Penguin Comeback Falls Short In 62-56 Loss

Milwaukee, Wis. – The Youngstown State women’s basketball team used a feverish rally to outscore UW-Milwaukee, 32-14, over the last 12 minutes of the game but the Penguin comeback fell short in a 62-56 loss to the Panthers on Saturday afternoon at the Klotsche Center.
YSU falls to 2-18 overall and 0-9 in the Horizon League, while UW-Milwaukee improves to 9-10 overall and 6-3 in the Horizon League.
The Panthers held an 11-point halftime lead, 32-21, and extended its advantage to 17 points, 38-21 at the 17:42 mark before senior Jessica Forsythe scored YSU's first points of the half with 17:32 to go.
Over the next five minutes, UWM used a 10-1 run to cushion its lead to 24 points, 48-24, with 12:14 remaining.
Coming out of a timeout, YSU's Barb Fabianova drilled a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 21 points, 48-27, at the 11:56 mark.
Junior Cathy Hanek, who led the Penguins with 13 points, brought the Penguins within 19 points, 54-35, with a 3-pointer with 6:32 left. After two free throws from Jessica Olmstead, Hanek nailed another trey and Forsythe hit a jumper to cut the UWM advantage to 12 points, 54-42, at the 4:56 mark.
UWM's Anne Witte extended the Panthers' lead back to 15, 59-44, with a 3-pointer with 2:11 remaining but the Penguins chisled the lead down to nine, 61-52, sparked by a jumper and 3-pointer from Hanek with 43 seconds left.
Freshman Kristy Gaudiose scored YSU's final four points but the Panthers would on for the victory.
In the first half, UWM's Maria Viall, who scored 14 points, paced the Panthers with 10 first-half points while Nichole Drummond added nine points before halftime. The Panthers also forced 11 YSU turnovers in the first half.
The Penguins return home to host Cleveland State, Thursday, Feb. 5. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at Beeghly Center.
 
 
Gaudiose Scores Career High In 56-51 Loss To UIC

Chicago, Ill. -- Despite a career-high 15 points from freshman Kristy Gaudiose, the Youngstown State women's basketball (2-17, 0-8 Horizon League) team dropped a 56-51 decision to Illinois-Chicago (8-11, 3-6 Horizon League) on Thursday evening at the UIC Pavilion.
With the Penguins trailing by three at halftime, 25-22, Gaudiose scored YSU's first eight points of the second half, including a 3-pointer, and kept the YSU deficit at three points, 32-29, with 14:32 remaining.
The Penguins and Flames traded 3-pointers before UIC took a seven-point lead, 41-34, with 9:56 remaining.
YSU's Cathy Hanek drilled a 3-pointer and senior Jessica Forsythe converted a layup to trim the deficit to two points, 41-39, with 6:48 to go.
UIC's LaShonda Grant hit one of her five 3-pointers and a Chastity Quinn layup gave the Flames another seven-point lead, 46-39.
The Flames extended their lead to nine points with under a minute remaining but Jen Perugini and Barb Fabianova, who scored 11 points off the bench, each hit 3-pointers to slice the deficit down to four, 53-49, with 16 seconds.
After Krystal Hugelier made just one of two free throws, Ashlee Russo drove the lane for a layup to make the score 54-51 with six seconds left.
Chrissy Dizon, however, sealed the victory for UIC with two free throws with one second left on the clock.
In the first half, the Flames and Penguins exchanged the lead six times with two ties. UIC scored first on a Dizon 3-pointer but the Penguins scored the next eight points sparked by two 3-pointers from Gaudiose to take an 8-3 advantage with 16:19 remaining.
The Flames then used a six-point run to retake the lead, 9-8, at the 14:53 mark and held a three-point advantage, 13-10, with 12:54 left.
Two jumpers by Jessica Forsythe and Jen Perugini and a 3-pointer by Fabianova gave YSU a 17-13 cushion at the 10:41 mark.
The Flames quickly tied the game, 17-17, after jumpers by Andrea Milner and Krystal Hugelier, YSU's Nicole Neila added a jumper to regain the advantage, 19-17, with 5:15.
YSU was held scoreless for more than five minutes while UIC scored eight straight points to take a 25-19 advantage. Perugini hit a 3-pointer with eight seconds before intermission to cut the deficit to three, 25-22.
YSU visits UW-Milwaukee, Saturday, at 3 p.m. ET.
 
 
Five in Double Figures Lead YSU Past IPFW, 72-62

Youngstown -- The Youngstown State women's basketball team snapped a 16-game losing streak with a 72-62 victory over the IPFW Mastodons behind five Penguins in double figures and a strong second-half defensive effort on Saturday afternoon at the Beeghly Center.
Jen Perugini had a game-high 14 points off the bench for the Penguins while Cathy Hanek finished with 13 and Ashlee Russo finished with a career-high 12 points. Jessica Forsythe and Tara Fleming added 10 points apiece to complete the quintet.
A stifling second-half Penguin defense forced IPFW to miss 18 of their first 20 shots of the half and did not allow a Mastodons field goal for a nine-minute period.
YSU (2-16) outscored IPFW (6-12) 15-5 over the first 11 minutes of the second half to take a 51-36 lead after a Hanek 3-pointer, but IPFW went on a 10-2 run to cut the lead to seven at the 5:04 mark. The Penguins tallied the next five points to get the lead back to 12 after two Hanek free throws, but IPFW would not surrender as they made nine of their last 14 shots to get back within 64-57 with under a minute to go.
However, YSU made eight straight free throws in the last 50 seconds to seal the win.
YSU shot 46 percent from the field and 81 percent from the line and held IPFW to a 39 percent from the field. YSU held the rebounding advantage 39-33 as Perugini had a game-high nine boards and Fleming had seven. The Penguin bench outscored IPFW's 31-19.
Amy Geralds and Verea Bibbs led the Mastodons with 12 points apiece.
The Penguins took a 36-31 lead into the locker room after shooting an impressive 48.5 percent from the floor and eight first-half points from Perugini.
IPFW jumped out to an early 5-2 lead after a 3-pointer from Geralds, but back-to-back buckets from Aaliyah Sabree and Forsythe gave the Penguins their first lead of the contest at the 17:38 mark. IPFW answered with four straight points to take a 9-6 lead after two baskets from Bibbs.
The teams traded buckets six times before YSU took a 22-21 after a Hanek jumper with 10:21 remaining. However, the Mastodons scored five straight points to take its largest lead of the contest at 26-22. From that point, the Penguins went on an 8-0 run over the next five minutes to take a 31-26 lead after a Russo 3-pointer. A Barb Fabianova 3-pointer with 1:26 remaining gave YSU its largest lead of the half at 36-28, but the Mastadons scored the final three points of the half to cut the deficit to five.
YSU will travel play at UIC on Thursday at 8 p.m. EST.
 
 
Late Run Lifts Butler Past Penguins, 55-45

Youngstown -- The Youngstown State women's basketball team (1-16, 0-7 Horizon League) was held scoreless over the last 5:39 of the second half and allowed Butler (6-11, 2-4 Horizon League) to close the game with a 10-run to drop a 55-45 decision to the Bulldogs on Wednesday evening at Beeghly Center.
The Penguins tied the contest at 45-45 after two free throws from Tara Fleming with 5:39 remaining, who led YSU with 12 points and set a school record with seven blocked shots. Youngstown State missed its last 10 field goal attempts and committed four turnovers to close out the game.
The Bulldogs opened the second half on a 10-4 to take a five-point lead at 32-27, but YSU scored the next four points to get back within one after an Olmstead jumper and two free throws from Nicole Neila. Butler, however, answered right back with four straight points to reclaim their five-point advantage with 12:28 remaining in regulation.
Both teams started off cold in the first half as Butler missed its first six shots while the Penguins converted on one of their first six shots.
Fleming gave the Penguins a 2-0 lead on their first possession on a layup, but Butler scored the next five points and held YSU scoreless for nearly six minutes to take a three-point advantage at the 16:04 mark.
Following a free throw from Butler's Dionne Goodwin, YSU's offense caught fire as the Penguins made their next four shots and went on an 8-0 run that was highlighted by six straight points from Gaudiose to take a 10-6 lead with 12:34 left in the opening half.
YSU took its largest lead of the half at the 8:17 mark when Nicole Neila hit a jumper to put the Penguins up 15-9. Butler, however, went on a 10-4 run to tie the score at 19 on a 3-pointer by Ellen Hamilton. YSU outscored the Bulldogs 4-3 the rest of the half to take a 23-22 lead into the locker room.
The Penguins will host IPFW on Saturday at 2 p.m.
 
 
Penguins Fall To Phoenix, 65-47

Green Bay, Wis. -- The Youngstown women’s basketball team (1-15, 0-6 Horizon League) dropped a 65-47 decision to UW-Green Bay (9-5, 4-1 Horizon League) on Saturday evening at the Phoenix Sports Center.
Youngstown State junior Cathy Hanek was the only Penguin to reach double figures with a season-high 16 points, including three 3-pointers.
Trailing by just six at halftime, the Penguins hung tough with the five-time defending Horizon League champions through the first five minutes of the second half.
UWGB went up nine, 24-15, at the 18:40 mark but junior Jessica Olmstead hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to six, 24-18, with 18:16 to go.
After two free throws and a 3-pointer by UWGB’s Tricia Grassell put the Phoenix ahead, 29-18, YSU’s Nicole Neila cut the deficit to nine points, 20-20, at the 15:42 mark. YSU would not get any closer.
After scoring the first basketball of the contest at the 18:23 mark of the first half, Youngstown State allowed the Phoenix to use a 19-3 run over the next 11 minutes to take a 14-point advantage, 19-5, with 8:11 remaining before halftime.
The Penguins got back into the game, scoring the next eight points to cut the deficit to six points, 19-13, after Hanek drilled YSU’s first 3-pointer at the 2:07 mark.
The Penguins, which shot just 28.6 percent for the game, and Phoenix traded baskets to enter the locker room with the score 21-15.
YSU returns home to host Butler, Wednesday, Jan. 21. Tipoff is 5:15 p.m. at Beeghly Center.
 
 
Second-Half Shooting Woes Doom Penguins In 55-45 Setback

Chicago, Ill. – The Youngstown State women's basketball team (1-14, 0-5 Horizon League) squandered a six-point second-half lead and shot just 25.9 percent after halftime and dropped a 55-45 decision to Loyola (7-9, 2-3 Horizon League) on Thursday evening at the James J. Gentile Center.
Leading 24-23 at halftime, the Penguins scored the first five points of the second half to take a 29-23 advantage with 18:46 remaining. Junior Jessica Olmstead, who led the Penguins with 14 points buried a 3-pointer at the 19:15 mark and junior Tara Fleming added a jumper to give YSU its six-point cushion.
Loyola scored the next five points to trim the lead to one, 29-28, at the 17:17 mark. YSU's Cathy Hanek made it a four-point YSU advantage, 32-28, after nailing a 3-pointer with 16:01 left in regulation.
The Ramblers, though, held YSU scoreless for almost four minutes and used a 9-0 run to take a 37-32 lead with 12:35 left.
YSU freshman Kristy Gaudiose converted two free throws to trim the deficit to three points, 37-34, with 11:53 to go, but the Ramblers scored the next seven points to take a 10-point advantage, 44-34, with 7:08 remaining.
After a jumper by Gaudiose and a 3-pointer by Hanek, YSU trailed by just five points with 6:10 left, but would not come any closer.
In the first half, Youngstown State led the Ramblers, 11-10 at the 13:25 mark after an Olmstead jumper. Loyola, however held the Penguins to just two points over the next seven minutes and outscored YSU, 11-2, to take a 21-13 lead.
Youngstown State trimmed the deficit to 23-17 after two free throws from Olmstead with 3:12 remaining.
The Penguins tightened up their defensive pressure and forced the Ramblers to miss their last 12 shots of the stanza.
During the span, YSU, which used an 11-2 run to close the half, converted three of four of its field goal attempts and scored the last seven points of the half to take 24-23 lead into the locker room.
YSU visits UW-Green Bay, Saturday, Jan. 17. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. at the Phoenix Sports Center.
 
 
Late YSU Surge Falls Short, WSU Prevails, 61-58

Youngstown -- The Youngstown State women's basketball team worked a 10-point Wright State lead down to two points with one second left but could not finish the comeback as the Raiders held on for a 61-58 victory on Saturday afternoon at the Beeghly Center.
Four Penguins scored in double figures with Cathy Hanek and Jessica Olmstead leading the way with 11 points. Jen Perugini finished with a game-high 16 rebounds while Tara Fleming added 11 boards. Kristy Gaudiose and Ashlee Russo also finished with 10 points apiece.
Catherine Portyrata led the Raiders with 13 points while Brittney Whiteside chipped in with nine.
YSU trailed 31-30 at the break and allowed the Raiders to take a three-point advantage before a Hanek 3-pointer tied the contest at 35 with 13:43 remaining. After the teams traded baskets for three possessions, Gaudiose hit from behind the arc to give YSU its first lead since the 18:58 mark of the first half.
Wright State, however, answered with a 9-0 run to take an eight-point advantage after a Portyrata layup. YSU got within five three times including 53-48 with 3:32 remaining, but WSU scored the next five points to take its largest lead of the contest with 2:19 remaining.
The Penguins went on a 7-1 run late to get back within two after four free throws from Russo and a Gaudiose 3-pointer, but Whiteside hit a free throw and Hanek's 3-point attempt from half court fell short.
The Raiders held a 22-13 advantage at the 6:34 mark of the first half, but two jumpers from Olmstead jumpers and another from Fleming got the Penguins back within three at 22-19. WSU regained its nine-point lead by scoring six unanswered points of its own before YSU went on a 9-0 run to tie the score at 28.
Wright State outshot the Penguins 43 percent to 32 percent, but YSU held the rebounding advantage at 45-41.
YSU will travel to Loyola-Chicago to take on the Ramblers on Thursday, Jan. 15, at 8 p.m. EST.
 
 
Penguins' Effort Comes Up Short, 64-57

Youngstown -- The UIC Flames scored the final six points to stave off a late Youngstown State comeback en route to a 64-57 victory Thursday evening at the Beeghly Center.
The Flames (6-7, 1-3 Horizon League) held a 58-52 advantage at the 2:41 mark in the second half, but a free throw from Jessica Forsythe, two charity tosses from Cathy Hanek and an Ashlee Russo layup got the Penguins (1-12, 0-3 Horizon League) within one with 1:24 remaining. UIC, however, did not allow another point and made six of ten free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Hanek led all scorers with 16 points while Tara Fleming and Russo had career-bests with 13 and 11 points, respectively. Forsythe finished with eight points and nine rebounds and Jessica Olmstead had four steals.
LaShonda Grant led the Flames with 14 points off the bench while Chrissy Dizon chipped in with 11.
YSU scored the opening bucket of the game on a fast-break layup by Forsythe off a behind-the-back pass from Hanek, but UIC scored five unanswered points to take a three-point advantage after a free throw from Dizon at the 17:35 mark. An Olmstead 3-pointer knotted the score at five, then back-to-back buckets from Fleming gave YSU a 9-5 lead with 14:30 remaining in the opening half.
UIC fought back to reclaim a 14-12 lead after Grant hit from behind the arc and took its largest lead of the half at 27-22 with 6:50 remaining after a 3-pointer from Kelly True.
YSU, however, answered with a 7-0 run to take a 30-27 lead following two free throws from Hanek. UIC scored the next five points on a 3-pointer from Dizon and a Grant layup, but Russo tied the score for the eighth time of the half on a layup with 58 seconds left. UIC scored the final three points of the half to take a 35-32 lead at the break.
UIC led by as many as five early in the second half, but Russo hit a 3-pointer at the 14:12 mark of the second half to give the Penguins a 43-42 lead. Following nearly a four minute scoring drought for both teams, Fleming and Hanek jumpers pushed the Penguin lead to 47-44.
Grant tied the score at 49 on her third trey of the evening and UIC capitalized on three straight Penguin turnovers to take a 55-50 lead with 3:16 remaining. Hanek got YSU within three on two free throws, but a free throw and Dejeanette Flournoy and a Quinn layup gave UIC its 58-52 lead.
UIC outshot the Penguins 49 percent to 40 percent and held the rebounding advantage 36-30. UIC had 32 bench points while YSU had just 13, 11 of which came from Russo.
The Penguins will host Wright State at 4:35 on Saturday following the men's game against Cleveland State.
 
 
Detroit Downs YSU, 62-42

Youngstown -- Detroit went on an 18-0 run midway through the first half and held the Youngstown State offense to 20.6 percent shooting in a 62-42 victory on Saturday afternoon at the Beeghly Center.
Holding an 11-7 lead at the 13:36 mark in the first half, Detroit (4-6, 1-0 Horizon League) held YSU (1-11, 0-2) scoreless for over 11 minutes to take a 25-11 lead with 4:22 remaining. During the span, YSU missed 15 straight shots from the floor and committed seven turnovers.
Kristy Gaudiose led the Penguins with nine points while Jessica Forsythe chipped in with ten rebounds. Lindsey Pasquinzo paced the Titans with 11 points while Sara Crum added nine points and 11 rebounds.
The Titans jumped out to an early 4-0 lead on two free throws from Nicole Anaejionu and a layup by Katie Solner, but buckets by Cathy Hanek and Forsythe knotted the game with 15:25 remaining in the opening stanza. Detroit reclaimed the lead when Crum connected on a layup and sank a free throw, but YSU scored seven unanswered points to take its largest lead of the game at 11-7.
An Olmstead 3-pointer ended the scoring drought that followed to get the Penguins back within 11, but Detroit scored the final two buckets of the half to take a 29-14 lead at halftime.
Detroit opened the second half on a 10-2 run to open up a 23-point lead at the 17:25 mark and led by as many as 27 with 5:16 remaining. YSU could not cut the deficit to less than 13.
The Titans shot 47.1 percent overall and held the rebounding advantage 47-37.
The Penguins will continue their three-game homestand on Thursday, Jan. 8, when they host UIC at 7 p.m.
