Youngstown State Swept by Golden Flashes

Kent, Ohio -- Youngstown State pitchers Karlie Burnell and Kelly Murphy each threw complete game and did not allow any earned runs, but the Penguins softball team (10-12) dropped extra-inning contests to Kent State (12-13), 5-4, in eight innings, and 1-0, in eight innings on Tuesday afternoon at the Kent State Softball Field.
In the opener, Burnell (1-6) scattered seven hits while striking out four and walking none. Murphy (5-5) fired a three-hitter with five strikeouts and allowed one free pass.
The Penguins wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in game one. Junior Tiffany Patteson, who went 3-for-3 with three RBI in game one, led off the game with a solo home run over the center-field fence. Freshman Becky Hibner followed with a double off the center-field wall and later scored on Sarah Berry's sacrifice fly to put the Penguins ahead 2-0.
In the top of the second, Bethany Hafley led off the frame with a single and advanced to second on Lacy Bronson's sacrifice bunt. After Char Kudlock's single moved Hafley to third, Patteson's bloop single plated Hafley to give YSU a 3-0 lead.
Kent State capitalized on two YSU errors and scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the third inning to tie the score at 3-3.
The Penguins regained the lead in the top of the fourth when Patteson drove in Hafley with a two-out single to center field to give YSU a 4-3 advantage.
However, the Golden Flashes tied the game at 4-4 when they plated an unearned run in the bottom half of the fourth and won the game on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth.
In the nightcap, Kent State's Brittney Robinson out-dueled Murphy by throwing a no-hitter with 10 strikeouts. Robinson also picked up the win in game one after tossing 6.2 innings in relief and allowed just two hits and one run.
The Golden Flashes again posted an unearned run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Youngstown State hosts Pittsburgh in its home open, Thursday, March 31, at 2 p.m. at McCune Park.
 
 
Patteson Tabbed Player of the Week

Indianapolis, Ind. -- Junior Tiffany Patteson (Guelph, Ontario) was named the Horizon League Softball Player of the Week for the week of March 28, the league announced on Monday. Patteson is the fourth Youngstown State player to receive the League's weekly award. Last week, senior Ashley Lockmiller was named pitcher of the week and freshman Sarah Berry earned player of the week on March 8. Junior Kelly Murphy earned pitcher-of-the-week honors on Feb. 28.
Patteson led the Penguins to a doubleheader spilt against Horizon League opponent Butler last week.
Patteson, who leads the Penguins with a .415 batting average, batted .667 (4-for-6) for the week with two doubles and three RBI. In game one, Patteson went 2-for-3 with two singles; and in the night cap went 2-for-3 with two doubles and three runs batted in. Patteson also finished the week with a 1.000 slugging percentage and a .750 on-base percentage.
The Penguins visit Kent State, Tuesday, March 29, in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. in Kent, Ohio.
 
 
Patteson Leads Penguins to Split With Butler

Indianapolis, Ind. -- Senior Tiffany Patteson went a combined 4-for-6 with three runs batted in and led the Youngstown State softball team (10-10, 1-1 Horizon League) to a doubleheader split against Horizon League opponent Butler (10-9, 1-1 Horizon League) on Saturday. The Penguins dropped the opener, 4-3, but responded with a 6-2 victory in the nightcap.
Youngstown State exploded for four runs in the top of the second inning of game two to take an early 4-0 advantage. With one out, freshman Sarah Conklin walked, moved to second on Codi Bise's single and scored on a single to right field by Lacy Bronson. Freshman Bethany Hafley plated Bise with a single to right field and advanced to second and Bronson moved to third on the throw home. Patteson then double to left center field to score Bronson and Hafley.
Butler's Jenny Jacobs solo home run in the bottom of the second cut the deficit to 4-1 but YSU responded with a run in the top of the third to regain a four-run lead, 5-1. Berry led off the frame with a single to left field and advanced to second on a ground out. Conklin's infield single advanced Berry to third and Bise's ground out plated Berry.
Senior Char Kudlock's two-out infield single in the top of the sixth inning extended the frame and Patteson's double scored Kudlock to give the Penguins a 6-1 lead.
The Bulldogs, who tallied 11 hits and left 10 runners on base, added another run in the in the bottom of the sixth for their final run.
YSU senior Ashley Lockmiller tossed a complete game to pick up her fourth win of the season.
In the opener, YSU freshman Sara Berry belted a solo home run and Conklin belted a two-run blast in the top of the third inning to give the Penguins a 3-0 advantage after three innings.
Butler chipped away at the Penguins' lead with a run in the bottom of the fifth and another in the bottom of the sixth to cut the deficit to 3-2. In the bottom of the seventh, Jacobs led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. After a dropped foul ball, Ashley Barry's infield single moved Jacobs to third and both runners scored on Maria Marchesano's double to left-center field.
YSU junior Kelly Murphy (5-4) allowed just five hits in the loss while the Penguins stranded 10 runners on base in game one.
The Penguins visit Kent State, Tuesday, March 29, in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. in Kent, Ohio.
 
 
Lockmiller Tabbed Horizon League Pitcher of the Week

Indianapolis, Ind. -- Youngstown State senior Ashley Lockmiller (Bradner, Ohio) was named the Horizon League Pitcher of the Week for the week of March 21, the League announced. Lockmiller is the third YSU player and second Penguins pitcher to receive the Horizon League weekly award. Junior Kelly Murphy was named pitcher of the week on Feb. 28 and freshman Sarah Berry earned player-of-the-week honors on March 8.
Lockmiller went 3-0 last week with a 1.24 earned-run average while throwing two complete games and her first career shutout and helped the Penguins to a 6-4 record at the Rebel Games. She allowed just nine hits and three runs in 17 innings pitched. Lockmiller also fired a one-hitter with five strikeouts in a 3-0 defeat of Vermont on Saturday.
Lockmiller and the Penguins open Horizon League action against Butler, Friday, March 25, at 1 p.m.
 
 
Penguins Knock Off FDU, 8-3, Falls to Army, 3-2

Orlando, Fla. -- The Youngstown State softball team improved to 7-7 after defeating Fairleigh Dickinson, 8-3, and falling to Army, 3-2, in eight innings on day three of the Rebel Games on Wednesday.
Against FDU, freshman Sarah Berry banged out three hits, including a double, and drove in two runs to lead the Penguins past the Knights. Junior Tiffany Patteson continued her hot hitting ways with a 2-for-3 performance, including a double.
Freshman Becky Hibner pounded out two hits, including a double, and drove in two runs while classmate Bethany Hafley went 2-for-3.
Senior Ashley Lockmiller picked out the win for the Penguins, tossing six solid innings.
Against Army, junior Kelly Murphy fired a complete-game three hitter but took the tough loss.
Patteson, Berry and freshman Sarah Conklin each collected two hits for the Penguins.
YSU is off until Friday when it faces George Washington and Colgate at 8:50 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
 
 
Cameron Notches 100th Win at YSU

Orlando, Fla. -- Youngstown State freshman McKenzie Bedra belted a walk-off home run to lift the Penguins past Northern Colorado, 6-5, and sophomore Karlie Burnell fired a five-hitter in a 3-1 win over Tennessee-Martin to collect the 100th win at YSU for Head Coach Christy Cameron on Monday at the Rebel Games. YSU improves to 5-5 on the season.
Against Northern Colorado, the Penguins trailed 5-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning but used a four-run inning capped by Bedra's blast to capture the victory.
Bedra, who went 2-for-3, added a double while junior Tiffany Patteson also went 2-for-3 with a triple.
Junior Kelly Murphy picked up her fourth win of the year tossing a complete game and scattering seven hits.
Freshman Bethany Hafley paced the Penguins against Tennessee-Martin going 1-for-3 with a triple.
The Penguins face Fairleigh Dickinson at 12:30 p.m. and IUPUI at 2:20 p.m. on Tuesday.
 
 
Penguins Split on Day Two at Rebel Games

Orlando, Fla. -- Youngstown State junior Tiffany Patteson went a combined 5-for-7 with a two doubles and a triple and led the Penguins (6-6) to a 4-3 win over Fairleigh Dickinson and a 3-2 eight-inning loss to IUPUI on day two of the Rebel Games on Tuesday.
Against the Knights, the Penguins scored two runs in the first and two more in the third and senior Ashley Lockmiller tossed four innings in relief to pick up the victory.
Patteson went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored against FDU.
In the nightcap, Patteson went 3-for-4 with double and a triple and tied the YSU record for most triples in a career with 13.
Freshman Sarah Berry and Jamie Fornal each laced run scoring singles for the Penguins.
YSU takes on Fairleigh Dickinson at 10:40 a.m. and Army at 2:20 p.m. on Wednesday.
 
 
Berry Named Horizon League Softball Player of the Week

Indianapolis, Ind. -- Youngstown State freshman catcher Sarah Berry was named the Horizon League Player of the Week for the week of March 8, the Horizon League announced on Tuesday. It marks the second straight week a YSU player has garnered the league's weekly honors. Last week, junior Kelly Murphy was named the Horizon League Pitcher of the Week.
Berry led the Penguins to a 1-3 record last week and batted .500 (5-for-10) over four games. Berry also scored three times, belted three doubles and a home run and drove in four runs on the week. She finished with a slugging percentage of 1.100 and an on-base percentage of .455.
In game one against Belmont on Saturday, Berry went 1-for-2 with a double and two RBI. On day two, Berry finished a combined 4-for-6 with two runs scored, a home run, two doubles and two RBI. Berry went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run. Later that day against Kentucky, Berry went 2-for-3 with two doubles and a run scored. On the season Berry is batting .389 with three doubles, a home run and five runs batted in.
