of the day against Walsh.
The Penguins face Ohio State and Kent State on Sunday at noon and 2 p.m., respectively.
 
 
Penguins Win Five at YSU Fall Invitational

Canfield, Ohio -- The Youngstown State softball team went 5-0 at the 2004 YSU Fall Softball Invitational at McCune Park last weekend.
On day one. the Penguins defeated Clarion, 15-0, Robert Morris, 8-7, and Slippery Rock, 8-0. Against Clarion, senior Ashley Lockmiller tossed a five-inning complete game while junior Tiffany Patteson and freshman Shauna Barry each ripped three hits while senior Char Kudlock and freshman Bethany Hafley each added two hits.
Freshman McKenzie Bedra capped a 3-for-4 performance with a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh to lift the Penguins past Robert Morris, 8-7. Hafley and freshman Becky Hibner each collected two hits for the Penguins.
Bedra also cranked a home run in sophomore Tricia Hilbish's 8-0 complete-game shutout over Slippery Rock.
On day two, freshmen Sarah Berry and Jamie Fornal, Bedra, Barry each collected two hits in YSU's 7-3 win over Clarion and junior Kelly Murphy tossed a complete-game shutout over Robert Morris, 1-0, to close out the tournament.
 
 
Penguins Adjust Start Times For YSU Fall Invitational

Youngstown – Coach Christy Cameron announced on Friday that because of the wet weather in the Mahoning Valley throughout the day, the start of the YSU Fall Invitational will be pushed back an hour on Saturday. The Penguins will play Clarion at noon, Robert Morris at 2 p.m. and Slippery Rock at 7:30 p.m. all at McCune Park in Canfield on Saturday.
