Penguins Fall at Butler, 78-55

Indianapolis, Ind. -- Butler (5-5, 1-0 Horizon League) shot 63 percent in the first half and used a 16-4 run midway through the opening stanza to expand a three-point edge to a 15-point insurmountable lead as the Bulldogs defeated the Youngstown State women's basketball team (4-8, 0-1 Horizon League), 78-55, on Thursday evening at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
The Bulldogs led by five, 13-8, at the 14:28 mark but YSU's senior Ashlee Russo, who led the Penguins with 15 points, trimmed the lead to three points, 13-10, with 13:02 left.
Butler, which hit 6-of-9 3-point attempts in the first half, scored 16 of the next 20 points to take a 29-14 lead with 7:04 remaining before halftime.
The Penguins shot just 31.8 percent from the field for the game and shot 7.1 percent from behind the 3-point line.
Youngstown State continues its road trip at Wright State, Saturday, Dec. 31, at 1:05 p.m.
 
 
Gaudiose, Late Free Throws Lead YSU Over Akron, 58-50

Akron, Ohio -- Junior guard Kristy Gaudiose scored a game-high 20 points and the Youngstown State women's basketball squad led the entire length en route to a 58-50 victory over the Akron Zips Monday evening at the James A. Rhodes Arena.
Gaudiose hit four 3-pointers and was 6-for-6 from the line in the final 38 seconds for YSU, which improved to 3-7. Courtney Stewart scored 13 points and Jessica Deville had 10 points for the Zips, who fell to 1-7.
Center Michelle Holmes added 11 points and 10 rebounds for YSU and guard Ashlee Russo chipped in with 14 points.
YSU led by as many as 10 in the second half, but had to rely on making nine of its final 10 free throws down the stretch to stave off an Akron comeback.
Holmes put YSU up 34-24 with 15:21 remaining in the second half, but Akron scored the next six points and held YSU scoreless for over three minutes to get within four with 13:26 left. YSU then held Akron without a point until the 7:43 mark and Russo netted four points to increase the margin to eight.
The Zips chipped away at the lead and got within three with on an Ashley Veal bucket with 1:23 remaining. Krissy Marco had a chance to get the Zips closer, but she missed the front end of a one-and-one and YSU scored the next five points to make the score 54-46 with 25 seconds remaining.
The Penguins finished 21-for-26 from the free throw line while Akron hit just eight of 11 attempts.
YSU built a 28-20 lead through the first half thanks to 11 points from Gaudiose and eight from Russo.
The Penguins scored the first six points of the game as Russo and Gaudiose hit 3s on back-to-back trips down the floor, but Akron scored five straight to get within one with 15:42 remaining. A Monique Godfrey layup and back-to-back Gaudiose 3s gave the Penguins a 14-7 advantage with 12:53 to go, but Akron scored six straight cut the lead back to one.
Akron kept the Penguins within four until Russo, Michelle Holmes and Gaudiose hit three straight jumpers to give the Penguins their largest lead of the half at 26-18 with 22 seconds remaining. Each team hit two free throws to make the score 28-20 at the break.
The Penguins will play host to Coppin State on Wednesday at 5:15 p.m. in the first half of a doubleheader with the YSU men's basketball squad.
 
 
Hot-Shooting Sycamores Down Penguins, 96-57

Youngstown -- The Indiana State Sycamores (7-2) shot 64.7 percent in the first half and made its first nine 3-pointers to surge past the Youngstown State women's basketball team (2-7), 96-57, on Saturday afternoon at the Beeghly Center.
After the teams traded baskets to open the game, the Sycamores ran off 23 straight points, including four 3-pointers, over the next five minutes to take a 25-2 lead with 13:10 remaining.
The Penguins were able to rally and score the next 10 points to slice the deficit to 13 points, 25-12, at the 10:38 mark. Sophomore Jessica Schloemp scored six of her 12 points during the Penguins' run.
Following an Indiana State timeout, the Sycamores buried three consecutive 3-pointers to extend their lead back to 24 points, 36-12, with 8:09 left.
Junior Kristy Gaudiose led the Penguins with a season-high 14 points while freshman Toni Roscoe added a career-high 10 points for the Penguins.
The Penguins visit Akron, Monday, Dec. 19, at 7 p.m. at the James A. Rhodes Arena.
 
 
Penguins Fall to Eastern Michigan, 69-48

Ypsilanti, Mich. -- Eastern Michigan (3-4) used a 15-8 run to open the second half to jump out to a 47-34 lead and never looked back while EMU senior Nikki Knapp scored a game-high 25 points to guide the Eagles to 69-48 victory over Youngstown State (2-6) on Saturday afternoon at the EMU Convocation Center.
Youngstown State, which was led by Jessica Schloemp and Monique Godfrey with seven points each, shot just 32.1 percent from the field for the game and 25.9 percent in the second half.
The Penguins jumped out to a 7-2 lead with 17:06 left but the Eagles rallied with 11-0 run over the next three minutes to take an 13-7 advantage. Knapp paced the Eagles with eight points during that span.
Youngstown State, however, recovered with a 6-0 spurt of their own to tie the game at 13-13 at the 10:48 mark after a Branson lay up, two free throws by Ashley Pendleton and a jumper by Monique Godfrey.
The Penguins went scoreless over the next four minutes and the Eagles capitalized by scoring the next four points to take a 17-13 lead with 7:54 to go.
After two free throws by Branson cut the lead to two, 17-15, at the 6:58 mark, EMU pushed their advantage to nine points, 26-17, after baskets by Colleen Russell and Coleman and two charity shots by Sara VanMetre and a 3-pointer by Annie Malatinsky at the 4:35 mark.
Branson converted a lay up and Gaudiose drilled a 3-pointer to slice the deficit back down to four, 28-24, with 2:08 remaining but the Eagles went into the locker room with a 32-36 halftime lead.
The Penguins host Missouri Valley Conference preseason favorite Indiana State, Saturday, Dec. 17, at 1:05 p.m.
 
 
Cold Shooting Dooms Penguins to 53-40 Loss at Buffalo

Buffalo, N.Y -- Although junior Kristy Gaudiose scored a season-high 13 points, the Youngstown State women's basketball team (2-5) shot just 26.9 percent from the field and 11.8 percent from the 3-point line and dropped a 53-40 decision to Buffalo (3-4) on Wednesday evening at Alumni Arena.
The Penguins jumped out to an early 5-2 lead after a jumper and a free throw from Jessica Schloemp and a lay up from Michelle Holmes, but the Bulls scored the next nine points to take an 11-6 lead and would never trail again.
Buffalo built its lead to 11 points, 18-7, with 9:16 remaining but the Penguins closed out the first half with a 12-6 run - keyed by two 3-pointer by Gaudiose - to trim the Bulls' advantage to five points, 24-19.
The Bulls scored the first five points of the second half to extend its lead back to 10 points, 29-19, and held the Penguins to just one field goal over the first 14 minutes of the second half.
The Penguins visit Eastern Michigan, Saturday, Dec. 10, at 4 p.m.
 
 
Penguins' Comeback Attempt Falls Short Versus Oakland

Youngstown -- Oakland's Jayme Wilson scored a game-high 26 points on 11-of-16 shooting from the floor while the Golden Grizzlies (2-4) shot 50.9 percent from the field and staved off a late Youngstown State (2-4) comeback attempt to hold on for a 61-54 victory on Monday evening at the Beeghly Center.
Youngstown State jumped out to a 13-6 advantage five minutes into the game after a Megan Snorf jumper but the Golden Grizzlies quickly tied the contest by scoring the next seven points capped by a 3-pointer by Wilson, who shot 3-of-4 from beyond the arc, at the 13:02 mark.
The Penguins recaptured the lead, 18-16, with 9:48 to go on a jumper by Lauren Branson, who scored 10 points with three assists.
Oakland, however, used a 15-4 run to close out the stanza and owned a nine-point halftime advantage, 31-22.
The Golden Grizzlies, who shot 53.8 percent in the second half, continued to build upon their advantage and led by as many as 20 points, 50-30, with 8:57 remaining after an April Kidd lay up.
YSU used a 17-2 run over the 4:47 to cut the Oakland advantage to five points, 52-47. Senior Michelle Holmes, who led YSU with 12 points, sparked a Penguin comeback with two 3-point plays to trim the Oakland lead to 14 points, 50-36, with her second coming at the seven minute mark.
Branson nailed a 3-pointer and converted the front-end of a one-and-one to slice the deficit to 10, 52-42, with 5:16 to go. Holmes grabbed an offensive rebound on Branson second free throw attempt and freshman Toni Roscoe knocked down the first of two 3-pointers to bring the Penguins within seven points, 52-47, with 5:11 remaining.
Holmes converted two more free throws with 4:10 left to cut the Oakland lead to five, 52-47, but the Penguins would not get any closer.
Wilson scored five of the next nine Oakland points to seal the victory.

Penguins' Hot Shooting Leads to 80-71 Victory Over Saint Louis

Youngstown -- Four Penguins scored in double figures and the YSU women's basketball team shot 53.7 percent for the game as the Penguins (2-3) overcame a 10-point deficit with 11:47 remaining to pull out an 80-71 victory over Saint Louis at the Beeghly Center on Wednesday night. Leading 63-62 with 6:30 remaining, YSU went on 7-0 run and never looked back. Michelle Holmes had 16 points while Jessica Schloemp and Ashlee Russo each finished with 13 points.
Trailing 57-47 at the 11:47 mark, the Penguins, who shot 55.6 percent in the second half, made their next four field goal attempts to tie the game and five of the their next eight shots to take a 60-57 lead with 7:57 remaining. Freshman Monique Godfrey, who posted 11 points with seven rebounds and six assists, started the Penguins' 13-0 run with a jumper and was followed by 3-pointers by junior Kristy Gaudiose and freshman Toni Roscoe and a lay up by Schloemp.
Holmes capped the YSU spurt with a three-point play to give the Penguins three-point edge.
Saint Louis' Rachel Diener, who scored 19 points with five 3-pointers, tied the contest with a trey but Roscoe answered with a 3-pointer of her own to give the Penguins the lead for good, 63-60, at the 7:13 mark.
In the first half, Saint Louis, who made 11 3-pointers in the contest, shot just 37.1 percent from the floor but made 8-of-14 3-point attempts to spark the Billikens to a 38-36 halftime advantage. Tyler McIlwraith, who led Saint Louis with 20 points, made four treys in the first stanza while Diener added two 3-pointers.
