Vaughn's Career-High Not Enough in 68-57 Loss at Cleveland State

Cleveland, Ohio -- A career game from Velissa Vaughn couldn't offset two Youngstown State scoring droughts in a 68-57 setback to Cleveland State on Saturday afternoon at the Wolstein Center.
Vaughn scored 27 points thanks to making 4-for-7 from behind the 3-point arc and 9-of-12 from the free throw line. Senior Chenara Wilson scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Cleveland State in her final regular season home game.
YSU led by as many as 13 in the first half and held a three-point lead late in the second half before Cleveland State went on a 14-0 run.
With the loss YSU fell to 7-18 overall and 5-9 in the Horizon League while Cleveland State improved to 8-19 and 5-9.
Cleveland State lead by as many as seven in the second half before the Penguins took the lead 44-42 on a Vaughn 3-pointer with 9:14 remaining. Vaughn's basket at the 4:31 mark gave the Penguins a 55-52 advantage, but the Vikings held YSU without a field goal the rest of the way and scored 14 straight points.
YSU was held to 26.7 percent in the second half and 31.5 percent overall while CSU shot 36.7 percent. Cleveland State scored 20 points off of 17 YSU turnovers and got 30 bench points.

The Penguins scored the first nine points of the game and led by as many as 13 in the first half but eventually saw their lead diminish into a 30-25 deficit at halftime.
Vaughn's trey at the 17:01 mark capped the 9-0 start, and Anjalia Lyons hit a free throw with 12:22 remaining to give YSU its largest lead at 16-3.
The Penguins hit just shots from the floor the rest of the half and had a scoring drought of nearly six minutes.
Vaughn hit another 3-pointer with 9:58 left to put YSU up 21-9, but Cleveland State went on a 21-2 run over the next 9 1/2 minutes to go up 30-23 with 33 seconds remaining. Nikita LaFleur hit a layup with 13 seconds left to make the margin five at halftime.
The Penguins will stay on the road to finish out the regular season with games at Butler and Wright State. YSU will tipoff with Butler at 7 p.m. next Saturday.
 
 
Godfrey's Career-High 21 Not Enough in 76-70 Loss to UW-Milwaukee

Youngstown -- Sophomore Monique Godfrey scored a career-high 21 points and the Penguins shot 55.6 percent from the field in the second half but the Youngstown State women's basketball team dropped a 76-70 decision to UW-Milwaukee on Saturday afternoon at the Beeghly Center.

The Penguins, who placed four players in double figures, fall to 7-17 overall and 5-8 in the Horizon League while the Panthers improve to 12-13 overall and 8-4 in the league.

Along with Godfrey in double figures were junior Jessica Schloemp with 12 and sophomores Ashley Pendleton and Velissa Vaughn with 10 apiece.

The teams battled through nine second-half lead changes and four ties during the first 10 minutes of the stanza before the Panthers took a 56-51 edge with 7:41 left.

Sophomore Nikita LaFleur hit a jumper as the shot-clock expired to bring the Penguins within three, 62-59, at the 2:53 mark, but UWM's Traci Edwards converted two free throws and a jumper to cushion its lead to seven, 66-59, with 1:55 remaining.

Godfrey, who scored 15 points in the second half, nailed a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 66-63 with 1:21 left then UWM's Meredith Onson answered with a 3-pointer to put the Panthers back up six, 69-63, with 1:06 to go.

Vaughn hit a trey and a Godfrey layup with 14 seconds left sliced the lead to two, 72-70, but Jodi Crumble and Edwards, who scored a game-high 22 points, made four straight charity tosses to seal the Panthers win.
The Penguins have a week off before visiting in-state rival Cleveland State, Saturday, Feb. 24, at 3 p.m. The game will be broadcast on SportsTime Ohio.
 
 
Three Score in Double Figures to Lead Penguins Past Detroit, 58-52

Detroit, Mich. -- Youngstown State placed three players in double figures and turned in a solid defensive effort en route to a 58-52 victory over Detroit on Thursday at Calihan Hall.

Youngstown State improves to 7-15 overall and 5-6 in the Horizon League while Detroit falls to 4-20 overall and 1-10 in the league.

Sophomore Monique Godfrey led the Penguins with 16 points while juniors Jessica Schloemp and Heather Karner added 15 and 11 points, respectively.

Detroit, who trailed by eight at the half, tied the contests at 35-35 at the 14:39 mark but back-to-back 3-pointers by Heather Karner and Godfrey put the Penguins back ahead by six, 41-35, with 14:10 left.

The Titans trimmed the Penguins lead down to one, 42-41 on a jumper by Chanica Hall with 10:26 to go.

Youngstown State scored the next 10 points on a jumper by Schloemp, a 3-pointer by Karner and two jumpers and a free throw by Godfrey to take a 11-point edge, 52-41, with 8:17 left.

The Penguins held the Titans without a field goal for almost five minutes late in the second half.
Schloemp, who scored 11 points in the first half, scored nine of YSU's first 13 points and helped the Penguins to a eight-point lead, 13-5, at the 14:24 mark.

After Detroit trimmed the deficit to six, 13-7, Velissa Vaughn added two charity tosses and Heather Karner drained a 3-pointer to push the Penguins' lead to 10 points, 18-8, with 9:38 remaining.

A 9-4 run brought the Titans within five, 22-17, with 4:03 left, but the a jumper by Lauren Branson, a 3-pointer by Vaughn and three free throws by Anjalia Lyons extended the Penguins advantage to eight points at the half, 30-22.

The Penguins returns home to host league-leader and nationally-ranked UW-Green Bay, Thursday, Feb. 15, at 7:05 p.m. at the Beeghly Center.
 
 
Hot-Shooting Oakland Too Much For Penguins in 81-57 Loss

Rochester, Mich. -- Sophomore Velissa Vaughn tied a career-high with 17 points and junior Heather Karner added 16 points but Oakland shot an impressive 54 percent from the field en route to an 81-57 victory over the Youngstown State women's basketball team on Tuesday evening at the Athletics Center O'rena.

The Penguins fall to 6-15 overall while Oakland won its eighth straight game and improves to 12-10.

Trailing by as many as 13, 32-19, late in the first half, the Penguins used a 13-4 run over three-and-a-half minute span to slice the Oakland edge to just three, 36-33, after a Monique Godfrey 3-pointer at the 1:47 mark.

Oakland, though, scored the last four points of the half to take a seven-point lead, 40-33, into the lockerroom.

Oakland , which out-rebounded the Penguins, 47-18, shot 62.1 percent from the field in the second half and began the stanza with a 15-6 run to jump out to a 16 point lead, 55-39, with 13:03 left.

The Penguins visit Detroit, Thursday, Feb. 8, at 7 p.m. at Calihan Hall.
