Gaudiose's Career-High 24 Points Leads YSU Past Panthers, 79-67

Youngstown -- Youngstown State sophomore Kristy Gaudiose took full advantage of her first start of the season with a career-high 24 points on 9-of-16 shooting, including four 3-pointers, to lead the Penguins to their first win over UW-Milwaukee since 1992 with a 79-67 victory on Saturday afternoon at the Beeghly Center.
YSU improves to 9-11 overall and 3-6 in the Horizon League while UW-Milwaukee falls to 9-10 overall and 6-3 in the Horizon League.
After trailing by five, 37-32, at halftime, the Penguins used a 10-5 run over the first five minutes of the second half to tie the contest at 42-42 with 15:28 remaining. Senior Jen Perugini, who posted 18 points off of the bench, and junior Michelle Holmes, who scored 10 points, each tallied four points to get the Penguins back in the game.
UW-Milwaukee's Nichole Drummond, who led the Panthers with 18 points, drained a 3-pointer to give the Panthers a 45-42 advantage with 15:09 left, but the Penguins scored the next 10 points of the contest to obtain a 52-45 cushion and a lead they would not relinquish.
The Panthers were able to twice cut the Penguins' lead to one point at 54-53 at the 9:01 mark and 56-55 with 8:00 remaining.
However, Gaudiose, who scored 12 points in each half, led the Penguins on a 16-2 run over the next six minutes with two 3-pointers and a jumper to give the Penguins an insurmountable 15-point advantage with 1:51 to go.
Youngstown State, which shot 54.7 percent for the game, connected 59.3 percent in the second half and out-rebounded the Panthers 28-25, including an 18-8 rebounding margin after halftime.
The Panthers, which led from the 16:38 mark of the first half until 12:50 remaining in the game, shot an impressive 50 percent from the floor and canned five 3-pointers to lead by as many as nine points in the first stanza and owned a five-point advantage, 37-32, at the intermission.
Youngstown State visits Cleveland State on Wednesday, Feb. 2. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Wolstein Center.
 
 
Second-Half Rally Falls Short in 73-65 Loss to UIC

Youngstown -- Illinois-Chicago used hot starts in both halves and held off a late Youngstown State rally to hold on for a 73-65 victory on Thursday evening at the Beeghly Center.
Jen Perugini finished with 16 points and eight rebounds to lead the Penguins, who fall to 8-11 overall and 2-6 in the Horizon League, while Barb Fabianova chipped in with 11. Dejeanette Flournoy scored a game-high 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Flames, who improved to 9-11 overall and 6-3 in Horizon League contests.
Kelly True gave the Flames a lift with 18 points off the bench while Chrissy Dizon scored 12 points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
The Flames opened the second half making eight of their first 10 shots to go on a 15-9 run and make 50-36 advantage on a Flournoy basket with 13:29 on the clock. YSU then scored six straight points to cut the deficit to 50-42, but UIC got two 3s and a layup on its next three possessions coming out of a timeout to take its largest lead of game at 58-42.
The Flames led 60-44 when the Penguins went on an 8-0 run to slice the UIC lead to 60-52. The Flames got back to a double-digit lead twice - the last time at 65-55 - but the Penguins made a late run and got within four. Jen Perugini hit a jumper with 50 seconds remaining to cut the lead to five and Kristy Gaudiose hit a 3 with 24 seconds remaining to make the score 69-65, but UIC hit four free throws and held the Penguins scoreless the rest of the way for the final tally.
The Flames were 12-of-15 from the line in the second half and 14-of-17 for the game to help offset going three of their last 14 from the floor. The Penguin defense also forced 10 second-half turnovers.
The Penguins shot 46.9 percent in the second half and 39.3 percent overall and grabbed 35 rebounds. UIC posted a 43.3 percentage from the floor and tallied 40 rebounds.
UIC jumped out to a 9-2 lead at the 15:41 mark as the Penguins missed six of their first seven shots, but YSU rebounded to score score 11 of the game's next 15 points to tie the score at 13 with 10:24 remaining. The Flames scored the next four points and held the advantage for the rest of the half.
UIC led by five with 6 1/2 minutes to go but saw the lead trimmed to one when Cathy Hanek and Michelle Holmes nailed two free throws apiece. After the Flames pulled back ahead by five with 3:12 remaining, Fabianova hit a 3 to cut the lead to two, but UIC closed the half on a 6-0 run to take a 35-27 lead into the locker room.
The Penguins will play host to UW-Milwaukee on Saturday at 2 p.m.
 
 
Penguins Fall to Butler, 67-54

Indianapolis, Ind. -- Youngstown State (8-10, 2-5 Horizon League) shot just 31.1 percent from the field and dropped a 67-54 decision to Butler (8-8, 2-3 Horizon League) on Thursday evening at Hinkle Field House.
Leading 29-25 at the half, the Bulldogs rattled off nine straight points and held the Penguins scoreless for the first 4:13 of the second stanza to take a 38-25 advantage with 15:50 to go.
Senior Cathy Hanek, who scored 15 points, buried a 3-pointer and Tara Fleming's layup cut the Bulldogs' lead to eight points, 38-30, at the 14:52 mark.
Butler used a 10-3 run over the next four minutes to extend its advantage to 15 points, 48-33.
The Penguins rallied with a 17-9 run to trim the deficit to seven points, 57-50 with 4:42 left, but the Bulldogs scored the next four points to push their advantage back to 11 points, 61-50. My'Kea Cohill's jumper at the 2:14 mark sliced the lead back to nine, 61-52, but YSU would not come any closer.
Senior Jen Perugini added nine points and 20 rebounds while freshman Lauren Branson, who had three assists, tied the YSU freshman assist record at 106.
YSU returns home to host Illinois-Chicago, Thursday, Jan. 27, at 7 p.m. in the Beeghly Center.
 
 
Penguins Tie School Mark with 15 3-Pointers in 97-73 Win

Fort Wayne, Ind. -- Youngstown State tied a school record with 15 3-pointers and seniors Cathy Hanek, Barb Fabianova and Tara Fleming each posted career scoring highs as the Penguins (8-9) downed IPFW (2-14), 97-73, in a non-league contest on Tuesday evening at the Hilliard Gates Sports Center.
Hanek posted a career-high 28 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the field, including 6-of-9 from behind the 3-point arc and Fabianova, who tied a school record with seven treys, tied a career high with 23 points. Fleming added 14 points, including 10 in the second half, on 6-of-8 shooting while freshman Lauren Branson dished out a career-high 13 assists.
The Penguins jumped out to an 11-point lead, 27-16, midway through the first half keyed by Hanek's hot shooting. The 5-foot-8 guard connected on five of her first six shots and also converted her first three charity tosses.
IPFW clawed its way back into the contest with an 11-0 run to tie the game at 27-27 with 7:25 remaining in the half and took its first lead of the game, 32-30 after an Ashley Johnson 3-pointer at the 6:25 mark.
Trailing, 36-35, with 3:36 before the intermission, Fleming sank two free throws to give YSU a 37-36 advantage and a lead it would not relinquish.
Leading 45-42 at the half, the Penguins quickly pushed their lead to nine points, 51-42, after back-to-back 3-pointers by Hanek and Fabianova within the first 39 seconds of the second stanza.
The Mastodons again rallied and cut the Penguins lead to just three points, 59-56, at the 13:43 mark but would not get any closer.
The Penguins used a 21-9 run over the next five minutes to take an insurmountable 15-point lead, 80-65, with 8:33 left. Freshman My'Kea Cohill began the Penguins' surge with a 3-point play and two 3-pointers by Hanek and Fabianova keyed the YSU run.
YSU returns to Horizon League play against Butler on Thursday, Jan. 20. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.
 
 
Upset Bid Comes Up Short Against UW-Green Bay, 53-51

Youngstown -- UW-Green Bay's Tiffany Mor hit two free throws with 2.8 seconds remaining to break a 51-51 tie as the Phoenix scored the final six points of the contest to sneak away with a 53-51 win on Saturday afternoon at the Beeghly Center.
Youngstown State led by as many as eight in the second half and held a 51-47 advantage with 3:26 remaining, but the Penguins were held scoreless the rest of the way as they missed their final five shots and committed two turnovers.
UW-Green Bay sliced a six-point YSU advantage to 48-47 with 3:55 remaining, but Cathy Hanek hit a long 3-pointer on YSU's next possession to give the Penguins a four-point cushion.
Mary Kulenkamp then began the UWGB rally with a steal near the Phoenix basket and hit a layup with 2:57 remaining. The Phoenix then committed three straight turnovers, but Mor tied the contest on a layup off a pass from Abby Scharlow with 40 seconds left. Following a Penguin miss, Mor got open again underneath and was fouled by Barb Fabianova to set up the go-ahead free throws.
Hanek got off a desperation shot from half court but hit the top of the square.
UW-Green Bay remained undefeated in Horizon League play and improved to 14-2 overall while the Penguins fell to 2-4 in the conference and 7-9 overall.
Fabianova led the Penguins with 17 points and was 5-for-6 from behind the 3-point arc while Jen Perugini and Hanek finished with seven points apiece.
Mor scored a game-high 18 points after being held to just four in the opening half. Nicole Soulis added 13 and was one of three Phoenix to grab six rebounds. UWGB edged the Penguins 26-12 in the paint and 26-9 in points off turnovers.
YSU scored the opening four points of the second half to take a 27-19 lead after a Perugini layup to take its largest lead of the game at the 18:34 mark, but UWGB answered with a 13-0 run over the next five minutes to take a 32-27 advantage with 13:39 remaining.
YSU then answered with a 13-2 run to reclaim a six-point lead after Perugini hit a 3-pointer with 9:03 left.
Youngstown State took a 23-19 lead into the locker room thanks to a 44.4 percent to 24.1 percent advantage from the floor in the first half. UW-Green Bay benefited from nine offensive rebounds and 12 YSU turnovers that turned into 12 points.
A 9-2 YSU run gave the Penguins a 9-4 advantage on a layup by Jessica Schloemp, but UWGB scored five straight points as part of a 9-3 run and took a 13-12 lead with 7:10 remaining in the half. Fabianova hit a 3-pointer on YSU's next possession to make the score 15-13, but the Phoenix scored four straight points to take a 17-15 lead.
From that point, UWGB was held without a field goal for the rest of the half, and back back-to-back 3-pointers from Fabianova and Kristy Gaudiose put YSU up 21-17 with 4:28 remaining. Two free throws from Soulis and a jumper by Lauren Branson made the score 23-19 at the break.
YSU will travel to IPFW to take on the Mastodons on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
 
 
Penguins Stave Off Late Loyola Comeback, 62-55

Youngstown -- Youngstown State hit its final six free throws in the final 27 seconds to stave off a frantic 15-point Loyola comeback in a 62-55 victory on Wednesday evening at the Beeghly Center.
The Penguins led 46-30 with just under 13 1/2 minutes, but Loyola went on a 25-10 over the next 12 1/2 minutes to get within 56-55 with 55 seconds remaining.
Then with four seconds remaining on the shot clock and 31 seconds on the game clock, Jen Perugini was fouled on the in-bounds pass and hit both of her free throws to give the Penguins a 58-55 lead. Perugini and Hanek then hit two from the charity stripe apiece following Rambler misses to seal the win.
Perugini led all scorers with 18 points, despite playing only eight minutes in the second half because of foul trouble. Tara Fleming added 13 for the Penguins and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds to record her first career double-double. With the win, the Penguins snapped a four-game losing skid and improved to 7-8 overall and 2-3 in Horizon League contests.
Meskhenet Lands scored 15 points and Jenna Real added 10 for the Ramblers, who fell to 4-12 overall and 1-4 in league play.
YSU opened the second half on a 16-8 run to grab a 46-30 advantage after two Michelle Holmes free throws with 13:28 remaining. Loyola then scored the next eight points as part of a 16-4 run that cut the Penguin advantage to 50-46 at the 4:46 mark.
A Lauren Branson free throw and a Perugini jumper extended the lead to 53-46, but Loyola went on a 7-2 run to get within one on a Lands 3.
Youngstown State took a 30-22 lead at the intermission after taking an 16-3 lead seven minutes into the game and shooting 54.2 percent from the floor.
Barb Fabianova hit a 3 right off the opening jump to spark a 7-0 Penguin run over the first 1:07 of the game. A Holmes jumper at the 13:03 mark capped a 9-0 run gave the Penguins their largest lead of the half at 16-3.
Loyola then hit five of its next seven shots to cut the margin to 23-15 with 8:39 remaining, but two Perugini jumpers and a 3-pointer from Cathy Hanek put YSU back ahead 30-17 at the 2:45 mark. The Ramblers scored the final five points to cut the Penguins' advantage to 30-22.
Perugini was 5-of-6 from the floor for 10 points in the first half while also recording five blocks. Fleming added five points, six rebounds and four blocks in the opening period.

Youngstown State Falls to Wright State, 65-38

Fairborn, Ohio -- Wright State (9-6, 3-1 Horizon League) used a 16-4 run midway through the second half to extend a three-point lead into an insurmountable 15-point advantage as the Raiders vaulted their way past Youngstown State (6-8, 1-3 Horizon League), 65-38, on Saturday afternoon at the Ervin J. Nutter Center.
The Penguins trailed 32-29 with 11:26 remaining after Michelle Holmes converted one of two free throws but the Raiders' run quickly doused any hopes of a Penguins comeback. Youngstown State scored just nine points the rest of the contests and shot just 25.9 percent in the second half.
Youngstown State was plagued with 33 turnovers which the Raiders converted into 34 points, including 18 fast-break points.
Senior Jen Perugini led YSU with eight points and 10 rebounds while Aliyah Sabree added seven points off the bench.
The Penguins return home to host Loyola, Wednesday, Jan. 12. Tipoff is set for 5:15 p.m. in the Beeghly Center.
 
 
Perugini Scores 1,000th Point

Chicago, Ill. – Youngstown State senior Jen Perugini became the 16th player in school history to score 1,000 career points and recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds, but the Penguins (6-7, 1-2 Horizon League) dropped a 56-48 decision to Illinois-Chicago (4-10, 1-2 Horizon League).
The Flames used a 16-4 run to open the second half and held the Penguins scoreless for seven minutes to pull ahead 37-25 with 12:44 remaining.
After two 3-pointers from Barb Fabianova and a trey from Cathy Hanek, the Penguins trimmed the deficit to 41-34 with 8:12 left. Freshman Lauren Branson sliced the Flames' lead down to five, 41-36, at the 7:23 mark.
UIC's Krystal Hugelier, who canned six 3-pointers, extended the Flames cushion to 44-36 but Branson buried a triple to bring YSU within six, 44-39.
The Penguins within four points, 48-44, after a Hanek 3-pointer at the 3:27 mark and 50-46 after two Perugini free throws with 2:49 remaining.
Hugelier made her sixth 3-pointer of the evening at the 1:50 mark and a Amber Washington's layup with 1:05 to go to seal the game.
In the first half, the Penguins jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead with 16:31 left after a jumper from Barb Fabianova and two baskets by Cathy Hanek.
UIC, who did not make a field goal until the 12:31 mark of the half, used a 13-0 run over the next six minutes to take a 13-6 advantage with 9:40 remaining.
Perugini took over and scored 10 straight points for YSU and Hanek's 3-pointer at the 4:23 mark capped a 13-0 run and gave the Penguins a 19-13 lead.
UIC, however, drained two 3-pointers in the last 2:32 to key an 8-2 run and tie the game at 21-21 at intermission.
The Penguins close their four-game road trip against Wright State on Saturday. Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m.
 
 
Muskateers Fight Off Penguins, 67-57

Cincinnati, Ohio – Youngstown State senior Jen Perugini scored a team-best 17 points and freshman Lauren Branson posted a career-high 12 points but the Penguins (6-6) dropped a 67-57 decision to Xavier (6-4) on New Year's Eve at the Cintas Center.
Trailing by 10 points, 33-23, at the half, the Penguins used a 19-10 run to start the second half and sliced the Xavier advantage to one point, 43-42, with 11:36 to go. Perugini paced the Penguins during that run with a 3-pointer and three jumpers.
The Muskateers, who made 10 3-pointers, pushed their advantage back to five points, but Cathy Hanek, who finished with 10 points, drilled a 3-pointer at the 9:28 mark to slice the lead to back to two points, 47-45.
Xavier, however, buried four 3-pointers and outscored YSU, 20-12, down the stretch to finish off the Penguins.
In the first half, Youngstown State jumped out to a 7-4 lead with 14:40 remaining after a 3-pointer by Cathy Hanek and jumpers by Jen Perugini and Tara Fleming. Xavier, though, scored the next six points on 3-pointers by Suntana Granderson and Miranda Green to take a 10-7 advantage with 14:10 left.
After Lauren Branson's layup cut the deficit to 10-9 at the 13:40 mark, Xavier used an 11-0 to take a commanding 12-point advantage, 21-9, with 10:46 remaining.
The Penguins outscored the Muskateers, 14-12, to close out the half with a 10-point deficit, 33-23, at the intermission. Barb Fabianova drained two 3-pointers and a jumper while Perugini posted six points during that span on two baskets and two charity tosses.
Xavier used 11 offensive rebounds which translated into 16 second-chance points for the Muskateers compared to YSU's two.
