Penguins' Bats Come Alive Late to Earn Split Against Canisius

Canfield, Ohio -- Youngstown State banged out 16 hits and rallied from an 8-3 deficit in the fifth inning to defeat Canisius, 10-8, in the second game of the doubleheader on Tuesday evening at McCune Park. The Penguins dropped a hard-fought 10-inning 7-6 decision in the first game.

The Penguins improve to 6-15 while Canisius moves to 12-12 overall.

Seven Youngstown State players collected two hits each, including sophomore Amanda Palmore and freshman Sarah Gabel, who blasted back-to-back home runs in the Guins' five-run fifth inning, and junior Kim Klonowski, who belted a two-run home run in the bottom of the first.

With two outs and two on in the bottom of the fifth and trailing 8-3, sophomore Kristen Philen laced a single to right-center field to Vicky Rumph, who reached on a fielder's choice. Palmore then brought the Guins with one, 8-7, when she belted an 0-1 over the left-field fence for her first career home run.

Gabel knotted the game at 8-8 when she drilled a 1-1 pitch for her first career round-tripper.

In the bottom of the sixth, back-to-back singles by sophomore Jordan Ingalls and Rumph plated Kristina Rendle and pinch-runner Kristina Davidson with the go-ahead runs.

In the opener, the Penguins jumped out to a 5-1 sparked by a two-run home run by Klonowski in the bottom of the fifth inniing.

The Griffs rallied in the top of the sixth to cut the deficit to 5-4 after a three-run home run by Katie Lancelotti off of reliever Hana Somogyi. After two more singles off Somogyi, junior Danielle Chase, who started the game, re-entered and squelched a bases-loaded, zero-out threat by inducing two force-outs at home and a fly out to center field.

Canisius took the lead in the top of the seventh, 6-5, on Paige Freiberger's two-run home run to right field.

Sophomore Haley Thomas tied the game in the bottom of the seventh with her third home run of the season.

In the top of the 10th, Canisius' Lauren Falzone's double to left-center field scored Kerry Ulmer with the go-ahead run.

The Penguins visit Robert Morris, Wednesday, March 31, at 3 p.m.
 
 
Pitt Topples Penguins Softball Twice

Pittsburgh, Pa. -- Senior Cheryl Cale struck out six and allowed just two earned runs in the opener and the Penguins banged out 10 hits in game two but the Youngstown State softball team dropped a pair of games to Pittsburgh, 5-1, and 6-3, on Wednesday afternoon at Trees Field.

Cale held the Panthers scoreless through five innings and held a 1-0 lead thanks to a run-scoring double by sophomore Kristen Philen in the top of the fifth.

However, in the bottom of the sixth, Cale gave up five runs, three of them unearned, on three hits, an error, a hit batter and a walk.

In the night cap, the Penguins fell behind 6-0 after three innings and attempted a comeback with a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth inning but could not overcome the early deficit.

Freshman Vicky Rumph belted a solo home run - her team-high fourth - in the top of the fourth inning. In the top of the fifth, junior Kristina Rendle led off the frame with a single to left field and scored on junior Kim Klonowski's two-run home run to center field to cut the deficit in half, 6-3.

Klonowski, Rendle and Philen each tallied two hits for the Penguins in game two while Klonowski drove in two runs.

The Penguins visit Akron, Thursday, March 25, in a doubleheader at 3 p,m.

The Youngstown State softball doubleheader at Akron scheduled for Tuesday, March 23, at 3 p.m. has been moved to Thursday, March 25, at 3 p.m.

Also the doubleheader at Pitt on Wednesday, March 24 has been pushed up to 2 p.m.
 
 
Softball Drops Pair at Dayton on Saturday

Dayton, Ohio -- The Youngstown State softball team fell to 5-12 overall after dropping a pair of games to Dayton, 10-4, and 5-3, on Saturday afternoon.

In the opener, the Penguins banged out 10 hits, a 3-for-3 performance from sophomore Kristen Philen and a two-run home run from freshman Vicky Rumph.

The Penguins got on the board in the top of the first after sophomore Haley Thomas doubled then scored on Kim Klonowski's ground out.

Dayton answered with three runs in the bottom of the first and another in the bottom of the second to take a 4-1 lead after two innings.

In the top of the fourth, Rumph's blast plated Jordan Ingalls, who singled, brought the Penguins within one, 4-3. Senior Autumn Grove and Philen each singled and Amanda Palmore reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases with no outs.

Dayton's relief pitcher Amanda Daly induced a pop out, a ground out and a line drive to kill the Penguins' threat.

The Flyers added two more in the fourth and four in the sixth to put the game out of reach.

In game two, Thomas doubled and homered while Klonowski and Ingalls each tallied two hits but the Penguins left seven runners on base in the 5-3 loss.

Just like the opener, the Penguins struck in the top of the first when Thomas doubled and scored on a ground out by Klonowski.

After the Flyers took a 2-1 lead in the bottom half of the first, the Penguins knotted the contest at 2-2 in the top of the third on Ingalls' base-loaded single plated Thomas, who walked.

Dayton regained the lead with a run in the bottom half of the frame and added insurance runs in the fourth and sixth innings to take a 5-2 lead.

Thomas' second home run of the season in the top of the seventh ended the scoring.

The Penguins visit Akron, Tuesday, March 23, at 3 p.m.
 
 
Red Flash Hurlers Baffle Penguins Hitters in Sweep

Canfield, Ohio -- Youngstown State had a rough day at the plate collecting just four hits in the opener and three hits in the night cap and dropped a pair of games to Saint Francis (Pa.), 3-1, 4-3, on Thursday afternoon at McCune Park.

The Penguins fall to 5-10 while the Red Flash improve to 5-9.

The Penguins also receive solid pitching performances from freshman Hana Somogyi, who scattered eight hits with four strikeouts in a complete-game effort in the opener, and junior Danielle Chase pitched 4.2 innings of relief with four strikeouts and allowed just one earned run.

In the opener, the Penguins fell behind 3-0 before Haley Thomas cranked her first home run of the sesaon - a solo shot to right-center field - in the bottom of the sixth inning for YSU's lone run.

The Penguins fell behind early in the night cap allowing the Red Flash to score in the top of the first inning.

In the bottom of the second, sophomore Jordan Ingalls singled up the middle to lead off the inning, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a Red Flash fielding error.

The Red Flash regained the lead in the top half of the third on a run-scoring single by Karlie Miller. Chase enter the game with the bases loaded and one out, but squelched the threat with a strikeout and ground out to second.

The Red Flash added runs in the top of the fourth and seventh innings to take a 4-1 lead. The Penguins mounted a comeback in the bottom half of the seventh when sophomore Kristen Philen drilled a two-run home run to center field scoring Autumn Grove, who doubled, to bring the score to 4-3.

The Penguins visit Dayton in a doubleheader, Saturday, March 20, at 1 p.m.
 
 
Softball Bangs Out 15 Hits in 11-5 Win Over Wagner

Orlando, Fla. -- Junior Kim Klonowski, sophomore Kristen Philen and freshman Vicky Rumph posted three hits apiece and the Youngstown State softball team blasted a total of 15 hits en route to an 11-5 rain-shortened win over Wagner on Thursday morning at the Rebel Games. YSU's game against Bryant was rained out.

Klonowski went 3-for-4 with a home run, double and five runs batted in and Philen went 3-for-4 with a double and three runs batted while Rumph drove in two runs with three singles.

Junior Danielle Chase pitched 2.2 innings of relief to pick up her first win of the season.

The Penguins jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead with a five-run first inning sparked by two-run home run by Klonowski, her first of the season, a run-scoring single by Rumph, an RBI-double by Philen and a run-producing single from sophomore Amanda Palmore.

Philen's two-out single up the middle in the bottom of the second gave the Penguins a 6-0 lead and their four-run third inning made the score 10-0 after three innings.

In the third, Klonowski drove in freshman Sarah Gabel, who walked, and Thomas while Rumph's infield single plated junior Kristina Rendle. Philen drove in her third run of the game with a single down the left-field line to score pinch-runner Kristina Davidson with the Guins' 10th run.

After Wagner scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning, Klonowski doubled home Thomas to put the Guins back up seven runs, 11-4.

Wagner added another run in the top of the sixth.

The Penguins face La Salle and Florida A&M, Friday, at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively, to close out the Rebel Games.
 
 
Freshman Hana Somogyi Picks Up First Win, Softball Splits

Orlando, Fla. -- Freshman Hana Somogyi pitched six solid innings allowing just five hits and two earned runs and the Penguins offense pounded out 12 hits en route to a 5-3 win over Saint Louis on Wednesday afternoon at the Rebel Games. The Penguins dropped their second game to South Dakota, 4-3.

After falling behind 2-0 after four-and-a-half innings, the Penguins scored five times in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-3 lead advantage.

Junior Kim Klonowski doubled home Kristina Rendle, Jordan Ingalls, who went 3-for-4, singled home pinch-runner Kristina Davidson, and senior Autumn Grove doubled to left-center field and plated Ingalls and freshman Vicky Rumph. Sophomore Amanda Palmore's single to right field plate Grove with the Penguins fifth run.

Senior Cheryl Cale picked up her first save of the season pitching a scoreless seventh inning.

In the night cap, South Dakota capitalized on three Penguins errors and scored three unearned runs - two in the third and one in the sixth inning.

Thomas and Klonowski each collected two hits and Klonowski drove in two runs.

The Penguins face Wagner and Bryant, Thursday, at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m., respectively.
 
 
Cale's Gem Leads Softball to Day Two Split at Rebel Games

Orlando, Fla. -- Senior Cheryl Cale struck out four, scattered seven hits and allowed just one run in another complete-game effort to lead the Youngstown State softball team to an 8-1 victory over Fairfield on Monday afternoon at the Rebel Games. The Penguins lost to Sacred Heart, 5-4, earlier in the day.

After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, the Penguins (3-7) used a five-run third inning sparked by two-run doubles by both junior Kim Klonowski and sophomore Kristen Philen to take a 5-1 lead.

In the top of the seventh, junior Kristina Rendle led off the frame with a triple to left field and scored on a single by sophomore Jordan Ingalls, who went 3-for-4. The Guins added two unearned runs later in the inning to finish the scoring.

Klonowski went 2-for-3 with two doubles while Philen added a single to go along with her double in the third.

Against Sacred Heart, the Penguins trailed 3-0 in the bottom of the sixth but rallied with a four-run frame to take a 4-3 edge. Rendle single to left-center field, moved to second when Klonowski reached on an error and scored on Vicky Rumph's single to right-center field to bring the Guins within two runs, 3-1. Senior Autumn Grove belted her third home run of the season - a three-run shot - to put the Guins up, 4-3.

Sacred Heart Liz Tsipouras answered with a two-run homer in the top of the seventh to steal the victory from the Guins.

The Guins return to action Wednesday, March 10, when they take on Saint Louis and South Dakota at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., respectively.
 
 
Softball Splits Pair of Game on Day One at Rebel Games

Orlando, Fla. -- The Youngstown State softball team used another offensive outburst to salvage a split on day one of the Rebel Games on Sunday morning. The Penguins dropped a hard-fought contest to Indiana State, 5-3, and slugged 11 hits in a 10-3 victory over Penn in the second game.

The Penguins (2-6) capitalized on four Quaker errors and junior Kim Klonowski went 3-for-5 with two runs batted in. Sophomore Kristen Philen drove in a pair of runs while junior Kristina Rendle scored three times and freshman Caroline Krombach went 2-for-4.

The Penguins scored twice in the top of the first - one an unearned run and one on Jordan Ingalls' sacrifice fly.

After Penn tied the game at 2-2 after two innings, back-to-back run scoring singles by senior Autumn Grove and Philen put the Penguins back up by three, 5-2.

The Guins expanded their lead to 7-2 after scoring runs in the top of the fourth and fifth innings, and after a run by Penn in the sixth, YSU plated three more in the seventh.

Freshman Kayla Vallery picked up her first career victory, tossing 3.1 innings of relief and allowing just one earned run.

In the opener, senior Cheryl Cale threw a complete-game four-hitter but walked six batters and was plagued by a two-out, three-run error in the third inning.

Klonowski went 2-for-4 and drove in all three YSU runs while Krombach added two singles and scored once.

The Penguins take on Sacred Heart and Fairfield, Monday, March 8, at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
 
 
Offensive Explosion Salvages Split at South Carolina State

Orangeburg, S.C. -- The Youngstown State softball team tied three individual single-game records and nearly tied the team single-game mark for most hits to pick up its first victory in a 12-0 win over South Carolina State in game two of a doubleheader at Lady Bulldog Field. The Penguins (1-5) dropped the opener, 6-4.

Sophomore Haley Thomas and freshman Vicky Rumph each tied the single-game mark with four hits apiece while Thomas tied the single-game triples record with two and Rumph belted two home runs to tie that record.

The Penguins also tallied 18 hits - the second-most in school history -against the Lady Bulldogs in game two.



The Penguins scored seven runs in the top of the first inning, which was all senior starter Cheryl Cale needed. Cale picked up her first victory of the season tossing a complete-game two-hit shutout - the fourth of her career - and struck out three.

Thomas led off the game with a triple and scored on a single by Kristina Rendle, who had two hits. After two out, Rumph put the Guins ahead with her first career home run, a two-run blast.

The Penguins scored four more runs on six straight hits - a single by senior Autumn Grove, back-to-back doubles by sophomores Kristen Philen and Amanda Palmore, a triple by freshman Carolina Kromback and two singles by Thomas and Rendle - to take a 7-0 advantage.

Rumph's second home run of the game put the Guins up, 8-0, in the top of the second and three more unearned runs in the gave YSU an 11-0 lead. The Penguins tacked one more on in the top of the fifth on Grove's sacrifice fly.

In the opener, the Penguins received solid pitching from freshman Kayla Vallery and junior Danielle Chase, who combined to allow just one earned run, but the Penguins were victimized by five errors.

Vallery struck out three and allowed the earned run in two innings of work while Chase struck out six in four innings of relief.

Offensively, Rendle went 2-for-3 with a run batted in while Thomas ripped a triple, scored twice and drove in another.

The Penguins take on Indiana State and Penn, Sunday, March 7, at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. respectively, at the Rebel Games.
